yes, 99% outlet stuff is made for the outlet (meaning lesser quality) and the other 1% may be last seasons stuff wich did not sell or didnt sell well and is discounted.

i am not a fan of outlet stores. you can see the differences ...imho

Interesting article, Anna. The Joe's jeans at the outlets are <$100, I am told.

BC and Marble - I am glad you had a positive experience.

UmmLila, that's interesting. I did't know outlet stores mixed last-season's stuff and made-for-outlet items. I am guessing that in case of the jeans, they are mostly made-for-outlet. The ones my friend bought are not marked with any specific style name (as regular jeans are) but they do come in petite sizes which is the draw for me.

I have one pair of joe flares and I love them...they did not bag out on me. I agree with UmmLila as far as outlets go.

A few years ago, my DD bought a great pair of True Religion jeans. The denim was incredibly soft.

That being said I don't think outlets in general are the deal they used to be.

I think that the stores at the outlet malls like Saks off Fifth are just selling merch that didn't previously sell.

But the ones like BR, J Crew, Coach, etc include lower quality items produced only for outlet purposes. Last year I was looking at two leopard print bags for a similar price at a Coach outlet store and the SA told me that if I was choosing I should take the one that she pointed out to me as the regular store item, and showed me the various reasons its quality was better than the outlet item (zipper closure, different straps)

I realized recently that a premium outlet mall sells Joes and True Religion jeans. Do you all have any experience with them? Specifically do they stretch out and last as long? Pricing is similar to Nordstrom Rack. Hmm...I wonder if the Rack sells marked down regular merchandise or if the denim is an outlet-version.

I know for sure that BR and Gap outlet denim is often different from the regular version. Not sure about JCrew.
