Thanks all for your comments and for the continued kitty love. Jaime yes, cats are excellent examples for wearing what we wear with confidence! :-)

So interesting to see all the votes for #15. As mentioned I do really like that one a lot -- but was skeptical. Definitely an argument for giving unlikely seeming combinations a try and keeping an open mind!

Brooklyn, I do have a maxi cardigan, and in fact was thinking yesterday about incorporating it into an outfit with this top. My maxi cardigan is light blue -- since the top is black, my initial instinct was to pair it with darks. But now I'm starting to think about possibilities beyond that. I do think the maxi cardi would look really nice with the top and the dark blue/black plaid skirt. I'll try it!

Angie you and Brooklyn are zeroing in on the difficulty with incorporating winter skirt/dress options into my wardrobe: the weakness of my gear-heavy outerwear capsule. I have neither the short jacket that you suggest (I mean...I have a gear puffer and a bright purple rain shell, but I don't think that's what you had in mind) nor the long coat that Brooklyn mentions. Alas!

Jonesy, re the length, in the first outfit (1-3) I have the velvet top layered over a long knit silk tunic, and in 12 and 13 I'm using a heattech camisole underneath to visually extend the hem -- the top is quite cropped and therefore tricky to pair with pants; this is a trick that was suggested by the forum in a previous thread featuring another top of a similar length, so I thought I'd try it here too. In all of the other pictures, any apparent difference in the length of the top must be due to the angle of the photo.

JenniNZ, yes, lots of varied opinions indeed! I always have to tamp down my anxiety when I post threads with multiple outfits like this. I guess the lesson here is that no matter what I wear, somebody will love it and somebody will hate it, so I may as well wear what I like!

I like it especially when it is allowed to shine - as in #15. But also like the mixes in 16 and 21 and others. Cats are always elegant in their fur coats.

I like 10/11 by far the best. Proportions look good to me and the pattern mix amazing. Then I like 7-9, the one with the navy Aran cardigan and then 1-3 the first outfit like you have previously worn it. You have varied opinions from us!

#15 is my favorite, I think because I really like where the top hits your hip in that look (a pleasing boxy shape and great overall silhouette, from my POV), vs. the longer hem in some other pics (not even sure how the top adjusts its hem from higher to longer :)? Gorgeous kitties!

Outfits 1,10 and 21 float my boat. It’s probably the proportions and keeping the colour palette relatively tonal that appeals to me and l must say that the cats accessorise the outfits very well, they are just the right colours!

Woohooo! #15 all the way! The best propoertiona, to my eye. Do you have a short jacket to wear over that? It’s chilly in Seattle… ;)

I really like the first one (1-2). Oddly enough I’m also liking the colorful version in 21. I think my favorite may be 19, where a peek of the texture/print just punctuates the outfit nicely. I like the tall boots.

Ok, your cats are gorgeous scene-stealers!! Love!

Now that's out of my system-- I love the top and think it's a great type of piece to have in your closet. Open to lots of interesting stylings, as you have shown.

My favourites here, FWIW are: 10 (nice neutral pattern and textural mix), 15 (nice proportions), 16 (because, plaid and florals are my jam). I also like it in your skinnies/ boots outfits. And with the bright Fair Isle skirt because it's unexpected.

My favourites are 21 (rich, textural), 10 (great neutral pattern mix) and 15 (put on a long coat, and you are good to go).

I like 4-6 (with the long skirt) but I want to play around with the topper. I feel a longing for a more structured jacket here, but I’m aware that’s not your preference. I think a maxi cardigan might be worth a try, if you have one. Or could be a good addition for you.

First, thanks all for the kitty love! They richly deserve it. :-)

And thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts here! I appreciate all the different perspectives.

A few individual responses --
slim cat actually I was doing this outfit lab at the tail end of a 70 F day...I was sweating like a pig at some points!
ChristelJ I like that double-floral pattern mix too! Would it work with other bottoms...maybe. Both the top and that cardi are quite cropped, so it would be best with skirts, and I don't have a lot of fall/winter skirts. I do have a stretchy burgundy velvet skirt that might work well...actually that might be a better silhouette match for this top/cardi combo, and would also let that pattern mixing be the star. I'll try it!
Bonnie, oh yes I see the greenish cast in some of the pics now that you point it out! It's black for sure -- although the background reads as less saturated. Funny how that occurs!
kkards, that's a *fantastic* point about the Nordic cardi being the "reverse" of the burnout velvet. I really liked the combo too but couldn't put my finger on why. I didn't love it with the black cords for some reason...somehow the top and cords didn't play well together, the cords just felt bulky. But I would definitely try it with other bottoms, including the loose jeans/patent stompy boots.

And a few general thoughts--

*fascinating to see how many people liked/liked best #12 with the gray jeans/white boots. That was my least favorite variation by a WIDE margin. Could not get it off my body fast enough! I think there were 2 problems with that outfit, for my style: (1) too much light on the bottom (though my eye might potentially adjust); (2) I don't fancy all-neutral outfits that include a range of values for me. All dark or all light (sometimes with a small pop of *strong* value contrast) feels comfortable, but in "grayscale" outfits I just feel dull.

*I appreciate the positive response to the jeans/tall boots outfits too! I realize that silhouette is nothing new, but it's so practical for my climate and suits my body type so well that I just keep doing it. Glad it works, at least to some.

*My favorites are 3 skirt outfits:
#6 (I like the longer cardi better than the two shorter ones I tried with this skirt. The result felt very Ralph Lauren and I'm definitely having a Ralph Lauren moment. I did like the blue/white jewelry and would add that to this version.)
#15 (I was surprised by how well this worked! And good lord it was the most comfortable thing ever, pretty much.)
#21 (the pics are not doing justice to the dramatic swish of the cardi juxtaposed with the short skirt, but it's super fun to wear. And I loved the fair isle + velvet combo...very Etro, as Sloper pointed out on the other thread. Actually this makes me want to experiment with the top with more colorful pieces, including other fair isles...)

I was also surprised by how well I thought the nod to the 90s (cottagecore grunge??) in 13 worked. Would I ever choose this combo over one that is more firmly in my style wheelhouse? Remains to be seen....

Lots of great looks! My favorite is #12 with the gray jeans and sweater and then #13 and #18. I seem to like it with loose jeans. I also like it with the casual sweat-skirt - the skirt has a fun shape.

I like it most with jeans tucked into tall boots. They give the boho feel a bit of edge. My personal style preferences showing through here. Your kitties are gorgeous.

All beautiful outfits! My favorites are the ones with pants tucked into boots and a longish but not too long topper. I also like a lot # 18 and #15 - love the top with the skirt. Your cats are funny! Cats love to sleep on Mom's cozy sweaters, don't they?

Lots of good options! I like the first look with tall boots and skinny pants, #10-11 looks like easy practical outfit in NW, love #12 with grey jeans ( my favorite ) and #13 and #18 with loose fitting blue jeans ( fab layering in #18-19 ). The skirt is so cute in #21-22!
Kitties are adorable .
I think I'm jealous of your true fall weather and outfits since Bay Area had 90 degree today ( running AC now for a good sleep ).

Thanks everyone for all your styling ideas for that black burnout velvet top that we were discussing earlier this week! I had a chance to play in my closet for a while tonight and here are the results.

My apologies for the photos -- I know they are dark! Unfortunately I just don't have a great setup for outfit photos. I cranked up the exposure on some of them and also provided closeups for some -- hopefully that will help illustrate the mixes of pattern and texture.

These are more-or-less everyday or elevated-everyday outfits. I didn't really investigate markedly dressy possibilities since my lifestyle is casual. You can see that I am basically treating this top as a patterned/textured jersey, even though it is made of woven material. Lots of dark romance, some cottagecore and equestrienne, a little bit of 90s.

I really like some of these options and really don't care for others at all. I will try to keep my descriptions rather neutral as I am curious about your reactions!

1-3: This is how I've worn this piece in the past: tall boots, skinny pants (here ponte leggings, though I think I've worn it with jeans as well), layered over a silk jersey (the velvet top is quite cropped), cardi. I know the cardi looks gray in the pics -- it's a really interesting dusty lavender shade IRL.

4-5: tall boots, midaxi skirt (this is linen in an ink blue + black plaid), pattern mixed with a flowered cardi.

6: same base but with a solid black cardi with a kind of longer blazer-like cut.

7-9: same base but with a navy Aran cardi and blue/white jewelry. I have a thing for navy+black at the moment, so I was trying to milk that here.

10-11: playing with texture. with black corduroy pants, patent stompy boots, nordic patterned cardi

12: my idea here was to try to lean into the desaturated-ness of the top by pairing it with a charcoal cardi, gray jeans, and bone ankle boots

13-14: with loose jeans and a black watch plaid tunic worn open as a duster.

15: can I dress it wayyyyyy down? The olive midaxi skirt here is made of sweatshirt fleece!

16-17: double velvet: with plaid velvet pants and the same black cardi from #6.

18-20: layered under a pullover two ways: with either loose jeans and ankle boots, or skinnies and tall boots.

21-23: with a fair isle skirt, burgundy ankle boots, big black cardi for drama, amber jewelry to pick up the yellow in the skirt.

BONUS:
24: two black cats decided to be matchy-matchy with the clothes scattered on the bed.

25: tortie thought some pattern was needed!

26: ahhh magic, the clothes have been whisked away but the cats remain.

Thanks for looking! Grateful for any observations you have to share or remixes you care to suggest.
