What ClaraT said. We had a family portrait done last year and the people gave us some suggestions. You want the photo to focus on your faces, not your clothes. I would try for a timeless look. They suggested darker clothes, solids, avoid a lot of white. Their favorite colors: black, navy, forest green, and burgundy red.

Don't worry about the background. Most studios have several backgrounds to choose from.

When we have had photos done professionally, the suggestions we were given were solid colors and no white shoes.

For photos I would go with a 3 color theme but pick a brighter accent color for you and your boy.

For example, you have brown boots and blue jeans. Dress boy in a brown or tan pant to match your boot or put him in a jacket with brown or tan. Dress him in a shirt with blue to match your jean....maybe a blue and red plaid and pick up the red in your blouse......

For our family photos we chose a black red and blue combo....primarily black with cranberry and dark blue accents in different plaid shirts. Turned out very nice.

I think they key is to go together without being too match match. Neutral with a bit of color what ever color you choose.

My recommendation is go dark and go classic. A dark top for you + a black polo for him takes the emphasis away from your clothes so your faces, not your clothes, are the focus. And yes, a dark color would be fine--you do want to flatter your complexion (but you want the end result to be a photo of you and your son, not a photo of your clothes, if you know what I mean).

If you prefer the 'light and airy' look--go white/very light for both, keeping the styles classic.

Depends what colours look good on you! Do you know what colour the background is going to be?

My 4-year old son and I are having our pictures done this week. I need help coordinating outfits (not matching). I plan to wear skinny jeans and cognac riding boots, but I'm having a hard time finding a color top. I'd like to find a long cardigan and wear a tank under it....and suggestions on colors? Thanks!
