Woman your young and great figure go have fun. I love a colors tight under lace tights so funky and fun. Your generation understand the power of self. Never loose that hold onto it dearly. Glad you had a great time. You deserve it. Never let the voice of others drown out your voice.

Thanks everyone for all the valuable feedback!

Joy mentioned the "sit down and bend over test". I did exactly that with this dress and I decided to play it safe and try to have fun with it as well. Instead of just wearing stockings, I actually wore a pair of tights over stockings. When I saw the really cool colour it created, I loved it and went with it.

I am part of a group of scientists / marine biologists. We are a young energetic group that works hard but after work, we girls like to go out and have a good tie together. Maybe it's a German thing? I understand that we need to look professional at work to be taken seriously but after work, when it is just girls night out, we like to let off steam. Good times don't stop after undergrad :)

Ledonna, I love your dance moves!!!

Amy, thank you very much for those informative links. It is very interesting how stereotypes can stick to people based on appearance.

I second Ladonna. Be who you are. You have an enviable figure and totally rock a tall boot. If you want to wear the smokey eye, cold shoulders, and boots, go ahead. If you want to go a little more conservative, colored leggings and your heeled boots will carry the same vibe. How conservative are your scientist peers? Are they people who know you well, or are you just meeting them? Even though this is a party, they will need to see you as professional in the future.

You have a beautiful figure and I love the color combo but......a mini skirt over the tights would cover up the lingerie portion of the opaque tights. Like some of the others, I just find the shorts part of the tights a little distracting--I don't even like to see camis grinning under shear tops--the line breaks the flow of the outfit. Camis must be the same color as the bottoms or I find another outfit. Sorry, I guess we are back to the debate of leggings versus tights.

You wear super-high stiletto boots and micro-minis to professional events in the scientific community and now you want to tone it down for a party where it would be absolutely appropriate? Supposedly because of some online feedback? None of this makes sense to me. Sorry, it just doesn't.

I think the lady who wrote the Elle article is dead on - and it doesn't only apply to women. Serious men are also supposed to be very...dull of dress.

Amusingly, I used to get grief when I went to my dad's home country because I didn't wear high spike heels and tight dresses to go do things like get my nails painted...yes, I came with unvarnished nails. Lol. My dad and uncles would do things like wear ascots...lol!

Laura, whilst your outfit looks good, I've not really been able to work out what your friends mean. I really like the idea of smoky eyes and boots, bling etc and it seems perfect for a DJ

I think you should ask your friends to dress with smoky eyes, exposed shoulders, bling etc!

Laura, I don't think you have an ounce of bookworm in you when it comes to fashion. You've got Diva style, with a side helping of sweet. I think you should add a blingy belt and run with it, full tilt. And remember, a spike heel thru the foot is a good weapon (a diva should always be ready to cat fight )

If you're sensing some hesitancy in a few comments about some aspects of a few of the outfits you've posted, you might be interested in this article, by a Nigerian woman who went to study in the U.S.
http://www.elle.com/fashion/pe.....i-adichie/
She was taken aback to find that, "Women who wanted to be taken seriously were supposed to substantiate their seriousness with a studied indifference to appearance." She goes on to write about finding ways to defy this while continuing to be taken seriously.

You've written that you're a scientist, so you're getting more conservative feedback here than you would if you'd identified as a marketing consultant or a hospitality organizer.

If you're from southern or eastern Europe, you might be experiencing some fashion-related cultural differences in northern Europe, where local women (especially those in STEM fields) generally favor less variety and higher quality. This doesn't make them right, just different than what you might be used to.

For this kind of party, I'd think you could work a smokey eye, bare shoulders, boots, and plenty of bling, if you wanted. Really, as Ledonna said, wear whatever you like and be true to yourself!

ETA: here's another article that might help explain where cautious comments might be coming from:

I had a chance to read many of your post and also the feedback from other YLF family. You have a particular style that is quite steam punk to me. I like it and from what I read many here love it also and have been very positive with feedback.

My advice is to continue to wear and celebrate you wherever you are.

The way the shorts part of the tights is showing, is not my cuppa. Unless showing this part of tights is now a thing? (Like showing underwear or lingerie?) Other than that, this is indeed a suitable outfit for a party. A comfortable but fitted dress, tights and dressy footwear. I'd probably take off the high heels as soon as I got to the party, but I'm an old lady.

And as for the smoky eye, a party is a fun place to wear it! Not sure why you have quit wearing it based on YLF feedback, that makes me kind of sad. I would say, a smoky eye is a gorgeous thing, just pick the right time and place. For example, you wouldn't wear it hiking. ;-)

Hope you have a great time keeping people moving to the music!

Depends on how long you will be standing. Will you be comfortable djing like that? Will you be behind a booth? No one will be able to see your pretty tights. Is that the look your going for good girl? I like the green tights I would do a different shoe a boot really but, you said no boots. What about a Mary Jane shoe?

Listen to your hearbeat. What does the rythem tell you? HOUSE is the grandfather of Electronic music. This is what I wear when I HOUSE.

Electronic eurobeat party. My friend and I are going to take turns DJing and while this outfit isn't one that is optimal for black lights, I thought I would try putting together a "good girl" outfit as I have gotten a lot of advice here that my outfits were too edgy. I'm taking advice I have gotten from people here including

- no smoky eyes

- no more bare shoulders

- no boots

- not too much bling bling

A simple dress with bold green tights. Is this good for spinning electronic eurobeat music for a small group (12) of scientist friends?
