No specific area in psych I'm interested in, I just find it fascinating. Its a privilege to be able to "get inside peoples minds" in a way and hear a side of their life not many people may know about. Very sad too for some people though. I have come to feel a lot of affection for "my" patients, some of them who have been in what is supposed to be an acute unit for longer than me. I'll be sad to say goodbye to them in 2 weeks!!!!

I'm surprised to hear that surgeons there have a lot of free time. Surgery here is notorious for having to work long hours, getting called in the middle of the night etc. Plus most surgeons tend to be workaholics!!! So is O&G too!!! Are internists the same as primary care physicians there? Here they are very different. Physicians (internists) here get a lot more $$$ than GPs (PCPs) as a rule but you can still make a pretty damn good living as a GP plus you get to set your own hours a lot more.

GPs are looked down on here as inferior to most specialities (and they are a speciality here), but the reality is that 50% of med students will become GPs. I'm not averse to becoming a GP because I like the broad range of patients you deal with. ED interests me for the same reason. Spending all day just dealing with hearts or lungs would drive me batty. Maybe thats why I feel an affinity to psych too!

Anyway we'll see. Here our speciality training is different to you guys. After med school we all have to spend 2 years rotating through different areas in a hospital before you can specialise, whereas I understand you guys choose right away. Anyway this post is becoming long and rambly - sorry if I have bored you!!!

I think psychiatry is a fascinating field, too. Is there a specific area you're interested in?

It's interesting about surgeons. From what I know, and I'm only familiar with the American system, surgeons here can have more free time (and income) than other doctors, especially compared to internists (general practitioners/family doctors). Internists work very long hours and don't get paid/reimbursed very well. In contrast, the surgeons I know (neurology, orthopedic, urology, dermatology) take lots of vacations and get very good reimbursements for procedures (except gynecology - they have brutal schedules). They do work long hours, but in intervals. In general, fewer and fewer med.students are choosing primary care because it doesn't pay well. I also remember reading last year how the best and the brightest students are increasingly going into more lucrative fields like plastic surgery and otolaryngology. Eh, sorry, I'm rambling. How is it in Australia?

No worries Lena. I'm sure it will be interesting, I just know its going to be stressful!! And truly I cannot imagine myself ever becoming a surgeon. I need a life as well! Psychiatry on the other hand, is really appealing to me at the moment!!!!

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity, Tam.

Colorectal surgery sounds very interesting (I'm serious, not kidding), but I hear you on the 6am start times. Dark and cold mornings - yikes!

I have three friends who are going or went through med.school, and I'm never tired of hearing more stories.

Good luck with everything, Tam.

Anne I'll try to take photos later today - need some feedback badly!! The Target here actually had a few styles of knit dresses/tunics - all in grey/black of course. This is the only one that was 100% cotton, the others were synthetic/poly so that sold me!!

Tam - glad you got the striped top - hope we'll see photos soon. It was too short for me to wear as a dress too.

You know, I avoided knee high black boots for ages, because someone told me they had connotations. I have got over that now!

Thanks Lena! Until this year I only had one pair of true-knee high boots, but I really don't ever wear them because they have a chunky heel and I just don't wear heels. This boot length I kinda considered knee-highish, but ylf has made me realise it is a different look altogether. I still kinda like both looks too though!

Yep I'm in a hospital - I'm a first year intern i.e. SLAVE TO THE SYSTEM. At the moment I am doing psychiatry which I am loving and seriously considering as a future option. In 3 weeks we all get reallocated to different terms and I'll be doing colorectal surgery which I am kinda freaking out about. That will involve 6am starts all through winter - UGH!!!!

Tam - Had to chuckle that a patient said you look like a hooker. If I wear boots with a dress or skirt without any skin showing whatsoever, my 11 year old son tells me I look like a hooker. I don't think you look like one at all, but I can see with the tights and boots that someone could make the association. It's not because what you're wearing is inappropriate at all.

I completely sympathize on the day when you felt the outfit looked to dark. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me. It is a hazard of liking black clothes a lot, I think. I think the outfit looked okay as it was, but lighter pants or something would have been great.

My outfit posts have been few and far between lately, but here's a couple.

http://didiaskforfries.blogspo.....eek-3.html

First outfits pics are not PPL I know. I am going to have to get them taken down to make the hem a bit longer. Even then I'm not sure if they'll be long enough.

Second pants are actually TOO LONG. Wearing them with my tiny Camper brown heels fixed that though :)

Third outfit is a dress so I don't think I got PPL length wrong there. However I did get told that I looked like a hooker, so maybe the hem is too short after all!!

There'll be more posts from me on the weekend. I did some shopping at Target and need a few opinions I think!! Anne I got the black&grey striped top you tried on too - well for me it is only a top - way too shirt for me to wear as a dress!!

xx tam
