Thanks @Angie and @Janet. I think I have everything covered and just got a waterproof line pants that fit wonderfully. I'll try to take some photos.

I've been to Iceland twice, but a little earlier in the year so it didn't get as cold as it likely will for you. Nonetheless, I didn't find it as cold as I thought it might be. Greenland was a whole other story. ;-)

That said, I would check and see if your pants are rated as windproof as well as water. I think the wind can definitely make it feel colder, and I do remember encountering quite a bit of wind there. Take something that will cover your ears. And I recommend glove liners plus water/windproof gloves or mittens. My hands are always the first thing to get cold, and ANY bit of dampness will make it far worse.

Have a great time! I LOVE Iceland!

You’ve got a good list, but I second the rain pants. We have been going to Iceland every winter for the past 7 years (and heading there again in December).

Iceland is actually a lot more temperate than people think. Rain is much more likely in November and December, especially in the south. Though you can run into some snow if you’re lucky. Even in December, daytime temps can run in the mid-40s in Reykjavik and environs. Up north in Isafjördur or Akureyri, temps are likely to be colder. But not always. It’s the wind that makes you feel it’s so cold. Especially at night. I swear by wool Henleys, a lightweight wool scarf, good gloves—silk glove liners are great!—and lightweight wool or silk long johns. Have fun. There will be scads of tourists, especially in Reykjavik.

Ooh, I always like these posts about winter dressing, seeing as how I know nothing about it. I am surprised to learn
Winter is fairly mild in Iceland on average. Have fun, citygirl!!!

I was in Moscow couple years ago in November and did a lot of layering to stay warm ( my mom is slow walker now and matching her pace made me feel colder than usual ). I did vests under the coats - one synthetic and the other down puffer - really helped making all layers fit a bit tighter/warmer.
Smart Wool is great for leggings, socks.
I support the idea of testing before making final decision and visiting REI ( they have nice return policy ).
Good luck on your trip!

The Cat - thanks for letting me know. I have 4 days to find something. And I think you are right about the rain, it will more rainy than snowy.

JAileen - good to know the difference between snow pants and rain pants.

We went to northern Manitoba this summer and I took “waterproof” pants that turned out not to be waterproof. Huge wardrobe fail. Apparently, per SA at REI, rain pants and snow pants are different. I had snow pants that aren’t as waterproof as rain pants. Depending on how much time you plan to spend outside, you might splurge for genuine waterproofness. I was lucky, I could go in the lodge and warm up/dry out by the fire, but you might be very uncomfortable depending on your situation.

I ended up buying Arcteryx goretex rain pants after we got home. I was lucky that they were on sale, but mainly I chose them because the fit was very good.

Haven't been to Iceland yet, but have visited several places along Norway's coastline that have a similar climate. I think you are ALMOST well sorted.

I support the wise advice from Suz. In addition, if I were you, I would bring rainpants and wear them with two warm layers underneath. While it is a good idea to be prepared for snow and to bring crampons for your boots, it is realistic to expect more rain than snow, and temperatures from 1 to 7 °C in primo November.

TexasGal - I have a feeling it will be quite cold especially in November. I'm ready. I think.

Glory - Hmmm wool tights...I hadn't though of that. Will be on the look out.

Suz - Oh you look fab with all those great outfits and your hair is awesome. #8 and #9 is what I'll be wearing. :) As for November travel, unfortunately we won't be going North due to the weather conditions, so we'll be doing the Golden Circle and trying to head to Vik if driving conditions permit.

I was in Iceland in early May a few years ago. I did a bit of hiking in the far north and a lot of walking elsewhere. I found it warmer than I had anticipated, considering I was north of the arctic circle. Keep in mind, I come from Canada so am used to cold! Also, in May it is light for much longer, which does affect things. In November it will be dark very early. So will feel colder.

I suspect one waterproof pant will be plenty. I had one water resistant shell type pant that I wore over others and that was fine. I didn't always need them. Only when walking through fields, and in actual ice/rain/snow.

My underlayers were Smart Wool and Heattech. Both worked well. The Smart Wool tops were useful because they actually looked nice enough to wear as regular tops beneath a scarf/ blazer. (My trip included city time and presentations, etc. so I needed to bring more than gear type clothing.)

Hat, scarf, gloves will go a long way toward keeping you warm. I had several scarves -- some lightweight wool, some cashmere.

You can also (sometimes) layer coats. That is what I did. I had a lightweight puffer which I sometimes wore alone and sometimes layered under a waxed cotton raincoat...I also wore the raincoat on its own (in the city) or over a blazer/ sweater.

I brought jeans, wool pants, and Sloans, plus long underwear and the waterproof pant. Hiking boots, booties, sneakers. Some indoor and outdoor ready outfits below.

It is a fascinating, wonderful country! Food is expensive but often delicious (fish!) Coffee and beer are excellent.

I would try and test the water worthiness of those pants and then decide if you need a second pair.
I have a pair of very thin merino wool tights (footless) or maybe they are leggings. I bought mine from Costco but Rei and stores like that carry them. They are very thin and dry quickly. I use them for all my winter sports and even now for biking. They fit easily under everything.

I went skiing a year ago in Colorado and did not have snow pants- so I wore long underwear (Patagonia), sweatpants (Athleta), and rain pants (Marmot)- and was surprisingly warm (temps in single digits + actively snowing). On top I wore Uniqlo heattech shirt, Icebreaker sweater, Patagonia nano-puff, and REI rainjacket- again very warm and more important dry.
We were in Iceland in the summer and it was cold even then in places (glacier, one very rainy +windy hike). I wouldn't worry too much about people seeing you in things twice- just make sure you have a variety of weather conditions covered. layering is key, especially if you will be going indoors and outdoors.

Hello all.

Yes, we are splurging and heading out to a much-deserved trip to Iceland (it's their Winter) for an 11 day getaway from DC. It will be cold, quiet, wet, icy, hopefully snowy, and I'm all ready for it...somewhat.

My big thing is how do you prepare for a Winter trip? I know we have to layer up and I've done plenty of research, so warmth and dryness are key factors on this trip. My top half is prepared. Its my bottom half that I'm worried about. I currently have the following items:

1 pair of black waterproof pants to wear over leggings

1 pair of Uniqlo heattech black leggings to wear under waterproof pants

1 pair of fleece lined black leggings to wear under waterproof pants

1 pair of warm running leggings

1 pair of jeans

6 pairs of wool socks - will wash if I have to

2 pairs of boots: 1 pair blue waterproof hiking and 1 pair beige snow boots

2 pairs of crampons for our boots

Should I take another pair of waterproof pants? Part of me says no since no one would know if I wore something twice. Part of me says yes since I'm not sure how waterproof these pants are.

Help with suggestions??? Am I forgetting anything else?

Suggestions appreciated.
