It has inspired me to look at those faded pieces again and consider dyeing. Mostly I retire pieces due to rips or stains but sometimes due to fading- I have a dress and merino tee that I would like to be a bit more intense in colour...

It takes the pressure off though when it is something I was going to donate anyway...

I would have cut it up for scrap or designated it a gardening only piece. I donate items but not pieces that are not good enough for me to wear so it would have been recycling.

I plan to wear it tomorrow! And yes I will be careful washing. If I can get 10 more wears out of it I will be happy.

Yay! I’m glad that worked out.

Just make sure you wash it with darks only. The colour is likely to bleed a little.

Yay- glad it worked! When I dye things I use a bucket too- and just set alarms to stir them about every 10 minutes.
The most important thing is to be sure the garment it totally wet before chucking it in the dyebath. Otherwise it can end up uneven color.

Update- I dyed yesterday. It worked really well. I did note it was actually 100 percent cotton when I checked the label - I was confused with my black shorts which feel similar.

I used hot water, Rit liquid due and salt in a bucket. Lots of agitating to keep it moving. A nice dense black now. In fact it’s even blacker than the photo.

I got inspired and superglued my sandals and cut off some sleeves on a dress. The last one is a work in progress but will make a fun change.

Yes, definitely wet the garment first.

Avicennia, I agree it’s better to agitate continuously. I usually use the washing machine. I think when dyeing an already black garment black splotching is less likely to be an issue, so I was trying to give Sal an easier option! And, yes, interesting about viscose. I’ve found I have to use a lot more dye to dye it.

Irina, I’ve had no success dyeing non-black items black. They always come out washed black. A second dye is likely to help. I’ve done this occasionally to get a deep red or a deep olive and it’s effective. You could also try using dye fixative. I’ve had mixed results with it but I usually use it if I want a saturated colour.

Is this the product that you were referring to?

Oh, maybe I can ask a question for myself here!
I dyed a linen top black last year. The initial color was pistachio. I followed the instructions and overall it worked well but the color is soft black, not deep black. Would it help if I dye it again?
Another question - I’ve read in the Gardian that there is an Australian brand that makes dye for washing machines. It’s a kind of a ball you put in a machine and it releases the dye while working But they didn’t mention the name of the brand. Anyone heard about it?

Another tip for dyeing evenly is to wet the garment thoroughly before putting it into the dye bath. Good luck!

For an even dye, I agitate continuously for 30 minutes. I’ll set my self up on the patio with a bucket and a podcast to listen to and stir away constantly. If you have a top loading washing machine you can try that, but I don’t, so I have to do it manually. Interesting in contrast to Brooklyn, I’ve found viscose easy to dye, but linen to be quite tricky.

Viscose can be dyed but in my experience it doesn’t take up the dye nearly as well as cotton, silk or linen. The other issue is that for best results you have to get the dye mix very hot and keep it hot for a while (say, half an hour). Cotton can usually handle that but viscose sometimes shrinks. Viscose usually doesn’t like being soaked.

What are the washing instructions on your jumpsuit? Does it say cold wash only? If so, there might be a shrinkage issue with hot water.

But… if you are going to discard the jumpsuit otherwise, it might be worth a try in any case. I’d just try a low key “soaking” version and see how you go. Get a bucket of hot water, put it in the laundry, add salt* and dye and then put your jumpsuit in it. Agitate the mixture every 5-10 minutes to avoid splotches. I’d use RIT liquid dye. At least one whole bottle. The more you use the more saturated the result. Leave it in there as long as you can. (It doesn’t matter that the water eventually goes cold, the first 15 minutes is the critical part.)

*It might be better to use vinegar (rather than salt) on viscose. The instructions on the bottle will give you the best advice.

I responded to @runcarlas post about hacks that I have overdyed a lot of garments. Viscose is made from plant fiber pulp — as a natural fiber it dyes well. Black dye can be tricky to work with, but given that your backup plan is discarding the garment, it is certainly worth a try.

My black jumpsuit is now quite faded. I downgraded it to very casual last year but I have only worn once at home this year. It is a thick textured viscose - I am considering dyeing it black to make it cleaner and richer again.

Any advice on this - Brooklyn you are experienced I know with lots of successs stories.

It’s low stakes as I have had lots of wear and my other choice is recycling.
