Thank you all for input!
I wore # 8 and felt just right. And I didn’t buy anything new in a rush! The sturdy footwear was good because we did walk a good ways to restaurant and there had been light rain. I know I can wear the pumps on other more sedentary occasions to add a bit more dressiness and structure. One younger guest wore heels and managed well but did struggle a bit with the cobbles and bricks of the downtown district hike. 2 other lady guests wore jacket over column of black!
It was good for me to work on outfit creation aimed at specific kinds of gatherings. When I have another bit of time I’ll take another go with more items and mixing it up for different vibes and moods.

I love outfits #2 & #4! (The shirt underneath the sweater & the vest with the long necklace). Definitely prefer outfit #2 with the blush bag to look a bit more 'party' appropriate.

I feel like #3 (the vest with the shirt) may look a little too workwear with solid boots - I would either swap it for the heels in outfit #2 or wear it with a long column like a black dress/ skirt & tights instead (but I don't know your style, & whether you like skirts or not).

Another thing that may work (depending on your style) could be to pop your shirt collars up & wear them with a necklace inside the collar. That way, you can add some interesting texture or shine around your face whilst still being covered up for the cold. Thoughts?

I love the second outfit. The contrast between the cozy sweater and the polished pumps nails that “I’m dressed up but not dressed up” vibe for me. I think it looks fab with the taupe bag.

Thank you jussie!
JenniNZ, I like the vest with the necklace too!
Angie asked for unzipped vest pics. At work I wear a lab coat, so if vest is unzipped, it just about disappears. Plus then it requires certain top/ pant combos. But for standing around. I like it unzipped, hand in a pocket, looks relaxed but still some structure.

rachylou, thanks for link; I had missed that!
kkards, I agree about a bit of metallic! I’ve have such items in past. Right now I have only one short sleeved knit metallic top. It’s from Zara and I git it because it’s more of a pewter and not too shiny and layers. Not sure if I can do for winter, though keeping jacket on is what I intend. I thought about the skirts but I’m thinking they’re just a bit too much for this event. But I need to step out with them soon!
Cat, the column of color is a great idea and one that can help my mix& match look more polished. I can often do black if the topper is lighter.

Ooh, now I’m looking forward to doing some outfit creation even if not for this! I need to explore and re- mix things because I’m sure I’ve got options !

I suggest a column of colour (pants & top) plus a long topper (i.e. a slim coatigan). Let either the column or the topper be a non-neutral (i.e. a jewel tone). Add a chunky pendant necklace and chic booties.

i keep a sweater with metalic threads for just such occasions...it lends a "party" feel but is one of those chameleon items that looks dressed up or casual depending on what others are wearing....i bought it about 10 years ago and i tend to wear it about once a year....but i haven't gotten rid of it becuase when i need it, there it is....
sorry i know this won't actually help you....
did you keep the silver pleated skirt? i think the skirt --(and how you styled it in the 1st picture in your post about it.)..would be perfect for this...or that tulle skirt --love it with the blush sweater....IMO both of those outfits are the kind that work for occasions like this....

I agree with rachylou, check out that link as it covers this event. I would aim for a nice jacket and a statement necklace or scarf and would not hesitate to wear heels. I would aim for ‘business’ with a twist of pretty (bling, soft, color). You could also wear a church appropriate dress or skirt/blouse combination. I look forward to you sharing some combinations for discussion.

Thank you for the suggestions!
Aurore , that outfit is not warm enough but you’ve hit on some clues I think regarding “ color” and the more fitted look. I have also been considering one of my few tuck- in-able pants which allow for possibly dressier blouse look. Some things I would still have to layer under.Funny, a dressy or heeled shoe often elevates (!) an outfit but heels may not be right for this crowd.

I generally think that light-colored blazers have a less "workwear" look that dark ones and may be great for such events.

Maybe an outfit like the 2nd one you posted on this WIW thread would be nice : the shoes are classy (if they are suitable to the weather were you live...), so is the white blazer, and the overall look is very polished.
https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....gies-shoes

A colorful special top or jacket with black ( or your favorite neutral) trousers sounds good. This is not the time to wear expensive jewelry or scarves or anything obviously pricey because organizers will expect a hefty donation. Tell DH to leave the Rolex at home.

DH and are invited to an evening “ event” related to , probably, fundraising and similar support for an institution of higher learning & related to our church. It starts out in someone’s home and then moves to a restaurant. Not sure how many guests but assume a smallish group and intended to be more intimate & relaxed . I do not have a dress code report but expect it to be “casual “ in the sense of, not a community gala event, not cocktail attire, not even dresses likely.

We might not even go due to potential schedule conflicts but I started thinking about “ what to wear” and trying on a few things and found myself unexpectedly coming up short of what I’ve imagined in my tiny mind. Something “ dressy smart casual- no jeans with a twist of elegance and for evening “. So you know, not “ trying too hard”. It’s winter but we may have better weather around that time 50’s F maybe, , but for me I still need to feel cozy.
I would wear pants ( not jeans) and would want a topper or 3rd piece. Somehow I’m having trouble with trying to avoid too dressy outfits that are more “ party” vs too “ workwear” or daytime looks. My blazers and jackets look too work- like, not fitted or special enough, and my cardigans too ordinary. Might consider the EF vest but not sure.
I’ll try to show some “contenders” and “ what does this outfit need” when I have time. I may start with one or 2 best black pants options and build upward.
I find myself annoyed that I’m having the “ lot of clothes and nothing to wear” feeling, which may emphasize I have too many basics and not enough statement items, but I ought to be able to come up with something! Maybe items I hadn’t combined before, to juxtapose dressy with relaxed. Or with jewelry.

ETA: Here are some outfit tries. I first tried various blazers and jackets and could not get the look I wanted--too business-like or something.

#1: very dark photo but is a lace-over-beige peplum top with pants and a slightly fitted cardigan, and Munro boots. The boots are for warmth and to casualize the lace top. This is a DARK outfit though better IRL. I have to have both an underlayer and the sweater to wear this in winter, otherwise could wear the top alone.

#2-5 is black BR ruffle neck shirt tucked into lightweight Trouve pleated pants belted with sweater over. A semi-tuck is almost too "studied" for this situation but it sort of semi-hangs up on its own with belt. Bernard low block heel pumps are to dress up/juxtapose the sweater but I have to wear footless warm tights + nude-for -me kneehighs in cold weather. Shown with 2 shoulder bags; love my Sorel blush/burgundy but it's not a great contrast with the taupey sweater; magenta is very casual. I like this outfit and wore a version to work with loafers.

# 6-8 is EF vest and Theory tuxedo pants with boots. 6-7 with BR ruffle collar shirt untucked, and 8 with a round neck black top which allows me to wear shiny necklace to liven it up.

I do like the dressy pumps and the weather's warmed from 15 degress to 50, and it's mostly sitting/standing, but they are a bit marginal for me in winter and maybe a bit dressy for the group, though I don't know. The boots are, I think, "safe", not too precious, warm and good for possibly having to park a few blocks from destinations.

Both pants have zips at hems. The Trouve pants are shorter and can work with pumps or boots, but are rayon and need more underlayer. The Theory I had hemmed but left a half-inch below zipper end, to wear with higher heels for dressy event, but that makes them really too long, too much scrunch, for lower heels. I may get them re-hemmed to remove that last bit. I can hike up the waist a bit to shorten them also.

I have a favorite but would love to hear your thoughts! I would like more color; I do have a bright lilac Talbots cardi-jacket and some options for it, but maybe too much trouble for tonight.
