I don't dig 'em. I had an "aha!" moment recently about why. In short: in order for your legs to look shapely, you have to either expose the knee joint or the ankle joint. OTK boots mask both, making your legs look shapeless and stumpy. A way around this is to wear OTK boots that are skin-tight, showing the shape of your legs, and high-heeled, which always makes legs look longer and more shapely. Unfortunately then you look like the Julia Roberts prostitute character in Pretty Woman, which is not what most women are going for!

If you turn them down, they are no longer OTK boots -- they're just knee boots that make you look like a pirate (or, yes, a muskateer!). I sort of dig that, but not enough to actually buy a pair.

Lyrebird, that is a fabulous inspiration board for an obviously difficult-to-master look. It's not one I'm ever likely to get around to trying on --- but it's educational and heartening to see it can be done with verve and elegance. Thank you so very much for bringing this to the table!

What a fabulous woman, Lyrebird, thankyou for sharing! Her boots look like the cream of the crop of OTK boots, which may explain their beautiful fit and flex!

Princess Mathilde below wrote the textbook on how to wear these with a skirt. She has been wearing Natan OTKs since at least 2001. Note that a simpler outfit helps prevent the "costumey"'effect. Hose colour and hem length are important too. I like her black outfit (Feb 2012) the best.
With Princess Charlene's brown OTKs ( pic 2) you can see what happens when the wearer sits. Stiff leather pokes up a lot: I think the Benelux princesses' suede Natans are more pliable and therefore less likely to stick up. It does help IMO that Mathilde's suede OTKs are not skintight. The fit of OTKs' is really important as Girl X says - they mustn't be droopy either, as you can see from the pics on this blog

I have some from Duo boots so they're a nice skin-like fit around the calves to wear with skirts.

That said, much as I love the look, my dreams of more OTK boots have been shelved. I'm like Krishnidoux, I find them hard to move in and I'm super careful about not bagging the knees out so I fold them down every time I sit down. I suppose loose fitting ones are easier to wear, but that's simply not the look that owns me.

They are super sexy yet I think I'm realising knee or calf boots just make my legs look BETTER.

This will come as no surprise to anyone: I have a few high heeled OTK and thigh high boots. The easiest way for me to wear them is with similar toned skinny jeans or pants (black boots with black/dark blue/charcoal pants, brown with brown/tan/deep red pants etc). I think the important thing is for them to fit well - especially when worn with skirts. That means they need to be form fitting throughout - like a really thick sock, but not so snug that your thighs bulge over the top. I find also, that staying covered up on top keeps the outfit ladylike, rather than lady of the night.

I have a pair of black, flat ones with a silver button detail running thru the side of the boot. I would wear them more if they had no detailing at all.

I also have flat, black OTK boots, although on me they just barely cover my knees! I wore them last week to the YLF NYC meetup because they're some of the most comfortable footwear I own.

If I were younger and had killer legs I'd wear them in more ways, but I stick with tucking skinny jeans into them. I think high-heeled OTK boots are more challenging to style without veering into Pretty Woman territory.

I have some and being petite, and not young, I find them hard to wear! They are flat, black leather, and the top folds back under-the-knee and that is how I have been wearing them. Except the look is quite different that way, I feel like the fourth musketeer.

I am curious to know how others have styled them.
