In that role I did a lot of promotional writing—and this, in turn, became good material to add to my portfolio when I applied for this job. </p> <p>If I'd tried to get a paid position as a promotional writer right off the bat, I probably wouldn't have had much luck. It's not that I didn't have the skills. I did! And I even had a relevant degree. But I didn't have promotional writing experience. I wanted to chime in and say, that not only are following your passions and earning a paycheck NOT at odds, I would say that if you AREN'T engaged in your work you are likely not earning as good a paycheck as you could, because you'll never be as good at something you don't really enjoy. We invest time and energy in the things we enjoy, so if we enjoy our work we invest in that set of skills and that allows us to earn money - trading our skills which we enjoy for a paycheck of some sort. Sometimes opportunity comes from the most unlikely situations...</p> <p>Your story is so similar to mine in many ways. While my son was growing up, I worked as a freelance writer/editor, scrounging up jobs while trying to squeeze in my creative work. But just two years ago, a pt teaching job practically fell into my lap. It was the perfect job for me as our son left for college and the house was feeling empty, with just the right amount of hours, decent pay, and a very short commute. Still, it was a BIG decision to give up having total freedom over my days in favor of a more regular schedule.</p> <p>The good news is that I've found that having a little more structure to my week has had some benefits: 1) it forces me to dress up more , 2) it brings me in more regular contact with other people (which is much healthier than working in solitude 24/7), and 3) it makes me use my time more wisely since it is more limited. There are times I miss the old days of working all day in my bathrobe, but most of the time I feel energized and happy. </p> <p>Hoping that this new job brings you all good things, Suz. I'll be interested to know how it's going. And since you can video chat for the job, you can still get away with wearing pajama bottoms (hehe!
