I'm really impressed with the system created for giveaways, they won't take over YLF, and provide an edge to dedicated readers. This is going to be fun!

It's been interesting reading all the responses. I can't add anything that hasn't been mentioned.

I've never participated in giveaways at other blogs (for example perfume blogs) because I wasn't a frequent commenter (although a frequent reader), and it didn't feel right. Obviously many people feel differently. Oh well, that's how it goes. I know for sure there are people who do it for sport only.

I'm also very glad that Sihaya won the Miz Mooz contest.

I like Marianna's suggestion of asking the person who won the giveaway to at least write a review.

As for Angie reviewing more sponsored products - if she has time, why not? I trust her judgment and I'm always interested in her opinion on items.

I think those people should either participate or not. Don't just come out to comment ONCE so you can win a contest and then disappear again. As I already said, I know YLF can't control this and perhaps doesn't want to, but I think it's obnoxious.

That said, the information architect in me votes for a dedicated section of the forum or perhaps the store to house giveaways and contests. YLF has been partially commercial for a while now, so I don't see why this should bother anyone. I trust Angie and Greg would never let it get to the point where It would get out of hand or kill the spirit of YLF.

Anyway, I envision a separate section (basically a new tab that says "giveaways"), either on the forum or in the store, that should periodically stream in on the main blog, just like the store items do.

Thanks for the responses. They have been varied and interesting.

So often, Julie hits the nail on the head. Such an astute lady. The people who frequently comment on YLF blog posts and those who are regular commenters on the forum represent and extremely small part of our readership. YLF has a HUGE silent majority. There are thousands and thousands who come to the site each day who do not utter a word and we don't know how they feel - because they don't comment.

If it were a blog that was only updated once a week, then I might get annoyed with a lot of giveaway posts. The amount of posts here (generally 9 a week) is so high, that a giveaway post once in a while doesn't bother me. I do think that you have to be really picky about which products you endorse in this way, but free is always a good thing in my book!

I like the few and far between giveaways. Could there be more? Yes, but it would have to be tasteful. I think it would be more fair to the vendor if the giveaway is on the main blog. More exposure for them. I understand why a lot of "Regulars" don't like it when a non-regular doesn't win, but in the interest of fairness I don't see a way to do it differently.

I was also thrilled by Sihaya winning the Miz Mooz contest, but YLF has a much wider audience than the forum members or the people who comment on the blog. There are so many people reading Angie's daily advice and acting upon it who would never comment on the blog. Does this silent readership not deserve the chance to win a competition? I think they do.

Just my 2 cents, but I think that the way the site is right now is really good for the image of Angie's integrity, meaning one does not have the feeling that she recommends things she doesn't stand behind. I think a rare giveaway (like twice a year) can be nice, but I would not really want to see it become a regular part of the site. It's a bit tawdry.

I agree with Lisa--it makes me a little angry that so many contest junkies enter. I know there is no way to enforce this, but I really wish these contests were only open to people who contributed to YLF. Really, that's the only thing I don't like about giveaways. Well, that and the fact that I haven't won any yet :p It's so ironic: I tend to have decent luck with contests, yet on the one site I am most dedicated to, I never win anything!

I was a little sad when I read so many people entering the giveaway that were just contest junkie's. I was happy to see a participating member of YLF win instead. I typically stay away from giveaways, too concerned I will start getting junk mail. If there were more on YLF, it would be 50/50 if I entered. I'd have to really want the item to enter. If this were another site, I never would. Kudos to Greg and Angie for creating an environment comfortable enough for me to even consider give-away entries.

I love giveaways and I actually like them being part of the main blog. This way I and I'm guessing more people are likely to run into them which would be the goal of the company providing the giveaway to begin with. YLF give aways still feel informative and not commercial - like you have indeed exposed me to/educated me about a new brand/product/service. I really like the idea of "you have to be an active member to win" if that's implementable on the technology end.

A lot of giveaways I see offer extra chances for winning if you do certain things: link to the post on your blog, add the blog to your blogroll, friend them on FB/Twitter, etc. I daresay YLF could offer siimilar extra chances, and have one of those be give an extra chance to YLF members who sign up for the giveaway.

I like the Friday afternoon giveaways idea, because it might not feel it was interfering with the main 'business' of YLF.

As an observation, from the point of view of international readers, although the blog posts come out in a US local morning and afternoon time it is different for us [obviously]. In the UK, for example, the morning posts used to come out at about 3-3.30pm (but are now earlier - more like 12-12.30pm?). I don't have a clue when the other ones come out - I'm obviously busy around then or in bed!

So I often miss afternoon posts. This *might* make it a particularly good idea to have a giveaway then - ie a time that would be really good for US readers and easily missed by non-US readers. Does that make any sense?

I will echo some of the same sentiments here. I am fine with reviews and giveaways. I know that Angie would always write a truthful review.
Also, Like Sarah, I don't enter giveaways on other sites, so it is nice to enter for a giveaway on a blog that I actually like and follow.
I think the best timing would be Friday afternoon, announce the winners on Monday afternoon. The shorter, the better.
I am with Queenie. I was really thrilled when Sihaya won the last contest. I know that there is no way to prevent people from entering a particular contest, but perhaps active membership status by the time of the conclusion of the contest could be prerequisite to win the prize (but not to enter the contest). In other words, the random number generator picks a winner, you check and if the person is not an active member, you pick another number until you hit upon someone who is at least an active member.

I love giveaways. The more the better as far as I'm concerned.
but..
I'm going to be the sore loser here and say that it annoys me when there is a giveaway and everyone and their dog whom we have never heard a peep out of enters with a comment.
I was thrilled when Sihaya won the Miz Mooz contest.
I do love the idea of Friday afternoon give aways, as well as the idea of the person receiving the item being willing to write a review.

I like the idea. Yes, a separate section. And Isabel's idea about road-testing/reviews is spot on.

They don't bother me at all, giveaways are always nice...although I have yet to enter into one. They always spark a rise in blog comments and participation:)

I totally trust your item discernment for such giveaways.

I am pretty neutral on them. I don't think that they would take away from anything and I think it would give people a chance at trying something new. This is a great forum so I think if something didn't suit someone they would just pass it on.....

I like the idea of a separation of the two parts, though. It would be great if whoever "won" could then post a review, like your store ( Is it true to size, easy to wear, easy to wash ?... ). That would actually be tremendously helpful to me. I would love to have "roadtesters" so to speak. It would be beneficial for members to do this for the rest without having to commit any of their own money. Everybody wins at that point, I think.

I expect most of the bigger fashion/style sites to do giveaways, so I have no problem with YLF doing the same. I don't see a new area needed for it; just a simple blog post and something on the home page would probably suffice.

I also like prodcut reviews, and have no problem with them being "paid" ones where you receive the item for free to review. I trust Angie's judgement and know she would not plug a product that didn't reach her standards.

Would we Canadians be eligible? If so I'd be interested! If not, oh well...LOL

I have seen it done on other sites in the forums and it works well. Those that want to play can and those that don't just move on through the forum.
