Angie, my head is spinning too! I loved reading your Cape Town post and seeing the photos. Truly a beautiful place. I'll have to pick your brain later, as it gets closer to the time when we're actually going.

Kate -- What a cool place to spend a semester! Thanks for the recommendations. I think we will stick with the safari and Cape Town -- particularly since we will probably be bringing my two young kids, so we would want to stick to more family-oriented activities.

Bravo, Kate. You are 100% spot one and I couldn't have said it better myself. Cape Town *is* the prettiest city in the world. I've been all over the globe and nothing can top it's natural beauty. It actaully gives me the shivers even thinking about it. Have you read these blog posts:

I mean a South African Winter – which is a US Summer.

Cathy, give Johannesburg a miss. Safari and CapeTown is PLENTY.

How exciting! I spent a semester in South Africa (August - December 2007), so I can't say too much about the best time of year, though the weather was great pretty much the whole time I was there, which is their spring. Angie, when you say winter, do you mean US winter, or South Africa winter?

I second Angie's recommendation of Capetown - it's probably the most beautiful city I've been to. Depending on how long you'll be in South Africa and how touristy you want to be, doing the game drive and CT would be plenty! I wouldn't recommend spending too much time in Johannesburg as it has a reputation as the most unsafe of the cities, and is certainly the largest. I also spent a lot of time in Durban, which I liked but it's not an attraction like Cape Town.

Honestly, what you should see depends on what you want to see. There is a lot of suffering in South Africa, but most visitors don't want to see it and can easily vacation in South Africa without being aware of the number of people living in shacks, dying of AIDs, etc. So, I think the first order of business in planning your trip is deciding how much of South Africa you want to see while you're there.

WOW! My head is spinning. SPINNING. That's fabulous, Cathy!

You must see CT. That's the best place in South Africa by far. A two hour flight from Zululand. Game viewing is best in Winter because the animals can't hide behind the foliage.

I can talk about this forever, but I'll stop for a bit seeing as you have time :0)

So if you've been following my thread about the disco auction party, you may have read that my husband was the high bidder for a fantastic live auction item: 6 day/6 night African safari package on the east coast of South Africa! I'm still in shock, and can't believe I will be going to South Africa in the next two years.

So I was wondering what is the best time of year to visit South Africa, and any "must see" places. We'll be staying at one of the Zulu Nyala properties in Hluhluwe. I really want to see Capetown. Anywhere else?
