A bristlecone pine was planted in a nearby park for Arbor Day several years ago. It has not faced any hardship, and looks perfect, sort of like a fake Christmas tree. These trees look gnarled, I think, because they're ancient, and have experienced severe conditions at 10,000 feet.

The golden eagle took off after I took its picture. It was huge. If it got its talons in the right place, I guess it could get a deer. A young Cooper’s Hawk tried to take down our Jack Russell. There was no way it could have flown off with Bob Barker, but it certainly could have injured him. Luckily, he was zooming around the yard at the time.

Thank you for sharing your trip. A bristlecone pine was just planted in our yard by landscapers. I hope it makes it. Right now it is a very pretty little tree. We also got some other sort of Eastern European pine. I hope neither are susceptible to pine bark beetles.
I was at a it’d migration celebration last weekend. There was a golden eagle. One of the bird experts said that they will attack and take down a deer. We were hoping they would go after our huge population of prairie dogs.

Suntiger, one of the byproducts of a desert climate is a beautiful blue sky. I actually get excited when we get rain clouds.

Love your photos, thanks for sharing. We have driven ‘the loneliest road’ from Ely to Fallon and the reverse, many times, as we like to approach Cedar City, Utah, this way. There is a pretty good Shakespeare Festival in that town and we live in Seattle...not an obvious route to take but a very interesting one.

FashIntern, I think the spoonbill just flew off course. I bet you saw a lot in Florida.

Jane, golden eagles can have a wingspan as much as 79 inches (200 cm)!

Kkards, it was very strange to see the crew. Some of the “actors” were kind of obnoxious, though, leaving their bikes along the path, forcing people to walk around them.

Carla, no I don’t. Although I do have a few albums of pictures on my computer. When I was in college I worked in Glacier NP in Montana. I had two big topo maps. One I took out on the trail, the other one I marked in each trail after I hiked it. I’m not sure where either one is, unfortunately.

StyleFan, Rachy, Nancy, thank you.

The Loneliest Road in America was intended as a pejorative. But Nevada embraced the term and even has Loneliest Road signs along the way.

Do you keep track of your trips and the places you’ve been? I had an old atlas of North America and would trace my travels with a highlighter. When time wasn’t an issue, DH and I would attempt routes that were new to us. Sometimes, though, we would repeat old routes that were just plain beautiful. (When I first looked at your map, I read ‘loveliest’ not ‘loneliest’!)

Our plan was to visit Great Basin National Park. But first, there was a bird to be seen in Las Vegas. We drove 1100-1200 miles overall.

1. Roseate Spoonbill in the Las Vegas area. Poor guy is very lost.
2. Cell phone tower “disguised” as a palm tree.
3. Road runner in Las Vegas area.
4. Me in shorts, a tee and my Tilley hat at Cathedral Gorge State Park. This is the “fashion” portion of this post.
5. Cathedral Gorge SP reminds me of Cappadocia in Turkey.
6. Ward Charcoal Ovens built for the silver mining boom. The miners stripped the area of trees in the 1860s for the smelting process.
7. Who showed up but a film crew to shoot a commercial promoting travel in Nevada. There were way too many of them, and they just took over. We were about to leave, anyway.
8. Golden Eagle. These birds are HUGE!
9-10. Bristlecone Pines. These trees, growing above 10,000 feet, are among the oldest organisms living on earth. These were about 3000 years old. Fun fact: Nevada, which is largely desert, has two state trees, the bristlecone pine and the pinyon pine. We hiked six miles at over 10,000 feet, and I did fine, which was a relief. I’m not as out of shape as I thought I was.
11. I loved this sign. Someone was offended by the description of the trees’ “grotesque beauty”, and so they scratched out grotesque. I think the sign was wrong. The trees are not grotesque at all.
12. Three toed woodpeckers along the trail.
13. We stayed in a motel in Baker, just outside the park. The motel was just adequate, but the related restaurant was outstanding. For breakfast, in honor of millennials everywhere, I had avocado toast with locally grown tomatoes. Delicious!
14. View of the Loneliest Road in America. Life Magazine named that stretch of Hwy 50 in the 80s.
15. Beautiful skies
16. Map
