I find in general it is harder to combine an oversized item with a slim bottoms and get the proportions right.

I see that many struggle to wear an oversized garments and a blazer is not a first thing one should try when exploring a new silhouette.

To those who still think one needs to be young, slim and tall to wear this style, I suggest to watch YouTube videos of street fashion in Japan.

The true OS blazer is not for me either. As Griffin said, these blazers could be best paired to skinny bottoms-which I don't do nowadays. But, I love a blazer with great shoulders, a looser fit and longer length! This will fit me sometimes fluid (with ease) because am tall, long torso and have wide shoulders-and is a great alternative to the tailored/structured ones I have---but am not thin (nor young:-)) anymore- so my body takes up space-and I have to watch close for the optimal proportions on me.

I know this is a bit old but I have some more thoughts ;)
I appreciate gryffin’s specific fit notes, and tend to agree the reason mine feels slightly off at times is probably the shoulder fit. I did initially also assume that I’d be wearing it only with slim pants, but as I posted a while ago Carol S inspired me to try mine with wider, longer jeans (not dramatically wide but definitely not skinny or even straight, and no ankle showing), and I enjoy the effect very much.
Fashion trend images tend to come at us first from a very specific angle - as worn on tall, slim, young women. And that can imprint us with specific ideas about what works - ideas that aren’t necessarily true. The skill (and fun!) is in figuring out how to make those looks that appeal work for the individual. I love that we have access to a much larger range of images these days, via social media and brands diversifying their models. I’m not a slim person in general, yet I’ve always loved oversized clothes. It started when I was a preteen with a rapidly changing body that I didn’t want to show to the world, and some 80s fashions that weren’t about being sexy or body con or whatever you want to call it. I’m not ashamed of my middle aged body, so it’s no longer a matter of ‘hiding’, but I also don’t feel the need to slim myself down visually. Simply rolling up the sleeves of my blazer reduces the visual overwhelm factor and makes me quite happy.

Sorry I have not read all the responses but did want to chime in because I have a number of "oversized" blazers. It's all in the proportions for me. First and OS blazer must still fit in the shoulders and the sleeves should be tapered and hit at your preferred point. The body should be straight but the stance should be lower with one or two buttons ideally so it can be worn open, or closed like a blazer dress. Material needs to have some substance but not be stiff. I always do OS with lean - so leggings, skinnies, monochrome, maybe with a scoop neck for turned back or 3/4 sleeve to provide structure, tunics with hip belts for structure and underlayers should be similar in length to blazer, long tunics, mini skirts or dresses with leggings or tights with a great bootie or boot is flattering and comfortable. I will wear a shift dress or tunic but only with leggings or tights, long over lean rules for me. Again pants for me skinnies only for contrast. It's really all in the mix or fit and no one size never fits all but it's a look I really enjoy but I'm always careful about fit, color, proportion.

Brooklyn, I think you put your finger on why I’m loving my parachute pants! They fit nicely at the waist and high hip and then just float down the rest of my legs, camouflaging the heaviest part of me in a way that looks intentional yet chill. After so many years of skinnies, I’m loving a little bit of oversized in pants.

The one thing that annoys me about these lack of descriptors on 'oversized' items is it begs the question... 'oversized for whom?'

What about plus sized folk, who need a 45+ inch bust for a tailored fit? Or a tall person, on whom 25"+ sleeves don't even reach their thumbs?? I do a lot of my shopping online these days, where listing these sorts of measurements really matters...

The closest 'oversized' blazer I have hits well past my hips & wrists - part of an (obviously not modern!) wool pantsuit. It's probably the closest I'll get because the shoulder pads(!) help the fit to look intentional (instead of 'drooping' dropped shoulders). 'Sartorial drowning' is always a risk for us petite folk

I love the oversized pants look. In fact, I have one pair that are labelled “anti-fit”. I think it suits my body shape because I carry most of my weight in my legs. I like the rare and wondrous feeling of “room” when wearing pants. I’m not into oversized jackets (never say never) but I suspect I’d feel differently if I had slim legs. I do think that, while it has its fashiony extremes, the oversized look is a welcome change from body con looks.

I certainly cannot pull off the WAY oversized (a la Hailey Beiber)! But, ditto Irina - I have found that the devil's in the details for me. I have really broad shoulders for my size and a long torso, so most jackets fit me strangely anyway. Too fitted/cropped can look like I've shrunk my little sister's jacket. Too big or not intentionally oversized, and I look like David Byrne. I appreciate an exaggerated fit, when it hits right in all the right places.

I love oversized looks they I see out there on the internet and definitely wear some myself. Like Suz, I have to be particular about the details on my frame. I have eyeballed that Frankie Shop blazer (second hand) but cannot carry it off - not just height wise but shoulder wise. I would if I could, happily. I looked at the article and found it sort of funny, especially the comments. Clearly not written for a fashion crowd.

Well I thought I would love them, but so far the ones I have tried look a bit ridiculous on me. But never say never! I remember when balloon sleeves and puffed shoulders came in a few years ago, initially I hated them, and now I’m ok with them, so, I usually adapt to things after a while!
I agree with Ljp; it really depends if the practicality of it will work for one’s needs.
For me… probably not.
I do have an oversized jacket that is short/semi cropped though, and it works well. It’s wide but not long. Maybe a long but narrow one could work too… just probably not both long and wide together….

I’m another one who enjoys the look of an oversize blazer but it would lack context in my real life . I think it works best if you’re in retail , the arts , or are a creative professional . The exaggerated looks photographed on influencers or the Hailey Biebers of the world kinda make me laugh .

Angie has taught me never to say Never, but I can’t imagine myself ever wearing slouchy or even boyfriend jeans or pants. I am short with extra short legs, so they tend to look like I’m walking on my knees. Really oversized looks can easily swamp me and make me look like an unhoused person who lucked out at the charity shop. But if I were making the rounds of thrift shops with DD and happened to come across a Boys size 16 blazer (maybe from a bar mitzvah?) I would at least try it on.

I wore oversized blazers back in the early 90s when they were known as boyfriend blazers. I wore mine with stirrup pants tucked into tall boots. I would consider wearing one now, but the structure would need to be there in all the right places and it would have to be part of a pantsuit.

I’d love to have that cool girl oversized look work on me, lol but realistically, my version needs to have as Angie mentioned some structure and it can’t be too baggie or loose otherwise its not doing me any favours and my body frame just looks swallowed up in it.

I like to wear my clothes roomier - with some or a lot of fluidity. Tailoring/ structure AND looseness in all the right places.

I wore OVERSIZED tops and toppers in the '80s with great joy! But they had GIGANTIC shoulder pads, which helped enormously. I'm not in the mood to do that again - yet :)

I really love the feel of oversized things. And even the look. I love that it's come into fashion. About 7 years ago I ordered a pair of jeans on final sale and they were way too big. I belted them and started wearing them anyway, and found I really liked them! Now I have filled them in a bit but they are still baggy and fun. And have more recently acquired another pair on the baggier end of things. They are the two I love the most now. I also have an oversize wool turtleneck sweater I bought a few months ago that is like a warm blanket and an oversize quilted army liner jacket that was my brothers that I've been wearing for about 6 or 7 years too. So I guess I have embraced the oversized look!

I'm with Irina -- anyone can wear anything (almost) if the details are right. It takes discernment to figure out precisely how to translate that to your own frame/ body type. And for each of us, certain types of look will be more difficult to pull off than others.

It's a mistake to think the exact same piece could work well for every body -- I mean, unless it's a scarf or something, I guess.

I love the idea of an oversized blazer, for example -- but I do find the silhouette difficult to wear. Partly because I'm not tall -- it is difficult to get the proportions right. It's easier for me to experiment with oversized items that have a bit of fluidity to them, and that don't cut me in half (s a long blazer tends to do). So as a smaller person, I can try a slightly oversized or man-style coat, maybe (and in fact, I did buy a slightly oversized pea coat, which seems to belie my idea that I shouldn't cut myself in half, but whatever...). Or I could try a fluid and slightly oversized or dropped shoulder sweater (which I bought). Or BF or baggy jeans, which I can wear with more fitted or classic pieces up top.

I tend to think oversize looks best on anyone if it is very structured or very fluid. The images that Jonesy shows tend to blend structure with fluidity.

I am skipping the oversized jacket chapter. I also find myself getting a bit tired of my wide leg jeans and pants; I bought my first pair in 2017, so I am guessing that trend may be the next thing to go. In the meantime I dug out some old jeans, straight legs and boot cuts, and am wearing them for a bit of a break.

Well I don’t wear blazers much anymore, but I have been trying the oversized trend myself with some jeans and sweaters, and I’m not really loving it on me. I think your body type really matters in order to be able to carry off certain trends properly.

Realistically, you have to wonder just how many poses and photos these models and influencers actually took to get the best look for their IG feed etc. It’s one thing to have it look good in a very specific way in a photo but its little wonder why it doesn’t look the same on most of us.

My thoughts are similar to Irina's: I like to wear lots of my clothes loose/oversized and I am certainly not young or thin (though, yes, I am tall!). Going back to high school, college, and post-college, I always wore loose clothes and feel most comfortable in them. When the trend was low-rise jeans with tight, cropped tops, I was very unhappy and had a hard time finding clothes that fit. So I am happy to find lots of options at retail at the moment that work for my body and my preferred style. And I certainly don't feel sloppy or ridiculous. But horses for courses :)! Everyone should feel comfortable and happy wearing what suits them best, whether it's form-fitting, tailored, baggy, giant, whatever! I agree with the article that there can be a decided gulf between what appears on Instagram and what feels right for "real life."

My sense is that loose-fitting clothes have staying power, vs. being a flash in the fashion pan (I've added a bunch of runway looks from 10 years ago, that still look fresh and elegant to my eye), but of course fashion will evolve as it always does, to keep us on our toes! And there is tons of diversity and variety in terms of what is stylish, so there is always something for everyone.

I have exactly one oversized garment in my closet - a fisherman’s style sweater. I’ve been looking for the right one for 10 years (and have an early YLF thread to prove it!). Also, I may have missed the boat with a NAS winter coat, when I sized down for a more conventional fit.

My preference is for what Angie terms fluid fit - garments with ease and manageable volume vs being truly oversized.

I was just thinking some more about this. Thing is, I love oversized coats - the bigger the better, so not sure why I feel so different about blazers.

I'm dealing with "oversized trend" for some years now starting with all the tee shirts became big, wide and slouchy looking. Some things look great with slightly more volume and some just ridiculous - looking at those ginormous jackets and full volume wide leg pants. The absence of petit versions of the same style is one of the biggest problems - the petit sizes did get more axed during pandemic times ( and so some tall or plus sizes unfortunately ).
I prefer some structure because that feeling of wearing someone's else clothes is not the one I'm looking for .

Helena, no need for apologies. I'm of opinion that anyone can wear anything. One doesn't have to be this or that. Lots of styles look more flattering on models, skinny jeans or mini skirts, come to mind. Everything looks good on them, it's their job to look fantastic doesn't matter the style or shape. I never understood the notion that one must be a model to look good in ****. If I to believe it, I would never ever wear a bathing suit :)
