I just purchased a couple of fashion sketches on Ebay to display in my new closet. It will be fun to "decorate" that space a little.
I chose sketches with gray-haired models, since I'm in the midst of transitioning from dyed to my natural (gray) hair color.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9.....620113216/

Do any of you incorporate your love of fashion into your decor literally -- for example, by displaying your clothes or accessories in your home?

I remember this topic last time but, yes style of home reflects my fashion choices. Brick, steel, wood, modern and rustic. We live in an industrial loft. We just had the original freight elevator doors that were in the building from 1900 made into a wall. Very textured and weathered- industrial and antique.

I think even though I'm a renter with almost exclusively Ikea furniture, I've been able to add my style to my house. Though it helps that it's an adorable 1920s adobe casita with arched doorways and a lot of the original cabinets, kitchen stuff, and doors. Because I'm renting I didn't paint any of the walls, and it has hardwood floors with a warm, golden tone throughout. The house itself is very classic, warm, and understated, though the arched doorways and older stuff adds some flare. It also has some great windows and gets lots of sunlight!

I further spiced it up with pops of color. Some of my ikea furniture is white or wood, but I have a couple of bookshelves and a shoe rack that I painted various shades of bright blue, a red ikea poang chair, and some red throw pillows. While green is my favorite color, I like the way blues mix and add a sense of calm in houses, so most of the pops of color in my house are blues - all of the bedding is blue colors (in an otherwise white room), and the shower curtain is a blue that looks great with the sea green tiles in the shower.

I hope that my personal style is as great as my house - I like the mix of simple and classic with bursts of color and character! I think if I had bright furniture and bright walls it would be too much to take in all at once, which is how I feel about outfits with too many colors and patterns and accessories. But I also hate outfits that are just neutrals, I think color is necessary to bring some life and excitement into the mix!

honestly, I put more effort into and derive more pleasure from decorating my house than dressing myself. If I buy a table that fits in a room, it will always fit, while my weight fluctuates and clothes stretch out through wear or shrink in the wash. And a house can look more or less the same month in month out, whereas I find it annoying and a bit intimidating trying to come up with a different outfit every day!

Overall, my house is more sophisticated than my clothes, but along the same lines. In both: lots of earth tones, mix of old and new, focus on comfort and textures rather than bright colours or cutting edge design.

As a mere renter who has moved around too many times in the last few years, I am kinda starting to long for the ability to have my own place and my own space and style and not have to keep changing. Having said that I am slowly starting to get a collection of furntire that matches my style in many ways such as my ENORMOUS red couch - so big it has to be moved in/out over balconies.

My most recent furniture investment that I just ordered 2 days ago is a bed base and mattrress (currently I am sleeping on a skanky old mattress on the floor).

Bed shopping is hard!

I don't know if I was able to find a bed that truly matched my style or not. The bed that I ordered is found here, its the "Newtown Bed Base" but I'm getting it made with the Meiquam headboard as I liked the shape of that better. The underbed storage drawers and the not having to vacuum under the bed really appeal to me.

Do you think its my style or not? Now that I've made the leap and ordered it, I'm starting to second guess myself. I also liked this bed at ikea, but worried about the quality/durability factor compared to the solid pine of the futon.

Other more tradiational beds just didn't grab me so much...after a while they just all start looking the same!

I think I should have asked you guys for advice first, as you clearly know more about decorating than me!!

I do remember this from before too. I don;t remember what I said, and no matter anyway;0
Interesting though because when I thought about it my house is decorated rather conservative(colorwise) and traditional ,but with a current updated feel...kinda like me.

I like to look nice and I like my surroundings to look nice, too. But my personal dressing style is very colorful, modern and trendy. My home decorating style is very decidedly British Colonial. While there could be some overlap (BC style tends to be more "formal" and structured, and I like very clean, structured lines in my clothing), I would say they share fewer characteristics than they have in common. It could be that I like BC style so much because my grandmother's decorating style was that way, so maybe it's what I grew up with and because of that, I am most comfortable in those surroundings. Who knows? It's fun to think about, though.

This is a great topic! We've had it few times before on the forum. To answer your question - yes! We love decorating our home and it's been finished for a while now. Nothing left to do but bring back the odd thing from our travels. Our home style is quite similar to our personal dressing styles. Retro and modern at the same time. Both colourful and neutral - and very small :0)

I love questions like this :)

As a renter who is living abroad with LOTS of Ikea stuff, my home isn't exactly what I would wish right now. That said, I really care about interior design- almost as much as I care about fashion! I think my home does reflect my own style, to an extent. Modern, clean lines, retro details and accessories, mainly neutral palette. But I probably decorate using more colour than I regularly wear- my couch has a hot pink through and I'm currently upholstering two antique chairs in a bright turquoise.

I love art a LOT, though most of my collection is at home in Canada, awaiting my return. Through my art you can see my love of typography, travel and illustration.

Oh, and my home also reflects my boyfriend's style, of course. It could never be 100% me, as with any couple there's always an element of compromise. Luckily we have very similar taste!

This is so interesting.. I lived in a new home for 10 years before really decorating, waiting so long to commit to colors, staying neutral, not knowing what accessories and such to buy. Money was a factor, but choices were so limited..then I made the plunge, found a model home I loved, and emulated the colors and style. Just painting the walls this gorgeous tan/yellow made such a difference, all of a sudden everywhere I went I saw accessories and furnishings that fit in. It mushroomed, and since then I have become the "interior design" consultant for so many friends and neighbors. Then I began to look at my wardrobe and the way I dress. It's really just the same concept, different canvas. Too much fun!

As a new participant who is here to learn, I find this a very interesting idea. I have a very definite idea about my "home style" and am currently engaged in a remodel to make it a reality
Yet, my "personal style" is -- well, non-existent.
What an intriguing concept -- to think about how our interior design preferences would translate to a wardrobe (or vice versa). Kind of like the old Domino magazine "Make this outfit into a room" features.
Meanwhile, all of your homes sound so lovely and personal!

Our house is an 1843 farmhouse furnished with antiques and traditional pieces, natural fabrics and light colors (think Gustavian design). We've been restoring it for the last 4 years and we're almost done.

My wardrobe style is classic. Like Kristine, I go through cycles when it comes to clothes and decorating...for a few months or a season or two, I'm focused on clothes and then all of a sudden I get a wild hair and I'm all about working on the house.

Yeah, I would say the two have similarities. I like clean lines, neutrals with a few bursts of color. My house was built in 1949 and I love mid-century modern. I find myself drawn to that style in clothing too, simple and clean but with interesting colors and patterns.

My house has touches of Asian influences (I was an East Asian studies major). I really love the Japanese aesthetic of earthy colors, organic textures, handmade ceramics, minimalism. I think I would like this style in clothing also, although it isn't something I've developed very much. I do have a few things vaguely Asian, kimono style sleeves or cherry blossom patterns, but not very much.

This is an interesting question. I think my house reflects my style more than wardrobe. Maybe my house can give me some clues!

I noticed when I started paying more attention to my wardrobe, decorating became a little more neglected. And when I was going crazy on the house, I wasn't dressing well. So hopefully I can find a balance one of these days!

My house is a small, cottage-y affair and so does not lend itself to sophisticated style, which is generally what I aspire to in my clothing. There is some overlap in the color schemes, though my clothing has more modern neutrals than my house.

My "new" bedroom is my current favorite place in the house. Last year, I gave over the second floor to my son (it's one large room full of alcoves and nooks) and moved to a small room on the first floor. It's painted a yellow-y cream with white trim, and has white furniture and accents of bright turquoise and a light, citrus-y green. You're so right, An -- the little accents and accessories do make all the difference.

Julie -- would you be comfortable posting a photo of your house? I'm dying to see it!

I can totally imagine you living in a coverted church Julie, I could see you in a converted barn as well!

We live in a furnished rented apartment in London so none of the furniture is ours and all the walls are white. In NZ we didn't have the opportunity to do any decoration on our house that we own as we were only there a year before we left.

I think that as I become better at organising my fashion sense and deciding on my style this is become reflected in our I am organising our apartment.

Our decorative bits are all items that we have picked up on our travels - at the moment I am looking at marble polar bears from Norway, a big bowl from Morocco, a hand blown vase from Stockholm, a wooden duck from Egypt and some wooden camels from Morocco. Oh and also my I Heart NY piggy bank!

Well I live in a converted church which is craggy on the outside and was drafty on the inside so hopefully it does not correspond to my style;)

Seriously though I have a vintage exterior with a modern interior so yes that could correlate to my style. My house is also mostly neutral with splashes of colour but this is through compromise with DH over the design.

My apartment reflects my personality to some extent. I have crazy orange leather Euro couches which many people probably wouldn't like, but I love them and they reflect my European heritage. I also have lots of bright colors and graphic art... and lots of Ikea. I decorated on the cheap and I would probably decorate differently had my financial situation been different. But for a twenty-something's first apartment, I think it works. It has a light and young feel to it.

Hm, interesting question. In a sense, my house and personal styles are similar because we have good basics and not a lot of accessories. But my house has fairly old, well-worn furniture and children's art pasted up everywhere. My clothes tend to be more recent and trendy than my interior decoration!

My house really does have a similar style to my clothing style. In regards to both I like fairly clean modern lines with natural fibers and textures, and accessories that are vintage/antique (real or inspired), or have an ethnic feel. My personal style is always evolving, but the main living areas of the house tend to stay the same once I have them done the way that I like. Of course, five years after buying this house I am still waiting to get paint up.

Just out of interest ... One of my goals for 2010 has been to work on my home decorating. We've been in our house for 10 years and have done quite a bit of renovating but I've just started to notice recently that while I've got really good basics together (e.g. longe suite, dining table and chairs etc) I'm really lacking in the 'accessories' (if I can call it that!) department of our home (e.g. artwork, lamp lighting, cushions). In some ways it the same thing I'm struggling with my clothing style. Just interested if your home style a similar style to your fashion persona? Do you put the same emphasis on your home decorating as you do on pulling your personal style together?
