Sona: in my case, I think I'd be more interested in going to an allergist rather than a dermatologist, since it's a case of hives. But we'll see what the GP says on Monday...

banananutmuffin: ugh, that's exactly my situation too! hives for the last 2 weeks! It must be seasonal given that so many of us in the Northern hemisphere seem to be having issues.

Louise: sorry to hear that you were another addition to the club! Glad you're over it now!

Mochi: I'm glad you're over the eczema! Fingers crossed that it never comes back!

Elly: that sounds truly awful and is a good reminder to me that my problems are just cosmetic. I'm glad you're getting over the welts--and I know all about the bane of hyperpigmentation as I'm very prone to it (thankfully the hives don't leave marks, though).

Kari: fingers crossed that you don't get a full blown eczema attack!

lyn*: I'm glad you're getting treated for your rash, and based on all the evidence here I think your seasonal hypothesis is right on the money!

Rae: I know all about the "just wanting it to go away" feeling. This morning I looked in the mirror and said "Go away!" to my hives. Let's see if that works...

I think I want to go spend 2 weeks in Florida. Hot and humid weather sounds good...

Sona, that is good to know - and good news, since my derm did a biopsy for me. It's the first time I've been to him, so I had no idea if he was good or not.

During the past 2 weeks I've had hives. I take claritin every day and it seems to help.

I definitely think it's a seasonal thing with the weather for most people. Also... this time of year brings out a lot of stress. I think that might have something to do with it too.

rashes stink. I know Angie mentioned that a dermatologist often knows more about rashes than your family doc but as an internist I can tell you that often times a dermatologist often knows just about as much as I do by *looking* at a rash its a biopsy that often gives the answer in these tricky situations where usual treatments: medium potency steroid creams and antihistamines don't help. hoping for answers for all of you soon but most importantly relief!!!

I went through a period for about two years where I would break out in the worst eczema every four months or so. Then it stopped seven years ago, and never recurred. It's pretty interesting how the dermatologist asked me if I had asthma (which I do). There's an auto-immune connection here, at least for me.

Oh gosh-- so far so good (ditto to the wood bit) but in years past I've dealt with reactive eczema that would create big swollen welts everywhere that I'd had a break in the skin (so all over my legs from ingrown hairs and shaving irritation, and in both my elbow pits where I had blood drawn, and on the backs of my hands-- ditto, and on my face) that scarred. Two years later the scars are finally fading, but every hint of it coming back has me running for the steroids.

Then last fall I moved house and thought that I had gotten bedbugs as I had horrible mosquito-bite like welts on my legs in lines.

No, turns out I am horrifically allergic to a bio-identical hormone that is used to treat a side effect of my heart condition. Apparently the allergy is so rare they had to call the Mayo to find out about it-- that and have me take my pants off in front of at least 7 different Docs, nurses, PhysAssistants, interns, ect.

Of course, those hives also left hyperpigmentation and I looked crazy for months. It also took several weeks to flush the crud out of my system.

I hope you ladies have better luck! but believe me, I sympathize.

Just don't scratch it-- it isn't good for you, and it is one of the only sounds on the planet that drives me crazy-- courtesy of sharing a room with my younger brother during the years he used to scratch his skin bloody in his sleep because of eczema and dry skin.

I saw my specialist Tuesday, and I have to go back tomorrow for some test results. Still don't really know what's going on... At this point I don't care why it's here so much as I want it to just.go.away.

C1, sorry to hear that yours still hasn't gone away - I was hopeful when you said that the antihistamines weren't making you as jittery. :T Good luck for your appointment Monday!

I'm not experiencing a rash or full blown eczema yet (knock on wood!) but my skin is freaking out as it gets dryer and colder - this started in Toronto where it is MUCH drier than Seattle was when I left.
Dry and itchy patches of skin, random breakouts in areas where I don't normally experience any... and a chronic cold-weather cough, a legacy party favor after having bronchitis years ago.
In years past I've had itchy, rashy eczema on my hands & face when the climate & season changed in fall/early Winter, so my theory is the same as yours.

Crazy stuff! (pun intended) - I was fortunate to see a dermatologist on Day 10 of this issue. Gah!

I think it's the season change :p

I see that Lyn* and Rae have been having rash issues too...mine haven't gone away yet and I'm seeing the doctor again on Monday. Hopefully I can get to a specialist soon because it's been far too long, though I'm starting to adjust to the antihistamines.
