Usually over. I want the flexibility of being able to remove layers if I end up getting warmer than usual, like going for a brisk walk, sitting in a sunny room, or housecleaning. Layering tops doesn't usually work well since the hems slide up the hip and make a bulky wrinkly mess.

Both, but I only layer under in the coldest conditions or at times when I need to look as if I am wearing a single layer, if that makes sense -- i.e. dressy occasions when it is simply going to be too cold in the room!

I’m more of an over person. I warm up relatively quickly, so I have learned to stick with light underlayers when I do chose them. I hate being hot, so I am careful these days to avoid heavy sweaters and toppers unless it’s truly cold and I will be in an environment that won’t be blasting heat.

Right now, it’s chilly in the morning but warm in the afternoon. So I just wear a sweatshirt. Later when it’s colder all day, I’ll add a camisole. Right around Christmas I might add very lightweight long underwear. We’re not anywhere near as cold as Canada or the US Midwest, though. I think it’s only been below zero (F) here a couple of times in the last twenty five years.

Team both. I am basically a human ice cube from mid-October to late May. I don't love much layering from a fashion standpoint (for myself that is) so the underlayers are my preferred method of staying warm but needs must.

Definitely both! I run cold. You'll never hear me complain about heat or humidity, but even a little bit of chill renders me somewhat useless. I pretty much always have a down vest and throw it on indoors for an instant temperature boost as needed. I start wearing a sleeveless base-layer when daytime temps are in the 50s/60s Fahrenheit, and once highs are in the 30s/40s, I prefer a long sleeve baselayer. Below freezing, I add long john bottoms.

I've realized I prefer base-layers that don't look too much like undergarments so I can remove layers if need be. The Icebreaker merino tanks are my very favorite for transitional seasons. They are great for boosting the warmth of simple pullovers or button-front shirts, and I don't heistate to wear them on their own. I can't do tight-fitting wool on my arms or legs, so my deep winter baselayers are mostly silk or synthetic if it's really cold and/or I'm going to be doing something active, and cotton or cotton blends the rest of the time.

The past few years I've come to really appreciate thermal long johns under my pants, and I do select pants with layering in mind. A lot of pants are too tight in the leg to accommodate long johns comfortably. I also don't love it when there's a huge discrepancy in rise (like when your pants sit at your hip but your long johns come up to your waist) so I try to pay attention to that too.

Sock layering is my newest discovery. A pair of thin silk liner socks underneath a pair of wool socks does such a good job preventing clammy feet!

Over, excepting tights under skirts. It usually isn't cold enough here to need thermals, and when it is, I spend as little time outside as I can!

Right now it's warm enough for sleeveless or short sleeve in the day, but in the mornings and at night I need a little jacket or sweater.

I also do both and am another fan of Uniqlo airism and HEATTECH camisoles, long sleeve tops and turtlenecks. Often I also find myself reaching for a merino Smartwool crew. I wear Darn Tough socks when outdoors in all kinds of weather. I add additional layers (down jackets or full length coats, knits) as needed for walks and hikes. A wool beanie and variety of gloves/mittens are used in cool or cold conditions. I also have rechargeable hand warmers to combat Raynaud’s! I love being outdoors but do not like to be cold!

I do both. It is cold enough today to do that. I am wearing a light weight long sleeved dress over underwear, a tank top, stockings and a slip. Over the dress o am wearing a polyester poncho and cotton woven scarf that matches the dress.. I have been comfortable all day inside in this outfit . To go out I would add a light topper, probably a long trench coat. Without either the top or under layers this would. Be too cool to wear today. The scarf is needed to meet my neck warm. The stockings are needed to warm legs and feet. The print poncho adds core warmth without adding anything heavy. I only wear polyester in cool transitional times and cold winter, as it is too warm for summer.

Both. In winter I add a cami (I use Uniqlo AIRism) and in super cold weather I will add a LS silk tee and silk tights. I hate heavy under layers, because then I overheat and can’t shed them easily. Silk is the perfect insulator and is easy to wear under any style of pants or tops without the need to size up.

A bit under but mostly over. The temperature can change a lot in the course of the day, and indoors can be colder than outdoors. I need to be able to take on and off layers easily.

Oh yes! Base layers under knitwear is a must…

Yes - I have learned to consider extra bulk in my sizing. My favorite yellow pea coat fit great, but only over a lightweight base. Fine in San Fran, but not in Chicago!!

Both if it’s really cold. I keep my home on the cool side so I tend to build layers with Heattech first, then a mid-layer top, and then something over that if I’m really chilled. If I’m going to go for a walk, I’ll add some tights under my bottoms too. Of course, I’ll strip some of the layers off when I get home and have warmed up! I do so much laundry in the winter.
