All of your input has just been fantastic. It made me really look hard at all the options I tried and totally helped me understand why some work and some don't! Now I'm thinking I should have really thought all of this through before I bought the pants. Which is a great lesson for me to learn! haha. But seriously, had I really considered which shoes I would wear and why.....I might not have bought them because of the zippers.

THIS is why YLF is such a great place!

I love the color scheme of the camel with the ivory sweater - so pretty! I am really wanting to roll the pants up so that there is more skin showing at the ankle - which would give more structure to the entire outfit. IF you could roll the pants, I think that the booties would be great. I really like the sneakers with the pants - but, also want those pants to be shorter! Sorry! Also, I like the leopard pumps. Nice subtle pattern added to the outfit.

Congratulations for being the Outfit Lab guinea pig, and for showing us such a fun outfit! I couldn't say it any better than Gaylene did. It's too bad you can 't roll (the zippers probably will interfere with that) but you still have some fab options here, and I really love the animal print and then the sneakers!

Nice pants! I don't think they look too baggy. They look properly casually baggy, if that's not too convoluted a phrase. :)

I do think that the sweater works with the pants.

I'm going to join La Belle in liking the dark red pumps best. I think it's because it seems edgy to me—the outfit is casual overall, but you have the unexpected touch of the striking, very elegant heels. The necklace helps add edginess too.

I liked the Supergas just as well as the red pumps. It's just a different style, with a different vibe.

After that, I liked the animal-print pumps and the darker booties, again about equally. I had made it a rule to never wear booties with ankle pants because it shortens the leg line, but I see that if the pants are the same color as the booties, it might be OK (thanks for pointing that out, Gaylene). I'll have to give it a whirl!

This is a great lesson on the difference footwear makes. When I suggested rolling the pants cuff, I didn't notice the zippers. That's a no go.
Love the sneakers. They bring a totally different vibe...more relaxed. You've got a lot of options here.

My favorites are the SuperGas because I like the casual with casual, followed by #2 and #3. #1 is too cool toned to my eye. Note that I am not a big fan of pumps with casual pants so my poison eye is probably an influence here.

Hey! Is this the first Outfit Lab post? How cool is that.

Ok. The pants are perfect to me in that loose, modern in trend way. I like both heeled boots, but it's true they give a RATE ( rough around the edges ) vibe because it's not a dyed to match match. It's not a delicate look. I love the dark red heels because they're plain - you get polish but not too fancy; by that token, I find the leopard pumps somewhat 'overwrought.' I think the necklace with the sneakers is like the leopard pumps.

Ok. On my mobile. So keeping it curt...

First, I LOVE the fit of the pants on you! I think they look great with the sweater, too. Specifically, the sweater as styled in 1, 4, and 5 look the best to me. As for the shoes, I prefer the looks with ankle showing, though I think the first two are OK. I just think the others are better. I really like the Supergas!

Found this thread by trying out the search function to see if threads marked "outfit lab" would come up that way. And it works! Thanks for taking the lead, Angie_T.

Like Gaylene, I like the fit of these pants. Didn't see the zippers until the last shot, and I can't quite visualize how that feature works with the pumps. And no, I don't think the zipper will roll well.

Like kellygirl suggested, I'd be interested in seeing these pants worn lower with a belt. But then the ankles will change, which could change the shoe part of the equation.

So I'm no help, but I'm loving this thread. Glad I found it, and it's a pity I'll have to go through all the steps of using the search function rather than just clicking on a category. This kind of topic will really boost my learning speed, I'm sure!

I am not reading the others because that way I don't know if I am out on a limb or not. Dangerous place to be but what the heck.

I like both the pants and sweater. I like the semi-tuck and tuck in #4 and #5. The fit of the pants looks better when you can see more of them. I find the first pair of shoes a bit light and the second pair is close to the pant color. I often feel if I am too close in color it can look like an failed attempt at matching but that could be me. I find the pointy pumps a little dressy for the pants since they have a slightly slouchy vibe.

To my eye, the last pair of casual shoes with texture are the winners. Now I will hit post and then read the others.

Wow, I was scrolling down after looking at the photos, and Gaylene really distilled things nicely, so she took many words right out of my mouth!

I also like 2 and 3, and I think the sneaks are great with them too, for a casual change of pace. I think my favorite might be the pumps in #3 though! They not only pick up the warm camel-ish tone from the pants, but the addition of the black in the animal print gives a subtle bookending effect with your dark hair. I also like the way the pumps distinctly show your ankles, which makes the zippered detail and the cropped length seem especially deliberate.

Wow! When I posted on Shedev's thread "Tell me about yourself" she commented that if I ask specific questions I will get good input and man was she right! This is great feedback. And I really appreciate it.

The pants have zippers so I don't think I can roll. Can I?

And I would have NEVER thought to try the sneakers. I have to admit that I am not 100% comfortable with how to wear these. But I think they might work? However....maybe not with pearls? ha. Idk. I need to push myself into this look of sneakers with things other than shorts and weekend wear.

Thanks for posting this outfit because it has really helped crystallize a couple of thoughts in my mind regarding how I'm going to wear this kind of ankle-length, casual pant. Here are the guidelines I'm going to follow for my outfits after seeing your examples:

Ankle pants look good with some skin showing at the bottom; that's why pumps and ballet-style or loafer flats work. Showing skin focuses attention on the ankle area.

If the foot and ankle is covered, continuing the color of the pant is flattering because it lengthens the leg line. Wearing a contrasting color is trickier. It probably works best if the color of the closed shoe is bookended somewhere else in the outfit or by the person's hair.

Rolling the pant leg is a trick you can use to show some skin. It probably takes some fiddling and you might have to go with something that is just flattering enough. It's worth trying if the shoe covers most of the foot but doesn't match the pant or isn't obviously bookending, like your nude bootie.

Unless you are deliberately going for a dressy shoe/casual bottom look (like a youthful blogger wearing ripped denim shorts and sequined stilettos?), it's safer to match a casual pant with a chunkier, or more casual, shoe.

Leopard, and probably other animal prints, are versatile because they can look casual, or dressy, depending on what is happening in the rest of the outfit.

That's what I learned from this Outfit Lab. Note that my guidelines will work for ME, but might not be applicable to you, or other fabbers.

And, by the way, I think the fit of those casual pants is perfect--not too tight or too loose. Same for the sweater. Modern, a bit slouchy, and very flattering. You don't have to consider that a compliment, because that's just my analytical, cool-headed observation.

I'm no expert at this, but I'll give it a go...
I like the booties in 2 because they are close to the pant color so they lengthen the leg line. A pendant necklace would also be nice.
My next favorite is the leopard print heels. Maybe try rolling the pants a time or two to make them more ankle length? With looser pants, I like to roll because it adds to the casual vibe. The heels are a nice counterpoint to that.
I like the sweater. I think the contrast in your outfit matches your color contrast which is a good thing.

Gosh after looking at these photos again I can see that the trousers look very baggy on me! This is after a full day's wear so they have stretched. But I don't think I could go down in size.

I just got these camel trousers on sale at BR and I really love the color and hope they are a good fall transitional piece. I also like this sweater with them (I think), but can't quite figure out if it works or what shoes to pair.

I hope by calling out Outfit Lab in my title I can get some solid feedback. I'm relatively new to posting so if it is helpful to know more about me, I posted some feedback here
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....st-1334347

#1 - My first reflex is to reach for what has been my workhorse shoe of the summer. A nude, chunky heeled bootie. But it seems like the color doesn't flow with the rest of the outfit.

#2 - These booties are slightly darker. Better?

#3 - Tried these leopard pumps because I felt like a little more weight (thru color) may be needed at the bottom.

#4 - These are the pumps I posted about this weekend asking whether to keep or purge. I really love them although they are pretty high. Not sure if they work with this, or if another dark shoe might work better.

I know this seems like a lot of angst over a single pair of pants! But I appreciate any advice you can pass on. And I guess I should ask....do the pants and sweater work together?

ETA Superga sneakers suggested by Kiwigal.
