Oh, no! I feel for your husband. I think it would be hard to deal with this single handedly. We had one of us holding the dog and the other one working with the solution. Good thing you had a grooming appointment! Surprisingly, I don't think the dog minded the stink that much. Or maybe he just enjoyed "hunting" the skunk - not sure.

I'm out of town on business but I just spoke with my husband and our pooch got skunked last night! Hubby used tomato juice, didn't know about the peroxide- soap option. He said it's not too bad and he has an appointment at the groomer's tomorrow. I feel bad for our puppy-girl, ( she's still our puppy, even at 10 yrs old), and even worse that my husband had to deal with the whole mess!

Amy, thanks for asking. Everything is pretty much back to normal. If you stick your nose into his fur you can smell it, but just barely. Our house has stopped smelling, thank goodness! Now we're being very diligent in not letting him be out late at night. It's very difficult because he likes to be out all the time, hunting. We're also hoping it was a bad experience for the skunk and that he'll avoid our yard in the future.

We found the trick to the Natures Miracle is to massage it in really well, then let is sit for at least 10 minutes or more and let it do it's stuff before you wash it out. The longer it sits the better it works. If you can distract your pup with a kong and an on again off again massage in the tub over 20-30 minutes it definitely works! If you rinse/wash out too soon the enzyme doesn't have a chance to do its thing. And repeats definitely help, three washes is our average.

The skunk den across the street from us has a litter of baby skunks every year, and the baby skunks don't learn to control their spray until they age a bit. It's like a skunk war zone until they're three or four months old, every dog on our street is a target and we are all old pros at midnight skunk baths!

When my friend's dog and I got skunked, the smell didn't really diminish until about the third washing, when I finally spent 45 minutes working the paste into the undercoat. Oh, and that mixture dripped on concrete is SLIPPERY. The enzyme cleaners I tried did nothing.

Thanks, Angie. The stink is fainter in the house. The dog still smells, though. I cleaned the links of DH's watch with baking soda this morning. Evidently it got skunked, too. That was probably what he smelled yesterday at work.

Here he is this past weekend at an AIDS walk. He's really a sweetheart. Our other dog is on the left (he's a sweetheart, too) and my friend's dog is on the right. We wanted them to have a lot of cute dogs on the walk.

Okay, is it wrong that I laughed a little? Because look at your fierce little guy! He probably bounded over there, determined to give that intruder a piece of his mind... and SURPRISE!

My mom had a dog that was skunked, and the vet (when he finished laughing) said tomato juice helps neutralize the odor. She didn't think it helped significantly, but tried it anyway - along with dish soap, and peroxide. It's skunk, and skunk STINKS.

Let me note that she walks her dogs on leashes now. They are allowed to run around the fenced-in pool area.

I have a theory - just a theory, mind you - that skunks are territorial and use scent to mark their turf. There is one area in the woods near my mom's, that, for about a year or more, had a skunk smell about once every 2.5 weeks. I pointed this out, and now, as a general rule, she keeps the dogs away from 'Skunkland', if she starts noticing a consistent smell coming from one area.

Ceit, you are right about taste and color. I have driven my car past a fresh road-kill, and the smell gets in the back of your throat where you can taste it. I cannot begin to fathom a close-up spray. It's like Nature got a really good practical joke in on you! Sorry (Okay, I admit it. Still laughing.)

Thanks for your sympathy, fabbers. I know it happens to a lot of people, but it's still pretty unpleasant. Our house still smells, especially when you first come in. I stop noticing it after awhile, unless I go outside and come back in. I was out running errands and I think the dog must have rubbed against my car.

Emily, another thing to worry about - stinkbugs!

Ceit, how horrible! I really feel for you. My husband used the mixture on his arms where he was holding the dog. He said he could smell it at work today.

Kellygirl, JayS, Glory, Rachylou, crackers, Windchime you know how our pets make life "interesting" (and fun). My guy is very charming and cute though, which makes up for it. Crackers, I'm going to ask the vet about the enzyme you referred to, thanks!

deb, OMG!!! I knew poodles were used in hunting, but I didn't know they did the actual hunting.

AmyK, I did get to sleep, but didn't get enough. I was pretty tired today.

Thank you Kim, Suz, Shannon, pil, SarahL,

Been there! I let my dog out to "do his business" late in the evening, and as soon as he started coming back in the door I smelled the skunk smell. It's awful, isn't it? I thought it was kind of like burning rubber.

Re the house smell--someone told me to try simmering strong coffee in the crockpot and to light vanilla-scented candles. I let the crockpot with coffee simmer for a couple of days--I replenished the coffee and water as needed--the coffee smell definitely covered some of the skunk smell. I much preferred breathing in the scents of coffee and vanilla to the scent of skunk!

My poor dog got it in the face, too. It was a few weeks until I didn't notice the skunky odor in his fur. The next summer, he did it again! He's very sweet but not exactly the smartest dog that's ever lived.

Oh poor you. We have a skunk den in the woods across the street and our fur baby has been skunked at least half a dozen times. The face is the worst, it's an acid and it burns. Artificial tear eye drops from the pharmacy (human ones) help for a few days if his eyes are still red (they can go up his nose too if he's pawing at it), eyes can sting and burn for days. And baby wipes help wipe his face and snout, the smell lingers for weeks on their face and it's the hardest place to wash. We've always had the best success with the skunk specific enzyme wash, we always keep a full bottle under the sink, because it ALWAYS happens at midnight! You can also throw a capful in the laundry with your clothes and the towels, and the cushion covers and anything else you can wash cuz everything in the house stinks!

It's so prevalent in our neck of the woods that the mobile doggy wash does a de-skunking wash!!

Poor little cutie! A friend's dog was skunked once. She bathed it, showered herself and went on to work - where people could still smell the faint skunk odor on her. She was pretty embarrassed.

Well, at least you've got the potion right, no bathtubs of tomato juice. Hadn't heard about mineral oil for the eyes, hope I don't have further occasion to need it.

Were you able to get some sleep?

Oh man. I feel your pain. Lilypup's quite fond of the midnight hour in a pouring rain for a skunking. The dog does not learn.

Well he is one fierce hunter! But, super gross as I know from my 15 pound dog who got sprayed in our yard a couple of years ago, hunting and protecting. I didn't know about mineral oil in the eyes - that is a good tip.
What a night!

I feel your pain. Zeus, my 80 pound poodle, likes to kill skunks. He lunges at them, grabs it and shakes it until it's back is broken. After they die they release look all the oil and when it is full strength, there is no way to get the smell off for months. I am sure your poor guy hates his smell right now.
