Theresa-I'm glad your car situation is coming under control. That's a big relief!

This post is very timely because I was just thinking about this very topic recently. When I'm stressed, I definitely reach for basics, and experimenting just isn't fun for me. My goal is to be in the same place as Stringy - that my basics are nice enough and go together and don't take a lot of time when things in life are chaotic.

I think that my desire for capsules reflects my desire for control over something, however small. How disappointing, then, that I can't even manage to put together capsules.

LOL Stringy, the jumbled mix of orphans - that sounds like a certain area of my wardrobe!

Good luck sorting that out!

Tam, you're back! How was your holiday?

Theresa, I wish I could say my whole wardrobe is ok, but really I've only just got the casual outfits and the formal outfits under control. Everything in between is a confused jumble of orphans and doesn't-quite-suit-me stuff that I've been ignoring in the hopes that it goes away :P

Good to hear about the car, reliability is so important!

Well the car situation is now sorted - my new car will be ready for delivery early next week! So only a few more days with the rental car and life should go back to normal - well, lots of debt, but a car that is completely reliable, so that makes it all worth it!!

But thanks for sharing with me that you are affected in similar ways - its certainly interesting the way stress does affect people.

Stringy I think you are in the position that I now want to be in - all your wardrobe is good enough that even just chucking on a simple outfit is now good. I think the colour thing is right too - I went for plain denim shorts and plain coloured tanks - grey/white etc... zero colour at all.

Refugee I'm honoured that you are my twin.

Angie you are spot on with the control thing - I am a bit/lot of a control freak (surprise surprise!), so having been thrown into such chaos and and having zero control over it definitely affected me.

Tam I hope your scooter is ok!!! How was your trip??? I can't wait to hear about it!

Sally I think the capsule idea is a great one, and something I've been pondering too.

I did my enormous pile of folding and ironing today, so I'm feeling much better that I have my options again too now!

I am going through a really stressful time at the moment (well its been a stressful year but wont go into details) and I knew I would feel better if I had the house clean and I did it and feel better. I also think it is why I have had this great desire for a capsule wardrobe. I want everything in order and under control.

Ugh Theresa I hear you with the car thing - they can be a big $$$ suck. My scooter is currently in the garage because I couldn't start it - ironically I was trying to start it to take it in for a service. I'm procrastinating here by catching up on ylf instead of calling the garage to find out what the damage is. I've also spend the last few days doing housecleaning and am even planning to attack the dreaded verandah today - totally related I am sure!!!

Katiepea, I wouldn't throw out your boring stuff until you've got a replacement outfit for stressful days. I tend to fall back to my old tee/jeans safe zone when I'm stressed, because I don't want to spend time thinking about clothes. But these days my tees are good quality in a cut that suits me, and my jeans are skinnies. So I can add some Cons (which I always used to wear anyway) and a BF jacket and look good enough, if not worth posting in a WIW.

Does anyone else wear different colours when they're stressed? I go straight to black/grey/denim when I'm feeling pushed to the limit.

Sorry to hear about your car, Theresa. Fingers crossed you get it sorted out soon.

So sorry to hear about the death of your car. Urrrgh. Awful :(

Your obsessive cleaning ritual makes perfect sense, T. It's a way for you to feel in control of your surroundings since stress is often caused by lack of control.

I'm sure you look more stylish than you think during your stressful period!

Good luck.

Oh Theresa, I must be your doppleganger on the other side of the world. Yes, simplify, declutter, organize and withdraw. My fashion quotient has deteriorated significantly, since I lost my sister. It happened slowly for me. It has taken me a while to realize this is what is going on. Hang in and know you are not the only one.

Theresa, I hope you can find a great deal on a car. Financial stress is one of the worst kinds. When I'm stressed I want to eat chocolate and have even been known to dig for frozen chocolate chips in a big freezer before realizing what I was doing. What helps is taking a walk or making plans to get together with a friend.

What a pain to hear about your car. You poor thing!

I hear you. I find myself slipping in and out of dressing nicely according to my stress levels or (and this is a biggy for me!) how tired I am.

Quite frankly, when I'm exhausted (as I am today - Master 4 woke me at 4.25am and my hubby is away so caring for three kids and working is not a lot of fun!) I am too tired to *really* care about how I look. Trying to dress in a creative, stylish way goes out the window and boring pants and simple tops come out to play.

I was just thinking to myself that I really need to throw them out, so that I can't go back to my bad habits. Today for work, I'm dressed "OK" but certainly not something I'd want to post on here, that's for sure....

Oh no, Theresa, sorry to hear about your car! What a bummer. I hope that you are able to find a super replacement car quickly.

I do the same thing. I don't fall back into BAD habits, necessarily, but definitely go for something tried-and-true. I guess that makes sense - no time or energy to be creative, so I want to wear something foolproof that I don't have to worry about, but still makes me feel good enough to get out the door.

It's more when I am having a really low day - feeling depressed or sick or both - that I tend to really backslide and dress in a way that I find "boring" on myself.

Last week my car died, and as it turns out, needs to be replaced as its not fixable. Now the few days between breaking down, getting the diagnosis, and making plans to buy a new car, have been VERY stressful and I found myself cleaning and organising!!

I always do this - if I get stressed (and I mean extra stress on top of the usual day to day stuff), I clean and clean and clean!!! I declutter, and I organise. I think I'm craving the stability and calm that comes from having a clean clutter free home. People who know me well know that if I'm cleaning frantically, something major is going on LOL

I also withdraw - I don't check my favourite websites, I only check email occasionally etc...

BUT I also dress horribly - very much back to old habits. I lose all interest in my appearance. What ever basic tank and shorts I can find, zero make up, no accessories.

So, it got me thinking - what do you do when you are stressed?
Does it affect the way you dress?

This is the first time I've dealt with a large stressor since I've taken so much more notice of what I'm wearing etc, so I found it quite interesting this morning when I got dressed and actually put on something nice - it made me realise how the stress had really impacted on my wardrobe choices. (And, no, definitely no WIW's from the past few days LOL).
