Thinking about it, I would most often first say "How do you do" *then* followed by a "nice to meet you" as a general response to meeting someone for the first time. (I have to giggle at myself, that when reflecting on this word usage, I probably sound like I've (partially) just stepped out of 19th Century English Literature with my response. I didn't realise I was so outdated until now!)

I'm absolutely sure, however, that I definately say "nice to meet you" over "nice to see you" because of the logic mentioned above.

<< if it's someone who I think I may have met before I don't want to offend them by acting like I had forgotten them so I say "nice to see you" but if it's a new person definitely "nice to meet you">>

Yep, I do exactly what Natalie is saying. If I'm sure I've never met the person, I say "it's nice to meet you!" If I look at the person and my brain goes hmmmm...., then I hedge my bets and say "it's nice to see you."

I'm terrible with faces and even worse with names. :O

I do what Natalie said sometimes.. if it's someone who I think I may have met before I don't want to offend them by acting like I had forgotten them so I say "nice to see you" but if it's a new person definitely "nice to meet you"

srujana- there is a comedian-- Brian Regan-- who does a whole thing on the stupid things we say.. like when the waitress says 'enjoy your meal" and we reply "you too ;-)" If you've never seen him it's worth getting the DVDs.. I really appreciate that his routines are pretty clean and family friendly as well.

"Nice to meet you" for the same logic you mentioned.

But then my logic goes out the window and I often catch myself saying "see you later" to people that I know I won't ever see again in my life...and I walk away feeling slightly idiotic =/ (but then I get over it, cuz I really never will see them again)

If I have heard of the person ( like a friend of a friend ) I tend to say nice to see you. Otherwise, I generally say nice to meet you.

I have no idea why, though.

I can't for the life of me remember what I say!! But I agree nice to meet you makes more sense. I cause confusion saying bye to people because I always say see you later this always causes confusion with my luvs because he thinks i mean later in the day when I mean later as in soon because i don't know exactly when i will see a person next! x

Do you find yourself saying 'Nice to meet you' or 'Nice to see you'. I have always said 'Nice to meet you' but I have noticed a lot of people say 'Nice to see you'. To me, that doesn't make sense. That is reserved for encountering a person you have already met after you have been introduced.
Perhaps I am alone in this. I was just curious which of these two things (or perhaps it is something different altogether) you say?
