@JAileen you can buy transparent packing cubes! Or I at least have ones by Typo that come with a mesh front.

I don’t use a carryon, I check a wheelie duffle. But I started using packing cubes last year. They do keep my bag tidier, but I can’t see through them, and need to look through several to figure out what is in each one. I’m not sure what to do. I might attach different colors of yarn to them.

Hi. It took me quite a while to adjust to this exact type of suitcase. I still do not love it. it's bulky to close and the strapped side can spill out if opened wrong. Also, my suitcase (can't remember brand) doesn't have enough outside handles, so it makes it tricky to get up in the overhead bin.

Like CocoLion, i pack clothing in cubes and put them on the strap section. My exercise gear bag, make up bag and toiletries bag, along with shoes if they fit, go on the other side that zips closed.

I do appreciate how light my bag is, and it expands for more packing room if I am checking my bag.

I also use packing cubes in both hard and soft cases (any kind will do) and, further, use the bundling method for larger pieces like tops, bottoms, and toppers. It's much more intuitive for me than rolling, can be adapted to clothing and trips of different sizes, and prevents wrinkles!

https://www.realsimple.com/bea.....ing-step-4

For silks that you really don't want to get wrinkled, laying them down (even folded in once or twice) in a dry cleaner's bag in your final "layer" really does the trick. (But I tend to leave fussy fabrics at home.)

In hard cases, shoes are my bottom layer, usually packed in a dust bag. In soft cases, they are my top layer, usually packed soles-up or (if heeled) their sides, not in dust bags.

You will be THRILLED that the new case is much more ergonomic and easier to move. I recently upgraded too, and I love having the spinners - very versatile.

Others have already made the suggestions I would - and konmari folding worked well for me. I liked this video for getting started with all the zippered compartments!

My "tip" is to keep the top - near where the handle is - empty-ish - I always find I need to unzip the top and stuff a scarf or purchase into the bag without the hassle of opening it in the middle of the airport!

Everyone in my family has a similar case; we love them. My DD is actually the packing master of the family and she loves packing cubes - so you can separate the different items and they don't spill all over the case in transit. She got something like these:

https://www.amazon.ca/OrgaWise.....038;sr=8-8

Certainly better than my "just roll them they'll be fine" packing methodology!

My suitcase recently bit the dust too, but it was a hard case. This reminded me that I need to go shopping for another! Anyway, I've found that, whilst the screen partition can be useful for keeping stuff in the mesh pockets, it can be annoying in that things don't always stay well slotted behind it. The things in the top half of the suitcase (that acts as the 'lid') usually spill out from the sides when I unzip the suitcase lying down (by virtue of lifting the lid).

So instead of putting things in the top half that are easy to slide about (due to the lack of straps to hold them down - why don't they put straps in both the top & bottom half?!), I instead use my packing cubes in the TOP half to hold things together. It sounds counterintuitive but, since it's the lid (& therefore needs to be able to flip up easily), I put lighter & sleeker items in the packing cubes in top half (I usually Kon Mari my clothes if they're tightly packed, otherwise rolling them helps to stop unravelling). I then wedge anything that needs to stay flat (like a jacket) between the packing cubes & the top lid. Anything that needs a little more wiggle room but doesn't like being completely strapped down (like a hat) goes on the opposite side of the packing cubes, next to the divider instead.

I then put all my bulky items in the bottom half, so that they can be strapped in, & will stuff smaller items into them (stuffing socks into knee-high boots, for example, helps them keep their shape but also makes a logical 'footwear' category in my packing space). I use the crevices between the items for flexible stuff that can fill different shapes easily (like belts) & anything delicate goes into the mesh pockets in the divider (underwear & jewellery, I'm looking at you - packed in little bags first though, so that they don't snag on the mesh).

If I'm just bringing the hardcase as a carry-on, I will also then keep anything that isn't essential to keep on me at all times (since that goes into a tiny crossbody) but that I may still need before I get to my destination, in a separate 'somewhat essential' purse. I'll load everything else up into the suitcase whilst it's still laying flat, THEN stand the suitcase up & slot the 'somewhat essentials' bag into the very top. That way, if I'm ever in a rush (or just want to add something in the airport but not have it with me in my aeroplane seat), I can easily slide my hand in to the half unzipped suitcase to get to it (without having to lay down the entire thing) - very useful in a constantly moving queue, like airport security!

It's also great because, once I get to my room, I'm usually exhausted regardless of the time. I can easily pull that somewhat essentials purse aside first (without fully unzipping) for any pressing matters needed right then & there - I'll pack my first night's pyjamas in it if I'm arriving at night, or a change of underwear & clothes if I still have some of the day to sightsee. TMI sorry lol but I can't stand wearing my flight clothes any longer than is necessary haha!

Then I lay my unzipped suitcase down for a bird's eye view of everything else - I may not unpack it all then & there, but it sure makes me feel organised to know I don't have to root through everything to find the now essential stuff for my first few hours at my destination (especially when I'm already starting to feel the jetlag, lol)!

This may not be that relevant if you're doing shorter haul flights only, but I hope that helps!

Both my hard shell suitcases (1 medium sized, 1 large) are the same types as yours--with 4 rubberized wheels, two compartments, a zippered screen on one side and compression sides on the other.

Attached to my zippered screen there are some smaller "pocket rooms", where I store underwear, hosiery and jewellery. Usually, I put all other clothes under the zippered screen, rolling most tops and knitwear and laying items like pants and skirts flat on top of them. In the other compartment I put shoes (each pair in a separate plastic or fabric bag), toilet bags, document portfolios, gifts, and, if necessary, an extra piece of outerwear.

I just purchased a similar hard sided set that has exactly the same features as yours. I use the strap side for rolled clothing, packed into zippered cubes unless bulky like jeans. On the zippered mesh side, I put in things like shoes, toiletry items, and tech gadgets because they don't stay in place as well as the clothing does. I put socks and tees in between the odd shaped pieces to complete that side.

Generally speaking I roll clothing except for the largest pieces which I lay flat directly below the strap as the last item.

I have the below linked suitcase in 2 sizes. I hadn't purchased new luggage since 1995! I had a Lark set and the carry on piece is STILL alive and kicking, I'm keeping it to lend out. (The large suitcase got trashed 15 years ago by the baggage handling process.)

That's the kind of suitcases we got before our Austria trip a few years ago. I do the Konmari fold on a lot of things.

I find it is especially useful for the dirty clothes on the way home, actually. They take up way less space that way. And with the two sides, they can be kept well away from the clean clothes.

That’s an interesting question. For me there’s always a side that’s laid down and the one that’s flipped up. So heavy things like shoes go on the down side. The thing about rolling is that it helps minimise wrinkles...

A veteran of over 80 trips both short and long, my 2 wheel roll-aboard soft-side suitcase had to be retired. The retractable handle had been finicky recently and on the way home from my last trip, became stuck in the down position. Once home, I got it to work again, but it jammed up easily. :-( It is 20 yo. So, I went shopping.

The new case is a hard shell ‘spinner’ with 4 rubberized wheels. It opens like a book - with two compartments, unlike my old case that had one compartment. I used packing cubes to keep things organized in my old case. The new case has a zippered ‘screen’ that holds the contents of one side in place, whilst the other side has compression straps.

I did a rough pack of the new case, and it feels like it might hold more than my previous case. (The height and width are identical, but the depth of the new one is 8.5 inches vs the old one’s 7.5.). Rough packed it weighed about 16lbs!

The zip side is so contained, I don’t think I will need the large packing cube. I’m also thinking that instead of rolling clothes (like I did for the soft sided packing cubes) I would use konmari folding techniques.

Has anyone had experience with packing a hard shell suitcase? Or applied konmari methods to packing? How do you pack your suitcase?

I’m always open to packing tips and tricks.
