This is great and I love your hat. I dislike being cold but fortunately, in the Bay Area, I rarely have to deal with it unless we go to the snow. Like anything, I'm sure this requires a lot of trial and error. I love the idea of tights with a wind panel--who knew! I struggle with my outdoor gear for cold mornings and evenings when I walk--throw in snow and I don't know if I could cope!

I have been living in base layers for almost a month and will likely need to replace some much loved pieces before next winter! Thank you for the breakdown of ones that work for you.

Your gear reviews are really interesting. We go birding a lot, and clothes can make or break an outing. No bad weather, just bad clothes.

I love my Patagonia long underwear. I have several pairs. I wore the lightest for cross country skiing, and the heaviest (expedition weight) for downhill skiing and birding in Barrow, Alaska. I bought the middle weight pair in Friday Harbor, Washington, years ago, after freezing on a whale watching trip. I wore them just this week while birding at Lake Tahoe. The quality is excellent.

Rachylou the wind proof inset is great when you need extra bit don’t want the bulk of snow pants.
La Ped - agreed on the gear being top this year. I anticipate we will be in a lockdown here for several more months.
‘Style Fan - today was a real test for me at -20. Gear matters lol
RunCarla- yes to using your custom masks for outdoor walking!
my Merlot hat is from last year as Reitmans. I checked and they don’t have any. However topshop at The Bay has a nice looking one which maybe fab with your new coat.

Great gear! MEC is a good place to find outdoor hiking clothes. Today wasn't so cold, but we do have a lot of snow in Muskoka.

I'm loving your gear round-ups! Patagonia does make great baselayers. MEC is one of the things I miss about Canada -- better than REI.

I've just started making custom Finds too, and finally figuring out how to use Collections after hanging out here for, what, five years? Like you, I started with gear. It's the most important category, especially this year.

LOL! DS#1 wears a mask for his walk home from work! Says it keeps his face warm, and isn’t itchy like a scarf! We’ve had cold weather, but Hardly any snow!!

Who made your merlot hat in your last thread? https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....lking-gear

Isn’t the Finds feature great? I put my entire wardrobe into Finds over the Christmas holidays.

Outdoor gear - part two - the base layers.

For the bottoms I have three levels.
Mild - I use fleece tights which I found at costco a few years ago. I think you can get them in many places.
Moderate - I use smartwool thermal under tights. Mine are both from Mountain Equipment Coop and they have similar ones at REI. My tights have a front panel which is wind proof.
Extreme - Snow pants. Mine are Sunice and have 4 way stretch. They have a fused fleece lining. They are quite thin and very forgiving.

Tops:
I use two levels
Mild to moderate - smartwool baselayer. Mine is from Mountain Equipment coop.
Moderate to extreme - Patagonia thermal midweight. I can't say enough about how great this layer is.

I want to also mention that I purchased Paradox thermal baselayers from Costco a few years ago - tops and bottoms. They perform just as well as the Smartwool.

I think I may have finally figured out how to use finds!! hahaha.

Also today was pretty cold and so used my RunCarla Mask as a baselayer to keep my teeth from freezing and falling out.
