What Rachylou said. S/S runway featured versions of low/flat versions of simply strapped sandals. Birk's were in evidence, as were spongy looking 'flat-forms'. Gladiators Popped up, too. Styling in the mags and catalogues - same. Oxfords and slip on athletic shoes, too.

A lot of styling for S/S look foot friendly to me!

I really enjoyed reading your comments, ladies. (Thanks for the shout out, Gaylene).

There are definitely items that are more fashionable (or "trending") than others at any time, which is the reason fashion exists in the first place. And classics have to be updated too. But seasonal fads no longer exist, and mainstream trends can continue for a decade or longer, like skinnies. This was NOT the case 20 years ago. We are living in a FABULOUS fashion era actually.

Any style of check, stripes, animal patterns and polka dots are modern classics. Like all colours, they are always in style.

My sentiments echo many of what others have said - if I like something, I wear it. Period. There have been trends that I tried for a bit and let go of, but whether it was "in" or "out" wasn't what influenced my decision as much as my own opinion of the outfit or piece or whatever.

Take Birks for example, I have never really liked them. Plaid though, I love and always will.

For me, these kind of comments are more about what you might want to buy or not buy, as opposed to wear or not wear if you already own it. E.g. if I'm someone who cares about being very up-to-date, and I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about Birkenstocks, I might wait and see what the hottest trends in sandals are this spring before I buy a new pair. But if I already own a pair and like them, I'd go ahead and wear them. Same with plaid shirts.

I was at the thrift store yesterday, and I saw several of those poly knit tops with an empire waistline, in prints. Remember those? That's the kind of thing that I think of as being "truly out" at the moment. (Not that you couldn't make them work if they are an integral part of your style. If you had a boho Stevie Nicks thing going on they could work.) Plaid and Birks have barely gone from "super-trendy" to "a bit mainstream" at this point. It's kind of a sine curve or a spiral - things don't go from instantly in to instantly out anymore, they rise and fall in popularity (and have niche popularity separate from that) over years and decades, not a season or two.

Last summer I had a pair of cheap Birk knockoffs; they got worn a lot and then thrown away at the end of the season because they were already falling apart. I haven't decided whether I'm going to try to get a new pair or not. I will probably let fate (in the form of a sale) decide one way or the other.

Plaid, on the other hand, has always been in my wardrobe and always will be. I think saying plaid is 'out' is like saying stripes or out, or a certain color. It's more about what's new, not what's out, you know? Pantone doesn't say to everyone "here's the color of the year, if you ever wear anything other than marsala you are a fashion failure", because that wouldn't make any sense. Same with classic features like plaid or preppy or military influence or a certain kind of fabric or seaming. If they resonate with your own aesthetic preferences, they can always be worked into a look, whatever's trending.

"Wearing only The Very Newest Thing is important to only a small segment of the population." So true, MsMary!

I do like to see and hear about what's trending, and sometimes something will catch my eye and I will try it, but really, I wear what I love. My BF jeans are old, and I wore them cuffed with booties when everyone else was wearing long long jeans with scrunch! (Remember that? haha) And I will keep wearing them when everyone has moved on because I love them that much.

But seriously, plaid is out? That just seems like a weird thing to say. It's been in for centuries. Maybe it's no longer on the runways but it will never be out of my closet.

I resisted the plaid trend because I couldn't find anything that suited me. When I found the RL ruffled tartan plaid skirt, I instantly loved it and ordered it on the spot. I plan to wear it whether plaid is still on trend or not. As others have noted, plaid is classic.

Yay to all those in favour of individual expression. Birks are seriously good sandals and I love mine and will continue wearing them for ever. And plaid is a classic. It may not always be flavour of the month, but then you can wear it and be one less lemming on the street.
I think I recall a post of Angie's advising people to stock up on colours when your fave colours happen to be in, because some years it's hard to find what you want. So I'm thinking that a similar thing applies here - wear them if you like them.

Next thing you know, I'll take a few more months to warm up to the idea of skirted leggings, and by the time I buy a pair, they will be "out".

As for plaid, I've always been a fan of plaid pants, but not plaid tops. They somehow give a completely different vibe. But as far as I can tell, the fans of both plaid pants and plaid tops wore them long before they were deemed fashionable and will likely wear them long after the trend is over.

It is even more fun when short hair is "in" one season, and long is "in" the next!

Plaid is always "in" in my wardrobe! I don't like Birkenstocks, and I have narrow feet, so they would be hard to fit, but even if I could get them to fit, I wouldn't wear them. Although they're fine for people who do like them! ( I wore Dr. Scholl's back in the day and loved them! You used to buy them at the drugstore or pharmacy and they cost about $12. Circa 1967 or so.). One example of things I wear regardless of they're being in: longer skirts...past my knee, towards mid calf. Boot length, I guess you'd say but I don't usually wear boots...just tights and flats, may not be in but I like the way it looks and I'm comfortable. I compensate with less length, volume on top.

I couldn't care less if Birks (or plaid, for that matter) are deemed in or out. They have been worn and loved for so many years before any fashion maven decided they were hot. Same with plaid shirts. As we've said before, it's all in the "how" , and also all about what makes you happy. I'm not wearing my plaid shirts right now either - but am not worried in the slightest if they are not a trend this next fall.
And I think it depends on the source for who is saying what is "out". Most trends have been lasting more than one year, so we'll see when summer rolls around what is still in stores. The comfort of Birks is hard to resist!

Not only do I wear things after they are "out", but I continue to wear them until they come back "in". If you like it, wear it!

Do you still wear things after they are supposed to be "out"? Just read that Birkenstocks and plaid are "outs" this year. I sure am going to continue to wear my two plaid shirts as I just bought them at the end of summer, and have not been wearing them as I have been in warmer sweaters and sweatshirts these colder months.
