Your post really resonated with me (WFH mom, lamenting the opportunity to dress up at a job in the city, fellow overthinker). You make a simple outfit really sing! And you look really happy and confident.

Congrats on having a great formula that works, and for not letting your questioning and thinking get stuck in analysis paralysis.

@torontogirl: Haha! As someone who formerly worked in the tech industry, I LOVE the software analogy! But I’m so glad you found a way to work through this and reached out to the Fab community for support! It has been at least 3-4 years since I’ve been active in forums, and I remember how amazing this community has been for myself and for everyone else who is looking to refine their style.

And thanks for the reminder about questioning. Now that I’ve come back to the forum, I think I may just do that more often

So happy that this journey has been so fruitful for you!

Carla, I'll bring the camambert and prosciutto! :D

MsLuna, basically, I've just repeated and re-learned the same lessons on here so often that I've annoyed everyone and am embarrassed to continue doing so Just kidding; everyone has been more than kind to me always, although I do admit to being a bit embarrassed when I find I am learning the same lesson AGAIN!

I wish I had some good advice for you - I've come to accept that this is part of the pre-load software I came with - I can choose how to use it, but I can't really uninstall it. So I just try my best to be aware of it, hold it lightly, laugh at my foibles, thank those whose patience keeps me going, and forge ahead as best I can. A healthy dose of self-compassion goes a long way. Accept mistakes - better yet, celebrate them as evidence of movement, which is the best balm for overthinking. And remember questioning is NOT a bad thing - the world suffers from a overabundance of people who won't question their beliefs, so we add something valuable with our questioning and doubt. But continuing to do, even when the mind spins, keeps a lady from getting too stuck. Hope that helps xx

It made me laugh a bit when you said “downtown Toronto Girl”. I still get self-conscious that I don’t dress like one too despite living and working very close to downtown.

That said, I’m glad you found your axiom/uniform. It’s very polished and you seemed relaxed/confident/happy. Why fix a formula when it works, right?

You also mentioned “overthinking” (which I do on a regular basis). How do you deal with this when working on your style axiom? I know - loaded question but as a fellow over thinker, I’d love to see how you work with it. I’m working towards my own “axiom” (yaaay, learned a word today) myself but I’m often second-guessing myself!

Gryffin, you are the sweetest and best, and are kind and patient with me BEYOND. This year is the year of 'fulfill' - not ruminating about it, just living it out. I promise I will live my simple style this year with confidence and happiness. If I stumble, I shall come straight to wherever you are and you can give me the good shaking that I definitely need lol!! xoxoxo, with great, great gratitude.

Wow, wisdom in your follow-up comment of self-care maintenance when in need of a style boost! I can relate as I am also a WFHM (is that an acronym?) so my closet is super-casual but I decided long ago to still look put together so that I feel my best. But, for example, I spent a whole bunch of energy a few months back trying to find a new hairstyle or think about color or style change, when if I had just gone for my haircut when I needed it, I would have realized that I like my hair just fine!

TG - Honestly, I'm going to come over and shake you!! You always look wonderful. Think of the simplest most delicious plate - ripe tomatoes, fresh mozarella, basil fragrant out of the garden and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Perfect only when each ingredient is perfect and in its simplicity divine, ambrosial, decadent. That is the challenge of minimalist dressing. Best quality color, fit, proportion, ease, elegance. But "simple isn't easy!!" It's easy to hide behind pattern, detail and accessories - the simpler the outfit the more right all the elements must be to make it fabulous. You are masterful at your style. I so wish I could make you see that the way the rest of us do!!

Yes Carla! It's a whole new fashion identity when you're at home; you've nailed what it's taken me 13 years to work out lol.

I'm actually experimenting with some buying limitations this year, NOT for moral reasons but to push myself to turn first to self-care and maintenance when I'm feeling in need of a style boost - as Angie says, hair, makeup and glasses (which I will need this year) - I'm sure many a bad impulse purchase of mine could have been avoided by taking the time to book an overdue haircut or manicure (or just taking the time to style my hair and swipe on a fresh coat of lippie)!

Ha! I'm getting my retirement wardrobe ideas from the YLF MOTGs and Work From Home women, so this has resonance. With a far smaller wardrobe to maintain, my fashion budget is going towards better quality garments and personal maintenance!

Oh dear Karen!! I do have one strict rule I abide by - never make any major fashion decisions and self-judgments (or at least don't take them too seriously) in January. It's the WORST month for depressing, cold weather, the gray skies have taken their toll on my mood, and spring is still nowhere in sight ... frankly I could live in jammies and sweatpants for the whole month if I let myself lol! Hope you've managed to dig yourself out!

Well, predictably, I LOVE this, and am so flattered and touched to have contributed to these excellent insights of yours.

Pondering my own axiom further, I think there is an element of time that is not a visible part of my outfit but nevertheless important to how I feel. That is, all of this has to happen before about 10 am. (Especially during busy times, it's all too tempting for me to just dive right into work while still in pajamas or loungewear.)

The nice aspect of this is that it provides extra motivation to exercise -- if I go to the pool in the morning, I'm already showered and have dried my hair, and then it's just a matter of putting on the outfit I've (hopefully) planned ahead of time!

You look polished and lovely!
When I was a stay at home mom my uniform was leggings , ballet flats and an over sized jacket or sweater . In the summer it was all about longer flowey skirts . Of course that was the early eighties and never without shoulder pads then

Sarah's post really got me thinking, especially with her comment about finding "the simplest possible outfit that will make me feel polished when working at home".

I think part of the reason I lost confidence in my style over the years has to do with my lifestyle - being a stay-home/work-from-home Mom, I just don't have the opportunity to dress up the way I did when I formed my style as a true downtown "Torontogirl". At the same time though, I'm not the type to 'dress up' to stay home - I like dressing for my real life, I'm more productive and active this way, and I invest the right amount of time and money when I dress for the life I have. It just doesn't always result in the most interesting WIWs, which can be hard on the ego at times! (especially when surrounded - gratefully and with joy of course - by the fab and the fabber!!)

Thus, I am inspired by Sarah to own my 'outfit axiom' - I guess a uniform really, but with a twist in how I understand it - an axiom being "

statement that is taken to be true, to serve as a premise or starting point for further reasoning and arguments." So an outfit axiom is an outfit taken to be correct (for me) - per Sarah's 'simplest possible that makes me feel polished', but which can then serve as the foundation to take on further styling and detail, as life demands.

My outfit axiom is: tailored fine-knit sweater or striped tee+polished jean+belt+black boot(winter)+studs/hoops+simple necklace+everyday jewellery (wedding ring, watch, delicate bracelet)+blowdried hair(straightened or curled)+mascara+rosy lippie. I'm setting this as the bar, where previously I've been hard on myself and seen this as coming up short.

Over-thinking cap still on; one can't change completely! Thanks for reading, and love for you to share your outfit axiom(s) if you have them! xx
