Y'know, I think texstyle might be onto something -- I just realized after reading her comment that the jacket has a low stance (not immediately obvious to me since you're wearing it open). I find lower-stance blazers difficult. I know they're trending right now, but they always seem a little problematic on those of us with busts and/or hips. To my eye, they seem to suit straighter figures more, and even then they can look boxy. Not the easiest thing to style, but still, I think you've made this one look good. Not that it's relevant to this blazer since you've decided to let it go, but it's been helpful to think this through since I've been seeing this cut around a lot, and it's helped me pinpoint why in general the low-stance look doesn't appeal to me.

La Belle D - that would look great with the jacket, I agree, but I couldn't wear a rock/concert t-shirt with any kind of authenticity. I'd look like a sad middle -aged woman playing dress up Sigh . Such a great idea tho - thank you !

I have been meaning to come back for a week, because a thought popped into my head, about this outfit. Then things got busy and I forgot...

I haven't read any of the other comments here since I previously posted, but here is what occurred to me:

I feel like what is missing, is a cool rock tee-shirt underneath that jacket. You've got this cool-girl Debbie Harry vibe - you should see it through.

Its not a bad outfit, but i agree a softer top would help-print or lace maybe, or a longer necklace to breakup the grey. I have the same issue with blazers feeling masculine, though my hair is longer than yours. The only one i own now is lace!

For me, I feel the blazer button being so low of a stance is one of the things I find to bother me a little with the overall silhouette. It seems more near to the pelvis, instead of slightly higher, nearer to the waist. So, for me, it is actually the blazer kind of overwhelming you - as nice as it is, maybe it's just not quite the right one? I don't have a problem with the contrast or gray and I love gold jewelry with gray personally (goes with goldish tones in hair)

Lisa - remember you asked me about the Vince leather jacket? I so get this. It’s a learning curve. It’s just a smidge too far off your style. Life is too short. Ok, even a beautiful ok, is not good enough if it doesn’t make you feel great. Get some cash back and get the McQ scarf. Think what joy that would give you.

I think the blazer looks fabulous, as does the outfit, but all your analysis (and that of other fabbers) of why it's not working for you seem spot on.

I totally agree that short hair can make menswear styles read too masculine. I feel the same way. It isn't true for everyone, but often is.

If there is any doubt left in your mind (and it sounds like there is not), go back and read what you wrote "I don't want to have to work that hard" I have a similar descriptor I use for something I'm "Trying too hard to like".

And one last comment, that necklace is GORGEOUS! I want something like that. I went over to the Club Monaco site but they don't have anything like that. You have the BEST jewelry!

You know, as lovely a jacket as it is, it doesn't fill any particular need or hole, has not been easy to style , and will require buying more tops to make it work. I don't want to have to work that hard. It might just be a little too boyish for my style, and honestly - I bet I've worn it 4 times since I bought it, and never felt fab in it . Blazers are a tricky thing : the window for wearing is short, and I only wear sleeveless tops underneath ...and as you can tell from my last (also Smythe) jacket post, I have trouble with them. I think I'd rather recoup some $ I can use toward some new boots and jeans. Or a black McQueen chiffon scarf

I think the length of the top could be the issue, maybe a semi tuck.
Of course the easiest solution would be to go with a column of color and
try a white top, lol. Of course that is too limiting. The jacket is beautiful and I am hoping there is a part 2 where you try solutions.

My suggestion would be that the cami is too long for the proportions to work well. I notice that in the inspiration pic, the model has the top tucked. Maybe replace the top with a shorter one since you don't like to tuck?

Lisa, I agree with comments above: this look, although you have executed it perfectly, is too severe/masculine for your shape, too RATE for your personality, and too high contrast for your colouring.

And I think hairstyle is a big part of it too. I have more Yang (Flamboyant Natural by Kibbe categories) and I love this ensemble, but my long hair brings the feminine element back in. (When it was long enough to wear up, that was too severe with pants and only worked with skirts.) When my daughter lost her long wavy locks and shaved her head, it absolutely changed how she dressed, because different things and combinations were flattering.

For alternative inspiration to wear with your white jeans, have you seen the new Mamma Mia movie? The young woman character, Sophie, wears three white-jeans outfits on the first three days. Each is a blouse/shirt that is a little bit feminine and a little bit boho, and reminds me of your blouse with the blue stripes and embroidery. THAT is how you look stunning with white jeans.

(I really don't go to movies all the time... my sister was here for a visit so we took in some chick flicks. Anyway, Cher.)

Hi Jules. I'm not sure what your point is . I feel free to express my own opinions and thoughts on posts I write. I'm always happy to entertain opposing points of view - in fact, that's what this forum is all about !

bj1111- the hair thing is indeed interesting. I have to work at making sure I don't look too masculine because of my hair, and am always conscious of that. It's a very personal thing - isn't it?

gryffin - thanks for these ideas! You are a sweetheart for taking the time to search them out. I really am attracted to the lace, the VC, and the first one, and definitely need more tops like this in my wardrobe. Lots of food for thought here.

Angie - yes, black top and shoes might make it work, but I'm not committed to wear this jacket with white jeans . I think this experiment proved it not quite "me". Your posts are always so instructive when one takes the time to try these ideas!

La Ped - yeah, white jeans aren't the be-all and end-all for me either, although I did get a fair bit of wear out of mine this summer. But - only with flowy, boho-ish feminine tops. White pants are not in my fashion vocabulary anymore , and I am never even tempted to look at them.

cindy - you're totally right about the minimalist look not being right .

cocolion - wrong shoes and wrong top - yes. I'll stick to wearing this jacket with darker jeans, and find a prettier top to wear with it.

andiB - thanks for the reminder to look at Winners (our TJMaxx) for underpinnings and blouses. I don't typically shop there as I have no patience or ability to find things on 40 foot racks, but I know the finds can be pretty good there too.

stylefan, katerina, bijou - this high contrast issue is really intruiging , and the relationship between one's own colouring and an outfit contrast is something I need to pay more attention to. You are dead right .

sally - thank you and Brooklyn - I like the idea of that top. I veer away from them as I worry about appearing bustier than I want to, but I should revisit that.

Maybe you have a personal dislike or poison eye for the fly/crotch area of pants? I know that I do, but I would never presume to say they are unattractive on most women, especially on a forum populated by pants-wearing women. My issues are not universal.

Lisa thanks for this analysis. Objectively, it’s a great outfit, but a touch severe for what I usually see you wear.

Does anything call to you? I'd actually really like to see it with the VC top. The floral would soften the pinstripe. That might be what you are looking for. Just a thought.

I also think you look fabulous! But if you don’t prefer high contrast looks - your feelings make sense. Also, the model’s dark hair pull the dark bits in the outfit together which might be what you liked in the example.

ETA: did you try the outfit with black shoes and top? Perhaps you’d have liked that more.

Went back to look at the blog post with the inspo picture and I agree 100% with Cocolion -- lower contrast top and perhaps shoes that pick up on the colour of the blazer (although on the model the black shoes are also bookending her hair, so maybe lighter footwear is the way to go for you).

Honestly, I just have a really hard time with white jeans/pants in general, and have never found them to be wardrobe workhorses for me the way they are for Angie and many others on the forum...

I don't think it's "blah". I think it's "dressing like an architect" or minimalist or something, which resonates with me but may not with you. I love this look on you, but if you don't like it, maybe try a higher contrast top with that blazer (which is a great jacket!), or a print?

I too really love blazers, they just crisp up an outfit, don’t they? And I completely agree that softer not fitted blouses that come to at least hip bones are the best underneath. I’m about your age and find I want some flow over my tummy these days. I also find those blouses hard to find. I’m always on the look out and have collected a few nice ones. Problem these days is these trendy sleeves that are often too voluminous to sit right under the jacket... arg. I just found a nearly perfect sleeveless and flowy subtle floral (navy background with burgundy and taupe pattern) that will be foundation of my outfit at huge conference my organization runs every year where I am front and center on stage in front of 750 attendees. No outfit anxiety here! Don’t have find because I got at tj maxx in their designer section. I have found a good handful of good on me blouses in that TJ section

Well I think you look great, and wow those white GF jeans are perfect on you.

Like others have said, to me the top is a bit dark compared to the inspiration which is lighter/cooler and lower contrast with the white jeans than your top.

I'm a bit torn about the footwear because I love the silver mules but at the same time am craving something that matches the black blazer. Black sunglasses might work if black loafers fail.

Huh. Well, I’m inclined to agree with you, lisap. I like the outfit, but I don’t find it very you. I find the materials to be a mismatch, which is fine if one is RATE, but I think you are more polished. Also, agree re more femininity, more flourish or more flowiness would be more you.

Gorgeous blazer Lisa! I am a big fan of Smythe too. Just waiting for the right one to come along.
You always look well dressed to my eye. I do find, as you and others have said, that high contrast outfits work better on people with high contrast colouring. I would also find white jeans so white. They are very popular on the forum.
I wonder how faded or pale blue jeans would look with the blazer. Or a light blue tank and light blue sandals.
