It is amazing how much I've taken for granted and I am so happy that we have such an efficient and responsive government and emergency services in situations where basic services have been lost. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my first coffee in 48 hours!</p> <p>It sounds like the challenge now will be in supplying food and petrol to all the people who have been isolated for the last few days. The supermarket nearest me was closed by police on Tuesday after it was overwhelmed by people trying to buy supplies and apparently becoming aggressive when they couldn't. It has not reopened yet, but hopefully tomorrow. I think there will also be a lack of fresh food, as trucks have been unable to get through, and a lot of farms have been flooded and lost all their crops. I think there will probably be some difficult times ahead for us all.</p> <p>Anyway, I am grateful for what we have and that there has not been the loss of life seen in Grantham. My home is safe and in perfect condition and we were fortunate in that we didn't even lose power. I am so very glad that back in 2007 when we were buying that my father advised us to "make sure you don't buy in the flood plain" and "Check the levels before you buy." He was in the Defence Forces and helped with flood relief after the 1974 flood and knew the ramifications of buying in a potential flood plain. It was wise advice given that we bought in a time of drought and many people (including real estate agents) advised us that "Wivenhoe Dam would prevent any future floods affect Brisbane". We sadly now know that isn't the case. </p> <p>My poor, beautiful city. The places I shop, the restaurants I've dined at, places I regularly drive and even my work has been flooded. I have literally cried at the stories of horror that people have endured and because of my own personal experience with natural disaster, I know the trials and tribulations and turmoil that they will continue to endure over the following months and even years to come. I can only imagine the horror many people will face when they call their insurer to be told that they aren't covered in the instance of flooding. On a personal level it is starting to financially effect me now as work is being cancelled due to flooding of the building at which I work and my husband's work has been flooded. Still, I know that I'm very, very lucky. We're all safe here but have been cut off from everything, all the roads surrounding us have been flooded so we've had no way of getting out of our little suburb. Only today has some of the water subsided enough for us to get to anywhere else but the main motorway (Ipswich Motorway) into town is still blocked in several large sections starting from where I live towards the city. My workplace is flooded in also, I've included a picture that one of my workmates took - this is the front carpark of the office and those are blue shadesails used to protect the cars from the sun. I have never seen anything like this before and I hope I dont ever have to see it again.</p> <p>Glad to hear that everyone else is safe and sound too. Times like these make you appreciate the little things in life, take the time to tell people you love them and dont sweat the small stuff. Our house is fine, but we are in a pocket with the river on three sides and the end of our road is inundated. My son's friend was unable to get home. The water is flowing so fast, and there is a ton of debris being carried along. Several of the major roads have been cut, so I think once the river peaks tomorrow morning we will probably be cut off from the rest of Brisbane for a little while. We still have power and water at this stage, although we have been warned about the possibility of power outages and requested to conserve drinking water.<br /> My husband had to go to work in the CBD this morning to shut down the computer systems before the power is turned off, and he says the water was only about a metre below the train line, so I am hoping he will be able to get home.</p> <p>The evacuations seem to have gone smoothly, and I haven't heard of any loss of life in Brisbane, unlike the awful situation in the Lockyer Valley where there are still about 90 people missing.
