I like #27-28. I don’t like chunky shoe choices with this length of the skirt.
Can I offer a more radical option? :)
Take white button down shirt in #12, cut it to a cropped length. Leave it with a raw edge. Wear with a black sandals if available. Shoes should ground the outfit, not necessarily match a top. My two cents :)

Thanks, Helena -- a classic white shirt with a great skirt is a look I never tire of.

Kyle, I tried stretching/ warming the sandals by wearing them with socks and tried leather conditioner -- it is just the way they are cut, which is a shame, since the last (i.e. the footbed) is superb. But I will have to find something that works better. I agree that the looks with white feel more "me".

kkards, thanks! I definitely won't be wearing it with boots, no --but I am going to look for a sandal that works, for sure.

Suz this is such a cool skirt it looks great on you. I really like the ones where it's paired with a simpler top - of course me I would like the simple ones - but I feel like it allows the skirt to be the star. the one that really jumps out at me is number 12 - the structure and the simplicity of the white shirt against the texture and movement of the skirt to me is just fantastic. I agree with Lisa I like it with open shoes.

I like it best with a shorter top, and white, as in 7-8. It works well with the sandals, or something similar since these aren’t comfortable. I find the white makes it feel more like a Suz outfit and of course it’s immediately harmonious with your hair.

Oh I miss the broomstick skirts from the late 80s early 90s. Easy peasy to wear and maintain, sigh

I'm with Lisa, I think this skirt needs a shoe with a lower vamp/less foot coverage. Or more, conversely I think it would be great with a knee high boot, but that couldn’t work in the hot summer, but would help to stretch the skirt into fall

Jenni, you are right!! And I had the name wrong!! Thank you!! Though I think people around here did call them matchstick as well. But broomstick was the real name!

Brooklyn, thank you so much. I agree the proportions are better with the slightly shorter tops on the whole. And I was thinking of trying a hip scarf! I wiill do that and see if it works for me.

I liked #1 too -- it feels fun and fresh, and not just because of the white.

Cookie, you are so right about the mixed opinions, and I love it! It actually shows each person's style sensibility really clearly. It seems even the footwear gets mixed reviews -- so I guess I will keep experimenting with what I have and think about what other options there might be out there, preferably on sale!

Thank you, Bonnie! I am betting you are drawn to the print in 22. It looks like something you might enjoy wearing, too!

Debbie, I love that you chose one that no one else yet chose (29)!

Sarah -- "yoke-esque" is my word of the day. Brilliant! I think you are right about the proportions working best with the looks you have chosen. I wanted to try it all on just to see in the photos. It can be really hard to judge just by mirror alone. Really interesting point about the skirt having built-in almost-pattern with the crinkles. That is true, and along with the movement, it definitely has dynamism. In the still photos you can't really see that, so the length might seem to be dragging me down. But I'm pretty confident that in person it's much more active. Interesting that you like the outfits that add pattern too. It is always my impulse to include pattern but here I didn't find it as necessary as I usually would. I still do like some of the patterned tops with it, though.

Thank you all so much -- this is super helpful!!

Thank you Suz for answering. I think I thought the wrinkly skirts were called “broomstick” skirts, as though you could twist them around a broomstick. Ket mentioned those in a post once I feel.

That’s a stunning skirt. Very versatile.

In terms of proportions, my favourites are with the shorter, more boxy tops. So 18, 24, 26. I feel like the tops in 15 and 27 are maybe a tad too long. But I think if you wore them with a cross body bag for a bit more structure I’d probably change my view.

Like Angie, I love the closed shoes with the skirt. The lace up shoes create a nice preppy/bohemian juxtaposition. No 1 is my absolute favourite. Love.

Love the silver version. No 6.

I’m less keen on the tucked in shirt versions. A shirt or blouse tucked into skirt tends to skew a look too formal and office wear-ish to my eye, but that’s me.

I can’t remember whether you were a yay or nay for a hip scarf but this skirt would be a great candidate. Especially with a neutral top.

I really like this skirt! But the comments show that how to wear it is entirely down to personal taste.

I love it with the striped top. I am not sure I love it with the oxfords but maybe they are growing on me a bit. (I think I would like sneakers more.) I love 7 maybe most of all. I like 5 very much but maybe with the silver slingbacks instead. I very much like it with the basic white shirt but again I might change the shoes … I would love this combination with tall tan boots but maybe that’s my style, not yours. I kind of like it with the blue top but would wear brown shoes (which doesn’t seem like a thing you wear). I don’t care for the blue sandals with it altogether. The colors seem a bit strange with each other to my eye.

I am afraid I can’t really get into the looks with the boxy tops … they look to me as if your top and bottom halves are two different people. If you wanted to contrast with the prettiness of the skirt, I would do it a different way (I do like the denim jackets with it for example). But, others love these, so who am I!

Some of the tucked-in looks could also look cool with a wide belt?

Great skirt and very versatile!
You are getting varied responses here, and I think that’s a sign that it’s hard to go wrong- everyone will have their own sugar eye but I don’t think any of these looks are *bad* you know?

For my part I like it best with tops that are most but not all the way down over the yoke-esque portion of the skirt. So 1, 2, 3, 5, 24-26. I also like the tucked tops with boxy jacket over (4, 13, 14) for similar reason. Just like those proportions.

I love the texture/pattern mix (by which I mean, the texture of the skirt kinda has the dynamism of a pattern to my eye) with the florals in 5 and 10.

My initial reaction to the silver top in 7-8 was that it wasn’t my fave bc the texture was *too* similar to the skirt. But it’s growing on me especially as a dressy outfit.

You can see that my gamine eye is really drawn to dynamism! (Hopefully that’s also a reflection of what suits you…)

Thank you all for weighing in! I love the variety of responses, and what I'm gathering is that I can wear the skirt in different ways, which will appeal (or not) to different people!

Angie, thanks for clarifying -- I guess you are right -- strictly speaking, it's not a yoked skirt because it does not have the horizontal seam at the low hip, but it is stitched down vertically at the hip to the point where a horizontal line would cross in a yoked skirt. So that is called a godet? I am learning something every day -- thank you! Here's the image from the web site -- you can see how they style it there.

Jenni, the "matchstick" skirts were skirts made in a crinkly cotton fabric, even more boho in vibe than this skirt -- which in person actually can skew rather dressy. . You bought them tied in a knot! And then loosened them -- here's an image of one. They were so wrinkly you didn't have to worry about wrinkles!

And yes, they. called those Ecco sandals fisherman sandals and I am so sad they haven't worked out. I tried and tried last year but my feet kept getting little abrasions at the ankle and toe because the leather just would not soften. Does anyone know a solution for that? I liked the style, and the last works well for me, and Eccos are usually a pure win for me!

Angie, you asked about my favourites. I think I liked 24/25, the silver top ones (7/8), 1/2 (with the sweater), 12-14 and 15-16.. The red combo would be a real stretch for me, but we'll see. Alas, those Mary Janes are sitting shoes for me -- too flat for real walking. They are super comfy for short spells but then, ugh.

slimcat, I think you're right -- the skirt is best as the main attraction. I like some of the same ones you do.

bj111, thank you. Some of your faves were some of my faves, and what you say about the skirt's versatility is true, I think. In motion it's really lovely.

Dee, I knew you'd like the stripes. :) I agree about the proportions of the cream tops -- they seemed best to me, too. And yes, the skirt is maybe a bit on the long side for me, although this is how they show it on the model as well (amazingly enough!)

Star, you hit the nail on the head about the Zara shirt -- going back! You are so right -- too much of a muchness with a much much skirt!

Jonesy, thanks for weighing in! We like some of the same options best. I am going to have to do some thinking about the footwear. If those sandals were more comfy, I'd be set, but alas, not so! Unless I can figure out a way to soften them.

Laurie, thanks! (Another stripes lover.) The shoes in the first set are old Cole Haans that I stockpiled because I love them so much. In the stock image they show the skirt with a jazz shoe, and these low profile oxfords look similar to my eye.

Lisa, thanks for jumping in right away! I think you have a point about the footwear issue, though personally, I like the light oxfords with the skirt, too. But I'll do some thinking about what style of sandal might work if I can't get those D#$(@UD Eccos to soften up! I hear you the skirt being a little bit busy in its own right, too. I think plains are better with it than patterns, overall, which is a bit of a change for me!

Jaime, thank you! This is such good information! I love that each person seems to have a different set of faves.

So fun! So I like it best two ways - tucked and showing the shape of the skirt as in 8/9 and 12 AND boxy as in 27/28. A very versatile skirt! I also like the shoes in those outfits.

Well, I love the "too much sleeve" top, but I agree that it is not right with the skirt. I particularly like the simple cream sweater and sleeveless silver top with the skirt, as well as the tulip top, and I prefer them worn out and not tucked in.

First of all, Suz, I had to Google a matchstick skirt and the results were unclear. I haven’t heard that term. What were the ones you had in the 90s like?
Secondly, I am interested that your Ecco sandals are called “fisherman” sandals, as I had thought fisherman sandals always were closed toe sandals. I am sorry they are too stiff. As a sandal lover I am always sorry if they are not as comfortable as hoped.
I’m being very conservative or conventional in my favourites of these looks: the dressiest ones with the beautiful silver top, either sandals or slingbacks. And the cream Everlane top in 26- perfect length top and excellent bookending of top and sandals.

Fun skirt and lots of interesting options in styling! I love silver top in #6-7, simple striped top in #3, #17-18 with sleeveless blue top ( chambray? ), white short sleeved tops in #24-25&#26. I guess I prefer the skirt to be main attraction . I like dusty pink jacket in #4 with probably different top - solid, maybe.

(My dear, Suz. Love the skirt, and it doesn't have a yoke! It's a godet skirt with the "fit and flare" integrity of a yoke. So I understand the yoke description and similarity ;) )

SOOO fun to see LOTS of pics with the same skirt, and loads of winners too!

I echo Jonesy and Dee .

KILLER faves:# 27, 28. LOVE!!! Sooooo stinking cute!! The most unique to my eye, and out of your comfort zone in terms of palette. I like closed shoes with the skirt! WELL DONE!!!

Next KILLER Faves: #15, 16. Tapping into Japanese style. Avant-garde!

Next KILLER Faves: #7, 8. Again, I like closed shoes with the skirt! Silver is undeniably gorgeous with your hair, so I am reacting to that too :)

Next Faves: #24, 25. Those short tops with collars work really well with the sandals and very summery skirt!

Next Faves: #1, 3, 4, 10, 11,13. Both denim jackets are a flawless addition.

Which do you like best, Suz?

Proportionally and to showcase the drop waist detail, the cropped and shorter tops work well. 12-14 and 15-16 work particularly well to my eye

The ribbony feel of the Kirt beyond the drop waist is stunning. A boxy top in a complementary color as in 15 casualizes it, while a dressier top helps it go in a different direction. Surprisingly versatile.

This skirt seems a bit tricky with the yoke waistline but a boho gauzy vibe, and its a bit on the longer side too. My preference is for the proportions, shape and length of the tops in #24- 25 and # 26. To my eye, these tops look terrific and are hitting at just the right sweet spot on the skirt. I also think #6 looks really nice with the Rails top and silver sandals, but again, I tend to be pretty conventional .
ETA: Stripes in # 3 looks cute too and the oxfords or silver sandals would be my top picks.

I like #3 (cause, stripes), #6-9 (metallic, texture of top, like the various metallic shoes), #12 (surprising - structured collared shirt, but it works).

I like many of the others, too, those stood out for me. I like your shoes in the first set, too - Clarks?

My favourite tops with this skirt in no particular order are the striped tee, the basic white shirt and the br white linen shirt. I agree the Zara shirt is too much. Too much pattern and volume in one garment that does not really look like you. The pink denim jacket is a great partner. In general I prefer the tops untucked, except for the basic white shirt obviously. I prefer the Oxfords, the metallic sandals and the cream fisherman sandals.

My faves are the pairings with the boxy, structured tops (15-16, 27-28). Since the skirt feels boho to me (loose, casual, somewhat classic in that boho kind of way), pairing it with something more crisp and structured makes the most sense, to my eye. Not sure about the footwear! My favorites are the cream fisherman's sandals, but if they aren't comfy then that's a no-go. I agree with LJP that a light, streamlined shoe would work really well, given the volume and length of the skirt.

Hmm. Interesting. To my eye, the skirt's length requires a more open shoe /vamp . I like the silver options for shoes first, followed by the cream fisherman (I understand you will be replacing them) . Not a fan of the blue top/shoe combos, and the Cole Haan shoes look a little too heavy - again just my opinion .

As for a total look, the silver top/shoe ones look great, as does #4. I think the skirt has enough going on visually that stripes/florals, other patterns are too much. Again, just my opinion and eye - which is different I know.

Hi, all -- I'm a fan of yoked skirts because I like the way they keep the fullness away from the midsection. I currently own 4, one purchased in 2023, one bought last fall, and two bought this year.

ETA: I now know that I own only two yoked skirts -- to be shown in a future post! This skirt is, as Angie instructed me, a godet skirt, and the other one I have is tiered. Skirt terminology FTW.

I would like some help styling this one. It is from Massimo Dutti and it appealed to me because it reminded me of some matchstick skirts I had in the 90s, because it will travel well, because it has a lovely cotton lining (so it will be cool), and because I thought the colour work work well with my new pink denim jacket. It looks really fab in motion -- lots of swish!

They call the colour "pale pink" but in real life, it is a sort of muddy rose. Here, I've thrown it together wiith everything I could think of trying. Warning: the colours are all a bit off due to the light situation. I did my best.

Questions:

Which looks do you prefer?

Which footwear do you prefer and do you have any other suggestions? I fear the cream fisherman's sandals may have to go because the leather is just so stiff and scratchy -- I have not broken them in with a year of wear. If I have to let these go I would like to replace with another cream or white sandal of some kind.

Pics 1-4. I don't own a true sweatshirt but this is my version of the sweatshirt and skirt look. I like these options.

Pic 5: my sentimental cotton Lands End sweater (bought for my mother and kept after she died.)

Pics 6-9 with my Rails silver top, untucked and tucked. Different footwear options.

Pics 10-11 -- with a floral top from Simon's and pink jacket.

Pics 12-14 -- with a basic white shirt tucked, and oversized cropped denim jacket.

Pics 15-16 -- a blue top from Everlane. I could also tuck this.

Pics 17-18 -- denim tank.

Pics 19-21 -- with J. Crew print cotton tank -- untucked and tucked.

Pics 22-23 -- another J. Crew top, ditto.

Pics 24-25 -- linen shirt from BR.

Pic 26 -- cream Everlane top.

Pics 27-28 -- attempt at a tonal look but I don't think it works.

Thanks for looking! I didn't bother with jewellery etc. but will take advisement.

Any other styling suggestions gladly taken!
