Waving from the northern suburbs and popping in to say that you should check out Loft, they have petite pants/jeans available in a curvy cut. And they are having a huge sale right now.

Lighter weight clothes will be out of stores very soon, so pick up some things now.
I like the idea about a week's worth of clothes. Plus I'm of the opinion that one should have one outfit that can go to a funeral and one that can go out to a party. Believe it or not, it can often be the same outfit with a change of accessories.
Accessories-I love the way a scarf can change an outfit. Or a fun necklace.
Often I have better luck in the outlets.
Watch the washing instructions. An inexpensive blouse that has to be dry cleaned is not a bargain.
Congrats on your weight loss.
And enjoy the options.

Ooh, I love this thread! You've (we've) gotten great advice I'll reiterate: great fitting bras, invest in the things you wear the most (jeans), and try Old Navy and Target. Likewise, I love Into mind for silhouette ideas! Congratulations on the weight loss - what an accomplishment!

A word about the process of revamping a wardrobe. What you need right now, is enough patterned v-neck t-shirts (spills, visual interest without thinking too hard) to get you through one week. Really. That is all you need for NOW. Then, you can take your time considering and collecting your other wardrobe needs. Keep reading the Blog, the Forum and the Finds for inspiration, and it also is a way to have other people do the hunting for us ;)

I don't have the same body type as you guys, so I don't know how this works, but what about some cotton cropped pants, given the weather and the run around that you do with kiddos. Cropped pants are really versatile, in my experience running around film sets. Pockets, my dear! I haven't seen Zappos.com mentioned. They have a ton of inventory with a wide price range. That's where I'd go for cropped pants, if that works for petites.

If you have time, swing by your local Goodwill (go when they open if you want a quiet experience) and shop their shirts / tops. Items are between $1.99 - $9.99 usually, and you can take a stack into the fitting room. There's not a lot of pressure to "love" an item, because if it tides you over for the rest of summer while you are revamping - that's it's intention! Grab a denim jacket ($20-30) or cardigan while you are there. I don't buy jeans or pants at the Goodwill, because those are my investment pieces and harder to fit.

When you're ready for shoes, depending on how much you stand, consider investing in some of these Mephistos I've appended. The Spenco slides have a great ergonomic footbed, too. If you don't stand too much and just need fun fashion, then Converse slips or Vans would be super cute with your job.

Wow, congratulations. I'm excited you're on the forum, because I'm counting on you to post updates on your journey.

p.s. when I lost a lot of weight, I took my favorite items to a tailor to be altered. Most important to get altered and keep were leather coats, dresses and such. I did my version of mental math, and I decided to not get my blouses / shirts altered. At $25+ each, I thought I'd rather buy a few new ones, than to get a bunch of existing ones altered. I still miss one of the shirts though, haha!

I just want to say how impressed I am at how thoughtful you are about your wardrobe, Rachel, and about how you want it to evolve and where you are heading. I wish I had this much insight into my own evolving style. I think you have the benefit of both a clean slate start and a very keen mind. I'm really excited to see where you go from here. It looks to me like you're getting good advice so I'll leave it to the experts but welcome and good luck!!

unfrumped, jeans are going to be fine, so that's where I'm concentrating for pants.

DonnaF, thanks for the welcome! Sounds like we have similar body types. I also have to hem petite pants. I'm long-waisted, but have short arms to match my short legs, so in short sleeves, I'm often fine with regular sizes, but should do Petites or the tailor for long-sleeved tops. I had a devil of a time this past winter trying to find a coat suitable for the depths of winter that didn't bunch like crazy around my wrists.

I love Nordstrom, but don't have the card. Am planning to run over to Nordstrom Rack at lunch today.

And finally: belts (not ordered by colour:-)
I've found that belts in shades of brown (dark, lighter, cognac), black, white (or cream or off-white), metallics and animal prints are all quite versatile.

To start, I would pick one or two that work with most of the items in the colour palettes/wardrobe capsules you are building. Afterwards you can always add some extra ones just for fun.

Do shout if you need more help with any of this. We are more than happy to help you look for items, help put together wardrobe capsules etc.

Welcome to the forum, Rachel!

You've done a brilliant job of analyzing your current wardrobe situation and future needs. And lots of excellent suggestions from the other ladies.

A few more thoughts:
- Adding items in different silhouettes and pieces with textural interest will make any wardrobe feel more varied, versatile and can help prevent feeling bored with your clothes. Opting for some pieces with prints instead of only solid items can also help.
Picking one or a few colour palettes in advance and building one or several mix-and-match capsules around those, will help ensure that you get a cohesive whole and can get the most versatility and outfit combinations out of your purchases (and the items already in your wardrobe).

These posts might help:
http://youlookfab.com/2012/04/.....sules-101/

http://youlookfab.com/2012/03/.....y-outfits/

http://youlookfab.com/2013/08/.....-for-fall/

> Different silhouettes: e.g. high-low hemline tops, peplums, asymmetric detailing, different kind of necklines, tailored/drapey/boxy/cropped/tunic-length, crossover tops, knotted detailing, layered pieces...

> Textural interest: e.g. lace, eyelet, tweed, pleats, ruffles, colour block, see-through detailing, crochet, self-patterns, buttons, jacquard, grommets, studs, perforations, mixed media pieces, slub knits, crinkled fabrics, linen, marled effect. ETA: You can do this with clothing but also with footwear and/or accessories.

This blog post might help.

- Also worth thinking about upfront: your climate, how dressy/casual you have to be and/or want to be at work (e.g. will you need to wear a jacket every day? If not, would you like to, and what kind of indoor toppers do you love: blazers (knit or woven), moto jackets, utility jackets, cardigans, bombers, long gilet...), which materials do you prefer (knits or wovens), will you want to wear the same clothes on the weekend or do you need a different capsule for that, etc.

- If you like to wear scarves, adding one or two fun ones is an easy way to add colour, pattern and pizzazz to any outfit.
- Jewellery can also help to finish off a look and/or add polish.
- Adding one or two belts is a great idea (unless you never tuck or semi-tuck your tops, then they're probably not an urgent need;-)
- Add a great bag - Things to consider: Do you need something larger (if you need to take a lot of stuff with you to work, e.g.), do you commute on foot or use public transport (some styles are easier to carry), do you want a neutral colour or would you like your bag to add a pop of colour to your outfits (then opt for a bright or unusual colour, or perhaps an animal print, etc.)

I've collected a bunch of items to illustrate the things I'm talking about here. They are just examples, but if something appeals: many of the items are currently on sale ;-)
I'll add them per colour, that might make it easier to think in "colour palettes" and or "wardrobe capsules".

Hi, fellow Petite! Congratulations on your weight loss and all the hard work that must have gone into it! Are you a Petite on both top and bottom? I am very long-waisted with legs so short I generally need to hem even Petite pants, but I can sometimes wear regular size dresses and short-sleeve tops. For another store not mentioned: My DD lives in CHI, and she says Limited carries Petites.

I also recommend Nordstrom. I go online and put stuff I like/want in my Wish List and wait until it is marked down by 40% which is almost always. If you have a Nordstrom debit or credit card, you can get some alterations for free if you paid full price for the garment. Otherwise, you pay and get back the amount you paid in Nordstrom Rewards which function a bit like a gift card. With a card, you get up to $100 in alteration rewards; after you spend $2000 at Nordstrom you get $200 in alteration rewards and so on. If you normally pay to have jeans, pants, sleeves and hems shortened, this can be quite a savings. It has also prompted me to buy and keep items that I might otherwise have returned due to less than perfect fit.

BUT!!! Remember that just because somethings fits (or would be a fit with a minor alteration) and flatters does NOT mean you have to buy it! It took me a long time to wrap my head around this concept. The item also had to fit in with the rest of my wardrobe and where I wanted to go with it, had to reflect the life I really lead, and be appropriate for the temperatures I'm in.

I say do Retail Research!
Will jeans be acceptable? If so then a couple of pairs in your best fit (s) are key. If not, or if only some days, then some kind of washable ponte pant or a nice-fitting modern chino.

Meaning, keep in mind the general dress code you are aiming for--will it be casual pant, top, loafers/flats and then add a cardigan or knit blazer whenever you want to be a bit more authoritative or polished? That sort of thing will get you started.

I like to think of "Aspiration" and then find what is closest to that in terms of budget, fabrics ( as for folks who need washable, or no-iron, the sort of criteria that rules in or out some items.

So you can have an Aspirational,,, Fit; Style; Brand;

I will bet that you know how to dress your body type ( or Angie has great posts on that) and have a sense of what looks good on you. If you do, meaning you can "recognize it", then just try on things in your local retailers across a spectrum depending on who you've got. Target and Old Navy for less expensive; discount stores like TJMaxx and Marshall's; typical mall stores such as Gap and Limited, then AT and BR and Talbots; moderate dept stores like Kohl's and Belk; online there's a huge choice but for me I waste a lot of time on returns if I have no idea about them to start with.

Find out who "gets you". But, maybe that brand is too expensive at full price or even some sale prices; or, maybe that brand skews toward dry-clean-only--still, you will have a sense of how you'd like to look and you use that to see how close you can come to it or which are the hardest to fit items (can we say, pants!) that you might get and the fill in with less expensive tops.

At the moment, check Banana Republic sale for tomato, White House Black Market for green (might not be bright enough, though).

Thanks for the great comments and links! I'm in Chicago, so luckily I have lots of shopping options. In terms of colors, I'd like to add some greens (I'm really attracted to a bright kind of emerald green right now), tomato red, and hot turquoise, along with some olives and creams. My current closet has a lot of black, teal blues, and burgundys/dark fuschias.

Liz, thanks for the advice to go to Old Navy and Kohl's--a couple more pairs of pants would definitely make things easier.

Suz & Rachylou, I loved Angie's post on style renewal. I did get bra fitted professionally 2 months ago; just need to actually get a couple more new bras in my correct size. New glasses are long overdue and on the list to do this summer. And hair--um, I've had the same style since 2002, and I've been cutting it myself since about then. So, uh, yeah, I've got some work to do there! I just have no idea where to start with finding a stylist--as a "kid," I went to mall hair places and they were always terrible.

SandyG, thanks for tips on basics and petite sizes!

Welcome, and congratulations!

I also joined YLF after a big weight loss and years of not shopping or shopping only at thrift/ discount.

Angie's advice for every style renewal is to start with hair (does it need a change?), specs (if you wear them); bras (get a new fitting if needed!). Here is her useful post on style renewal; it includes links to lots of other helpful posts.

My biggest piece of advice for you would be -- patience. Especially on a budget, it may take some time before you're satisfied with what's in your closet. And your body is continuing to change, so that's another factor. I'd ensure you have a few "fallback" outfits for the work you're about to do. You'll also want updated footwear -- you get a lot of "bang for the buck" with shoes and your feet will be happy for the options.

My quick advice would be to go to an Old Navy (if you have one) and a Kohl's and try on a whole bunch of pants so you can get another couple of pairs. Both of these stores have petite sizes. That would make getting dressed right now much easier and buy you some time for the whole wardrobe rebuilding things.

welcome! I'm a relative newbie myself & I think you're going to love it here as much as I have. Lots of kind hearted & solid advice.

There are some great tips above already, but I'd echo what SandyG said about basics. It's also really helped to develop a couple of quick outfits that I know I feel good in so I know I always have an good option available when I'm tired or in a hurry.

Waving hi, another petite hourglass here.

Good ideas for styling the basics and keeping a small # of items each season.
If you want more art/ballerina/style look into Audrey Hepburn capsule wardrobes, wearing and styling a few basic items with flair.
http://www.withoutastyle.com/2.....lance.html an elementary teacher's wardrobe blog. Stripes are your friend.
http://www.theviviennefiles.co.....ed-on.html The Vivienne Files is a colorful website to browse, a multitude of ideas, but a bit of fantasy unless you have a big budget. The link is based on blues, greens and gray forming a capsule wardrobe.

Do you live around retail petite shops like Talbots or such? It's easier to try things on in person the first time rather than order online. When you know how an item fits, then you could order it. Gap/Banana Republic have nice petite sizes but their retails shops near me don't carry a petite dept.

My life got easier when I bought some essentials: 2 great fitting bras, a pair of skinny jeans, white jeans for summer, a denim jacket with a hint of stretch, a few black tops, a casual black dress, a black and a blue print maxi skirt, and 'nude' wedge sandals. I love vintage belts to highlight my waist, and learning to semi-tuck tops will change your life. YLF is a fab place to learn and contribute! Hit the ground running and you'll look great at your new job.

Welcome! What a good assessment. That's the place to start. I think it will be worth it to do some window shopping and planning before buying. Agree about a bra fitting being the first order of the day. Angie always recommends that. My fave lesson learned here is to tally up how you spend your time and proportion your wardrobe accordingly. (I used to have a completely random
assortment of one-off outfits...)

Do you have a Pinterest board? What colours are you interested in?

Congrats on the weight loss and the new job! I echo CocoCat's advice to read Angie's archived posts on wardrobe planning and closet editing. Since you've lost weight you'll definitely want to budget for a new bra or two and make sure you are properly fitted. You could consider putting together a small mix/match capsule for work that will give you lots of outfit options with minimal pieces (I will probably do something similar for fall). Angie's capsule posts can help you think about the pieces you need.

I agree fluid fits still dominate the racks, but there are some waist defining options if you keep your eyes open. Don't be discouraged by the color ways in stores. Many retailers seem to be on a model where they turnover the merchandise pretty quickly. Banana Republic comes to mind: dark florals in April, red and blue in June, coral now. What colors do you want to add?

Hello rachelthrives. Welcome to the forum. You will get some great advice here.

It's Winter where I am and I'm not seeing a lot of colour apart from tomato red. The rest is mainly black/white/grey/denim.

Hi! I’m new around here, and my wardrobe is in pitiful shape.
I have a lot of work ahead of me, and I could use some moral support!

Me right now:

35. Haven’t really shopped since 2007. My “shopping” over the past several years has been “go to thrift shop, look at tops and dresses, buy anything that looks okay.” My standards have risen, and I want things that really fit and are in colors that I want in my wardrobe.

Have lost about 50 pounds in the last year; still losing and hoping to lose 10-15 more.

Very small wardrobe. I recently purged everything that was worn out or REALLY didn’t fit, which has left me with…not much. Even with the things I kept, almost everything would look better at a smaller size.

I feel hard to fit. I’m 5’0” with a long torso and short legs and a curvy/hourglass figure.

I’m changing jobs in a couple of months. I’ll want to make some adjustments based on that—dressing more for the weather since my new workplace doesn't have the best climate control, and probably fewer dresses and skirts (working with kids and teens in an environment where on any given day I could be down on the floor with a 5-year-old or unclogging a toilet)

I’m taking a significant salary cut to go to NewJob. Once I’m at NewJob, I really do need to watch the pennies. So even though part of me wants to start buying more high-end ($50-75 per item instead of $15-25?), I don’t want to get into habits I won’t be able to keep up.

My most desperate wardrobe problems:

I have just two pairs of pants, both jeans. (One of these was just purchased on Thursday, so you can see how bad things were
before this!) One pair of “emergency” black trousers.

I have basically been wearing the same pair of shoes every day for the past 5 years (black Timberlands). I recently bought a denim
wedge-heeled espadrille. Those are the only shoes I own, except for two pairs of “around the house” sneakers and a pair of “emergency” pinchy high heels.

One “good” bra and one bra that’s passable. Big cup, small band, so I’m in the land of “order online and return a lot”

Zero belts. Zero handbags. I carry a Swiss Gear backpack to commute.

I’m just plain bored with my wardrobe! I feel like everything is a neutral or teal. I want brightness and light! I put together a palette that includes some colors I want in my wardrobe, but in the stores I’m seeing mostly neutrals and coral. Where do you shop for color?

I’m also not seeing much with a defined waist in stores right now—maybe I’m looking in the wrong places? I really have no idea how/where to shop as an adult!

Any advice is appreciated! I love what I’ve seen of this forum so far.
