Angie, that's awesome that Greg is from SA. Did he grow up in Johannesburg? My husband lived in SA for about 4 years as child. He has some very fond memories of the place.

Shiny, if you had a top in the shade of pink that is prominent in your bathroom marble, what color would you wear with it? You have a great sense of style, you just need to think of that in terms of interior design--just like Ana did with her greens and corals. Without knowing the shade or hue of pink, I may be off base, but the colors that I'd play around wth to work with the pink are dark grey, midnight blue, and olive green. I'd definately go dark and deep and rich. If you go light, the pink will be too pastel.

My husband is great about my crazy painting ideas. I thought he was going to draw the line when I told him about the stripe in the dining room. But he bit his lip and he loved it. I'll have to take a picture of the room so you guys can see how striking it is. It's super modern, but the colors are classic.

Nicole, Greg is South African, but he is fairly fluent in Dutch.

Nicole, all three baths have pink marble - flloors, halfwall, and shower stalls are all in this pink marble. It sounds awful, but it's not an ugly retro pink - it's actually very pretty. People always walk into our bathroom and go "oooh, so pretty" and mean it. But it makes choosing a dramatic paint color a challenge!!! White walls seem to work best. But I'm open to suggestions!!

The kitchen has gorgeous cabinets - they go all the way up to the ceiling - but they are in this pinkish pickled color. With dark green granite counters.

That was the one thing I did not like about the house when we bought it: the pink stuff. I outgrew that color back in the 80s, with my first house (everything was in navy and rose and taupe and white). But we can't afford yet to replace, and it's all brand new so it would be such a waste to do so.

It does look nice - don't get me wrong - it just really stumps me when it comes to decorating!!!!

Not that I would want to do it all over in warmer colors: I do prefer cool colors, I also wear cooler colors too.

The other decorating challenge is that I find myself torn - I LOVE classic furniture (love mahogany furniture, for example) but I also have a big leaning towards modern styles as well.

Then there's my DH, who does not like modern furniture at all - he prefers antiques. A bit too on the fusty side for my taste. We have an antique clock on the mantel I really want to get rid of... I'd rather put an abstract painting, or some B&W photography, there instead.

I got Simple Chic as well, although, I could have picked 2 or 3 answers to some of those questions. My apartment is still in the process of being decorated. I decided to make it very nature themed, so I have tried to use all natural textures and different shades of green--dark green, olive, and citron, and cream and dark brown as my neutral. One of my walls is painted olive green, and another one is light citron. I update for summer by adding coral and bright red accents. It's funny, because I never thought about using those color combinations in clothing before coming to this site, but for decorating they seemed an obvious choice! So when Angie suggested that, it was like a light bulb went on in my head, and now those colors are part of some of my favorite outfits.

I'm married to a cyclist too. We are absolutely besotted with the Tour de France and followed the Tour by car two years in a row when we lived in France. It was INCREDIBLE.

Your house sounds beautiful Nicole and from what we could see from the pics, it looks it too. I go to lots of people’s houses in my line of work and I enjoy seeing how the taste level of their home décor is reflected in the clothing that they own and want to own. Most of the time there is a close correlation. Even if it’s latent.

I’d say our home completely reflects Greg’s and my own clothing style. We enjoy both old and new things and therefore mix contemporary furniture and artwork with Asian antiques. It’s modern AND retro just like the way we dress. The furniture is neutral but the ornaments, paintings, sculptures and walls are hectically colourful. Bright colours make me happy, so I’m always happy in our very bright house!

Shiny, the best way to add color to your walls is to start with one small room--even a bathroom. Pick a really deep color that you absolutely love, but are a little afraid of. Just tell yourself that it's one small room and if you don't like it, you can paint it eggshell again. Then let yourself adjust to the color and I guaranty that you will be picking new colors for other rooms in your house with in a few months. Color on walls is contagious.

If you really want to experiment with color, you Ben Moore's web site has a feature where you can take a pix of your room, and change the wall color using their color pallette. I love their paint and their colors.

I got "simple chic."

As far as my house, I have had the most awful time decorating it. I choke up every time I think about so much as a choosing a paint color. If I spent half as much money on decorating as I did on my house, my house would be gorgeous.

The house has great bones - it is 100 years old but completely renovated before we bought it. The furnishing is a mix of oriental rugs and really fab B&W artwork from my DH, and Ethan Allen timeless furniture that came from my first marriage - chosen when I was in my 20s and not so sure is my style anymore, but it's not horrible. Somehow, it all works okay - but none of it was planned.

I crave color but I can't decide what color to paint. I want a white sofa, but not until my teens are out of the house and stop dropping their dirty backpacks and sneaks on the furniture.

I find it much easier to commit to a blouse or jacket or pair of pants or jewelry, rather than a sofa or paint color. :-(

One of these days, I think I may hire a decorator!!

Does anyone know of any blogs similar to YLF but for decorating advice?

I’m glad everybody enjoyed the quiz. I found most of the questions easy to answer, but there were a few that none of the answers really fit me. As for Spiegel’s clothing selection, I find most of their clothes frumpy, but I’ve seen some that look beautiful. For some reason I’m particularly fond of their hand-crocheted cardigans. It’s funny, I loved something from just about every page of the first catalogue I got from them, but since then I’ve gotten many catalogues and e-mail promotions and found very little I liked at all.
I think you all are right about sense of style being expressed decorating. Nicole, your coffee table sounds great. I love photos. Right now my “house” is a one-bedroom apartment, so I can’t really decorate. The walls are white, the carpet is a hideous dingy beige and I can’t do anything about it. I do look forward to having a house to decorate when I graduate and we move out. For a long time I’ve thought about doing rooms in different themes. For instance, I have dishes in a pattern called “Italian villa” and I plan on decorating the kitchen themed around that. I also love oriental decorations and want to do a room styled around them.

Christie, I've been thinking about gathering all hubby's old gears and cranks and degreasing them and making some sculpture with them. Personally, I'm not into cycling--but being married to my husband and being around all his gearheads, has definately given me a great respect and understanding of the sport. I think there is at least one bike related item in every room of my house.

Thank you for sharing Nicole. Your house sounds great. I love the idea of the coffee table.

I have a bit of a bike fetish, too. I used to race competitively, when I was younger. Now, I just ride my fab old raleigh with the wicker basket for commuting. My one bike accessory in my house (a remnant of my by-gone race days) is my kitty, Pantani (now 12), named after one of the greatest cyclists in the history of cycling, who met an unfortunate, early demise.

I think I've put much more money and energy into decorating my home than in decorating myself. I wish I looked as good as my house!

I like things in my home to represent my family. I have this awesome coffee table that I "made" by covering the entire top with personal snapshops and photos, and covered with glass. (It was an effort to cover all the damage my son did to a fine piece of furniture!) My husband's pasion is bicycling--so I have alot of bicycle kitch around--prints of the Tour deFrance, little bicycle statues etc. Now I'm trying to find fashion accessories that act the same way on me as my accessories act in my home. My home is very colorful, my dining room is sunflower yellow with a 15 inche chocolate brown horizontal stripe going across the top half of the room. My living room is peanutbutter and ice blue. My daughter's rom is pickle green....I like to think of myself as a fun and colorful person--so I'm trying to add more fun and color into my wardrobe. So yes Christie, I do think people's senses of style go far beyond their outward appearance.

Your Signature Style is: Natural Sophistication
You have a sense of adventure in how you live and how you dress. You'd rather take one exciting trip a year than lots of little weekend getaways. You're attracted to the exotic, to things with a story, but you choose with care. You dress with subtlety, but have always loved animal prints. Sensitive to the environment, you love things that are rooted in nature, whether it's color, pattern or texture. Among your friends, you're the one who has the confidence to take risks.

Well that's me alright, word for word! Too bad I find most of it's suggestions "icky" or they remind me of my 7th grade algebra teacher's obsession with polyester.

I just did their test and this is what I got:
Your Signature Style is: Simple Chic

Simplicity is more than just your style, it's your approach to life. You firmly believe that it's better to have one perfectly beautiful piece you can wear for years than a closet full of "almosts". Quality rules in your world. The trends of the moment may interest you, but they never determine your choices. And that applies to more than just fashion. You are selective and deliberate in all your decisions. The saying "less is more" could have been written for you.

Fun, Sarah!

My style is: Understated Elegance

Taste may be acquired for most people, but you've always had it. You just know when something works. Whether it's the way you dress or the way you entertain, you're comfortable with who you are and it shows. You work quietly at doing things well and are never satisfied until you get it "right". The first question you ask when you choose something is "how well is it made?" Your friends think you're a perfectionist. Is there anything wrong with that? Not in your world.

Ok, yeah. So my friends do think I'm a perfectionist. Ha!

I took a quiz a couple of weeks ago to figure out what my signature style is. Spiegel has it on their website. This probably wouldn't work for everybody since they don't list styles like "funky" that they don't sell, but they had some signature styles listed that I hadn't thought of before. Anyway, I thought it would be interesting if some of us would take the quiz. Here's the link:

http://spiegelsignaturestyle.d.....;altemail=

I came out a "modern romantic," and the description fits me almost perfectly.

"Your home is where your heart is. And whether you're decorating or dressing, everything has to have a little extra touch of femininity. You dress to please the man in your life, as well as yourself. When you were a little girl you thought pink was the only color and it's still high up in your favorites. You don't need to be the center of attention, just the center of attention to those who matter to you. You take time to smell the roses, because you've always known what's most important in life."

Along with that I do have a bit of "artsy eclectic" in my style though, so I don't really fit into any one category. I guess in that respect personal style is sort of like body type; we all tend toward something (or two things), but most of us don't fit into one extreme or the other.

I was just writing a response to Angie's post, and it occurred to me how we express our innate senses of style in many ways. I've written before how few pieces of clothing I have (literally, I could name them here: two pairs of jeans, one pair of comfy dress slacks) six dresses (not including my wedding/cocktail dress), three long-sleeve t-shirts, six cardigan sweaters, a couple button downs, a couple of suits, maybe 5 knit shirts, and that's more or less it--no kidding). But my clothes are in multiple, and often bright, colors. I do not shy away from combining crazy colors. I suppose my aesthetic is minimalist and bright.

And if you walked into my home, that is what would strike you. I have very little furniture--most of it is simple (and used or antique), and no knickknacks whatsoever. I do not collect things. I do not have many photos or anything on display. It's pretty sparse. But the walls! I have bright golden-orange with black trim and purple velvet curtains in the living room. Grass green with black trim, a dark purple/red lampshade (with black fringe) and bamboo shades in the bedroom. Bright turquoise, white wainscoting, and black trim in the bath, and the kitchen I did in a minimalist extra-white and black (I painted the cabinets black). I have one painting on the walls, and that's in the kitchen.

Realizing this is sort of funny. I'm interested in how the rest of you define your styles and how you have expressed that in other areas of your lives?
