Maya, I think you just did something that is really hard to do. You took responsibility, created something that was visible to managers when you were unclear about what was required and didn't have the experience. Congratulations.

Maya, was it this project you got the stellar reviews on or the first one you attempted? Either way, great job. If you haven't yet received feedback on this project yet, frett not. You were honest with them about your capabilities and you can chalk this up to experience. At least this trial position is allowing you to work on more than one assignment. Sounds like they're going to wind up with a pretty well-rounded picture of your skills and strengths by doing things this way.

Thanks for putting up with my venting today.

I still haven't had much of a chance to prove myself so it obviously made me a bundle of nerves that my biggest project yet is something I don't even know how to do. But they were really impressed. In fact they were a little -too- impressed: I have to wireframe another website tomorrow because I did such a good job! Luckily it is only one page though, instead of an entire network of sites. So overall I couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

So far things are going REALLY well. I am very hopeful that they will offer me something long term, but I just never know if finances permit. I'll be sad to leave next week. It has been a good job and a great place to work. Very challenging and yes, stressful, but ultimately very rewarding.

Hi Maya,
Are you able to present the project and go over your thoughts with the client? I think that would smooth over any initial concerns and allow your creativity, problem solving and initiative to shine through any minor glitches.

Remember, the wireframes are just the first step and chances are the client will have lots of input, changes and suggestions. That will give you a second chance to go back and provide another draft.

Please feel free to send me a personal message if you would like another pair of eyes. I have a job interview this afternoon but I'm happy to take a look if I'm still here. My experience is if you can walk them through your idea, that most people won't notice the little details, especially if this is just the initial concept coming together. If it helps at all, I'm in marketing and have seen a few wireframes. The ones I have seen usually look like screen shots so I'm sure you've done great

Well the good news is I opened to stellar reviews from both the manager and the web developer...though I know secretly that not everything is as spic-and-span as it should be. But as long as it's just me who is aware of that....

The first project I did was fab and the next project on the list looks fab too. They are within my capabilities and are creative. So it's not a bad job at all, and either way it's a good learning experience. I'm still hoping they hire me.

Normally someone else does all the organizational stuff and hands it off to us to take care of the creative aspect, but this time it's a nonprofit who can't afford two separate organizations. I understand why they needed to do that, but still, I wish they hadn't asked me to do it on my third day of work..

Oh well, spilled milk. I have a few edits to make and then I am done, thank god!

Maya, I really hope you can cut yourself some slack with this one. It sounds to me like you were in an impossible situation (I agree with Rosie- poor management) and, for any review situation, you have to have a calm sense of 'I did my best under the circumstances' and maybe turn any criticism on this project into a question of 'how can we make sure we have the appropriate time for a project like this in the future?'

Really makes me angry they put you in this situation, but hopefully things will settle down.

Remember its just a job, not your whole life....I know to some careers are very important, and I can respect that, but no one ever died saying 'I wish I spent more time at work'....whats really worse is when the home front is stressed out...

Oh Maya, frustrating indeed!!

Frankly, this sounds like a case of poor management, but I know how that doesn't help the fact that people "relied" on you to make it work. You were truthful about your experience from the beginning, you worked hard and did your best. Unfortunately, that is the best you can do.

Since October I've been working with a web developer who has years of experience and it has been a nightmare. No initiative, no care in the final product and just plain stupidity. Even if this job does not work out (sounds like a nutty place given everything you've said, actually) I have no doubt that you will learn how to do what you need to do in the appropriate time period and that you will constantly exceed customer demands in the future. This is simply an unfair assignment.

You just don't ask someone who has never done something before to do a time-is-of-the-essence project!!

This new job is so stressful, my god.

I think they are testing me, which is fine, but I'm afraid I'm floundering. In summary, I was asked if I had ever done any information architecture for a website, or any wireframing. I have no experience with either one, and I told them that, but said I would be willing to try, and so it became my job. I was fine with that. I don't mind learning new things and doing work no one else wants to do. That's the only way to grow. That is not the problem.

The problem is that it is extremely time sensitive (in fact it's going out tonight). I basically had to do the whole thing in 3 days, including whatever very minimal research I could do. I have no idea if I did it right or not. I have a feeling there are some huge mistakes lurking in there, but at this point it's too late to care. No one else in the office knows how to do it either, so I'm really on my own here, and the guy who will be reviewing these does NOT mince words. He seemed very frustrated with me last week because it was technically due on Friday and here I am, barely able to finish on Monday.

So you might be wondering why I'm writing all of this if I'm so pressed for time: I just need a break. I have been working non-stop since 9:00 on this, and my brain feels like a piece of tempura (battered and deep fried). I have a splitting headache and just can't concentrate. I'm dreading my review, both now and long term. I'm afraid the client is going to write back and ask what idiot did these totally unprofessional wireframes and site map (I know I messed up the site map, but I couldn't be bothered doing a killer job when I had so much else to do). And so all my hopes of this turning into a full time job will be destroyed.

Anyway, I'm done whining. Thanks for reading...
