I have a few pairs with various soles and will not give them up; I think styling them is the key. Wore my Clegerie rafia white platform with the new Toast pants that Angie featured a few weeks back and they were great. I did not go to the heavy lug sole on any of them and when looking for new, resisted going down that road as I felt the "bus had left the terminal". I did go big into loafers but no lug soles, the last pair more like the original BASS. My hairdresser wears "dainty" derbies with dresses and pants all the time and she is in her 30's and very stylish.

I think a non-chunky oxford would work the same way.

Carol, you’re right about the variety of ways they could be styled, depending on the whims of the wearer.

I was thinking about them in the context of the Alison Bornstein “wrong shoe” theory. That might mean — for me — wearing them with something like my wide-legged pants, which usually beg for a chunkier shoe. For some people it may mean wearing them with shorts (not for me and my tree-trunk legs) or dresses (hmmm, maybe but might feel *too* wrong for me). It’s got to feel authentic!

I looked back and the last time I posted about wearing them, it was the patterned Clergerie pair with my olive chinos and a simple shirt. Not bad, but not super inspiring — perhaps all the pieces together were a bit too classic. Maybe I should try them with something like my Maria Cornejo pants… I just realized that the stock photo has them styled that way.

So...I'm quite better at doing my own thing than following trends, and these look good to me if you wear them right. I also bet, that max 1 or 2 years, they'll be more in style. If these are still in good shape, I would keep them.

What I remember from the last time these were in, is that people were wearing them in a "loud" way--with linen vests, ditsy dresses, and porkpie hats. If you wore it in a quieter way, you could wear them right now, I'm sure. You know, neutral pants or jeans, simple shirts.

But...if it were me, I might pair them with harem pants and a giant shirt. Like a Denise Cosby look. She would snatch those up.

My problem feet pretty much dictate my shoe choice, so the only shoes that work for me these days are oxfords/derbys. Clogs pinch by the end of the day. My right foot doesn't really bend, so flat super bendy thin soled shoes torture me. I will be wearing lug soles as long as I can source them. Unfortunately, mine at least are so clunky that they don't look to great with skirts and dresses. For that, I wear the black patent pointy toe shoes at the very end.

But I love your shoes! And really, all the others that YLFers have posted here. Too bad I can't buy them off of everyone.

Carla, those sound like they would have been so nice for you! A shame the size wasn’t right. Second-hand footwear is tough — much of it seems too worn and has molded to the foot of the previous wearer, so a pristine pair is a find indeed!

Just a suggestion: If you colour match your oxfords to one or two other items in your outfit, this might help to make the outfit look cohesive and intended.

Part of why I’m saying these styles don’t seem trendy is because they have been largely absent for years at retail, except for a couple of specific designers who specialize in them (Office of Angela Scott comes to mind). At least this slim-soled version. Footwear is the area where I tend to be a bit more trend-driven, so I’m pretty conscious of this.

Part of me thinks, if I come up with styling that feels right for me at this moment, I’ll wear them and feel ahead of the curve, LOL. I think that’s a good strategy for you with tunics too, Brooklyn! I need to take advantage of the era when shorter tops are trending since tunics are mostly awful on me.

If you still like them in principle, I would hang on to them. The fashion winds change eventually and they will have their moment again. And it could be you are just not in the mood for them now but they will feel fresh again after a little rest.

I’ve recently started wearing tunics again. They are not on trend at all but suddenly I feel interested in them again after a long rest. I suspect their moment will come again too.

Oh -- how am I styling them to feel current? Well, I wear them with my barrel jeans, my Dries van Noten pants (which are actually from the 2013 season, but whatever!), with my oversized cropped denim jacket, with my asymmetrical skirt and/or "our" sarong shorts (long shorts!). I also wear with midi dresses, especially the white ones (which are a bit lower profile on the foot and look just a bit dressier than a sneaker, but not as refined as a "girly" flat.

Well, I wear them, regardless. I have one pair with a platform/ flatform sole and a couple that are flat and I wear them constantly. I prefer them to my sneakers, actually. But these are summer styles -- made of knit material.

I tried to buy them in the leather and the fit was entirely different -- they did not stay on, despite being a tie-up style they were too wide at the heel. So I sent them back.

I tend to think Irina is right -- lug soles are probably on their way out, though they will always have a place for more rugged outdoor wear.

I would happily buy a leather pair of oxfords, with or without a slight platorm, if I could find one that fit. I like yours and think you were wise to hang onto them.

I have a pair of very traditional perforated leather oxfords in a metallic pewter which were pricey and of top quality ( for what I can afford) . Every time I looked at them last winter ( they seem to structured and crisp for summer wear ) I ended up putting them back . Just seemed a little out of step ( no pun intended ) . I agree with Irina that low profile sneakers are the thing now , but I’m not sure that same trend translates into a more formal shoe . Maybe it does - I live in the middle of the country so what do I know ? Lol. Now that I think about it , I can see a traditional oxford looking good with a looser longer lower rise pant or jean . Something that has a more relaxed feel …… Sort of that juxtaposition that Amy M likes ?

I would wear with full length wide leg pants or denim. Or a longer skirt.

I am not fully subscribing but more refined footwear is trending here- low profile retro sneakers and ballet flats and minimal sandals.

Well, lug sole will not make them trendy, rather the opposite. A new trend in sneakers is the low profile ones, retro looking. I hardly see lug soles on trendy people here. I love and wear my oxfords with cropped pants/jeans.

Glad I’m not alone!

The Clergerie patterned ones and the teal suede Freda Salvador are so distinctive I don’t want to give them up, plus they are super well-made and were not cheap.

The Anna Sui/Hush Puppies and Cole Haans are so comfortable I just can’t let go. They weren’t expensive and they’re 10+ years old, so not so precious, but I’m reluctant to let got of comfortable classic shoes that may come back around.

This style was good for me when skinny and slim jeans were trending — I’d cuff or roll a little with bare ankles. Styles are different now — I’ll have to try them with socks and maybe some other pants or jeans. Everything more delicate on the foot now looks weird and off-balance now that I’m a larger size than I was back then, and I’ve gotten used to clompier footwear styles, which balance my thick legs better. LOL
