I'm a CA native too, but lived in WA most my life. I still get chills driving Hwy 1 from Seattle to San Diego. It's a long trip, but you'll never regret it. From beaches to mountains to wildlife to red wood forests to the best wine.

OK, to help you out...we have done quite a bit of travelling in the USA, including Alaska, the San Francisco area (including wine country), Maine, New England, the major cities of the East Coast down to Washington DC.

You can fly direct to NZ from LAX, San Francisco and Vancouver.

We both like history, wine, food, outdoors and nature, big cities and small towns - so we are pretty flexible travellers!

Oh, if you have the time and luxury, driving up the Pacific Coast Highway is a beautiful wandering jaunt up the coast of CA. You can stop at San Simeon and see Hearst Castle as well. I must confess though, that I never have, being a CA native! I get impatient at the sight of all the tour buses and how long it might take to get in lol.

San Juans are amazing. Depending on what part of the USA you want to visit I highly recommend Charleston, SC. Good beaches, food and culturally interesting. It's where the Civil War started.
If you want California (assuming you'll be flying LAX to NZ) I'd recommend the San Francisco bay area, and especially the Redwoods north of it.

It is such a big country with many different regions. Perhaps you could narrow down what you're looking for? Outdoorsy activities and scenic beauty? City life and great restaurants and museums? Such a wide range, even us Americans have barely seen most of our own country!

Having thought Angie was off to some islands in the Caribbean and not off the coast of Washington state I have just spent the last half an hour reading about the San Juan Islands and add starting to plan another trip to the USA. There are so many places that are little secrets!

We will in fact have some room to travel in the USA some time in the next 12 months as we have an obligation (and desire) to take Vanessa back to NZ to visit grandparents and great-grandparents. The thought of a 26 hour flight without a stopover does not appeal, so we will want to have a stopover somewhere and we will probably want to make a little bit of a trip of it - perhaps 7 days or so.

So, where are those other secret little places that are known to local residents, but not advertised on a national or global scale?
