Khris, most people's insurance will not cover alternative treatments - hence they are surprisingly affordable! Don't rule it out without checking around - it might not cost as much as you think (especially when you consider what your current co-pays & travel expenses are for traditional treatment). Hopefully a dietician/nutritionist will be covered as they can also provide a wealth of practical info.

Out of curiousity, what is your daughter's current daily fiber intake?

If you're looking for unsolicited advice from a total non-medical person...

* Citrucell tablets - can be taken daily, non-addictive
* Activia yogurt - they have some guarantee to keep you regular
* Fiber Up and Slim Down cookbook - I may have suggested this in another thread - so apologies if this is a repeat. I don't suggest it because of the slim down part but only because of the fiber part - they are superb recipes
* Generic stool softener - the longer she is constipated, the more difficult it is to resolve, in part because of the discomfort factor
* Senakot - natural plant laxative (available in regular drugstore)

Hope she continues to feel better!

Khris....So sorry to hear this , very frustrating:(

Keeping her on laxatives...ughhh She may just have sluggish bowels...not uncommon, Have you tried Pysilium Husks...all natural...no additive and cleanses the bowels without any added surgar or fillers. You can get it at Trader Joes, and just add to water or juice..one tablespoon. It will keep her regular without taking a laxitive, It is gentle, safe, and all natural:)

Khris I was just going to suggest seeing a dietitician but I see you have already thought of that! Good luck!!

I am hesistant to make any suggestions as I am by no means a gastroenterologist, and I am sure you have already done lots of reading on the topic. However it is very important to remember that there is a big difference between IBD and IBS. IBS by definition is a diagnosis of exclusion, and is just a way of describing a grouping of symptoms rather than a specific disease process, so you're right in saying it is a "catch all". I'm sure knowing that doesn't make you any less frustrated in dealing with these symptoms, but at least you don't have to worry about things like increased risk of colorectal cancer etc in the future as you have with IBD.

I have major issues with constipation. Stress tends to bring it on. Plus poor diet...I am gluten intolerant. Every day I take a supplement of dietary bacteria. Its the same thing as what you get in yogurt. You can add yogurt to her diet but its really not enough...the supplement is a nice high dose. I get mine in powder format from the health food store and keep it in the fridge. Then add a half teaspoon to warm water to activate the bacteria ech morning. I may take another dose in the evening if I have a stressful day, eat poorly or take antibiotics.

I also take fibre supplement. Benefibre works well for me. Just make sure you drink lots of water.

When I was on the cruise, I had NO issues with my bowels. I suggest you take your daughter on a cruise and see if that helps.

But seriously, it sounds like you are hitting walls with the medical doctors. Have you considered a naturopath? Sometimes their testing methods can pick up issues that are overlooked in standard medical tests. Perhaps she has a wheat allergy/sensitivity. Or lactose sensitivity?

Don't give up yet. There is a very real reason why she is not well. Every step you take will provide more clues about what is going on and you will find your answers!

I'm so sorry for your daughter (and you too). I am sure it must be so frustrating.

My boyfriend has major issues with acid reflux and with ulcers and has a very painful digestive tract. He has had all sorts of tests but although they know he has these issues, they don't know the cause. He is on meds (like Prevacid) but they only help so much.

What he has found is that he has to pay a lot of attention to what he eats and how it makes him feel. He has been going through this for most of his life now (probably has dealt with it for about 10-15 years at least), and he is at a point where he knows most of the foods he has to stay away from. He can't have any caffeine--it relaxes the duodenum and allows the acid to regurgitate back into the digestive tract. So if she's consuming sodas and the like, I would definitely stop that and see if it helps.

He also stays away from anything acidic (like orange juice), spicy foods, and alcohol. He said that overeating--stuffing himself--is painful because it pushes stuff back up through the digstive tract. He also stays away from eating too many foods that expand after you have eaten them, like bread--it has the same results as stuffing himself.

He asked if your daughter has been tested for H. Pylori. A lot of people with ulcers or gastritis have it. In fact, 90% of people with ulcers have H. Pylori. If your daughter has that, they can give her an antibiotic and she will improve. Unfortunately for my boyfriend, he is one of the 10% who doesn't have it. He also wondered if she has had an upper endoscopy. Sorry if you have already addressed this before--I thought it might be helpful!

It might be helpful for her to keep a food diary and see how what she eats impacts how she feels. When I told him about your daughter he was surprised the doctor wasn't discussing foods to stay away from--he said the caffeine thing in particular is pretty well-known.

I'm sorry Khris. I don't have kids, but I even feel so at a loss when I can't help my kitties when they're not doing well, so I can't imagine your frustrations.
I have had my gall bladder out and also have some food sensitivities, so this is a topic I'm all too familiar with
Have her drink plenty of water
Add flax to her diet (ground seeds are best)
Limit dairy, including milk
Stick to lean proteins vs. red meats
I know every body is different, but these are the top few things that work for me. I don't want to gross you out but if I don't follow any one of these steps I get so sick and cramped in my tummy and I will go for days without bowel movement.
I hope everything works out and that your daughter can find some comfort and rest until it's settled.

Thanks everyone

Angie- she hasn't been diagnosed with IBS so she hasn't been on any meds for that. Honestly, I think that IBS is just a crap diagnosis anyway (although at this point, that's probably what they will call it). It seems to be the catch all for when they can't figure it out.

We chose to go to this hospitasl because it has a reputation for having a less invasive and more wholistic philosophy, but it's still traditional medicine. Our insurance won't cover alternative treatment (and we can't afford to pay out of pocket), although I am going to see about whether a dietician would be covered.

Rather than spending the day at the park with our friends today, we are cleaning out dd's system. The doctor said we may even have to do it twice. It's terrible for her, horrible for me, and ds is upset that after missing two weeks of seeing his friends he is stuck at home again. But- she could have been admitted to the hospital, and that would have been even worse.

Khris, I am sorry to hear about all the issues that DD is having. I can only imagine how stressful this must be for you and your family. I second (or third) the suggestion of looking into some kind of alternative treatment (naturopath, homeopath etc). The fact of the matter is that traditional medicine has its limits and by nature it is focused on treatment rather than prevention.

So many things are diet related, that it probably is a sensible thing to start investigating. Have you ever kept a diary of what your daughter eats? It might be a useful step in pinpointing whether there is a dietary cause.

Big hugs Khris. Sorry, I have no experience on this but experience dealing with healthcare - where I'd say be sure to do your own research and stick to your guns if you want them to run additonal tests or have questions. Squeaky wheel or at least assertive wheel definitely gets the grease in these cases. If I hadn't been paying attention during my last specialist visit, they would have run hundreds of dollars of tests on me for a second and unnecessary time!

Oh no, Khris.

I think Marianne may be onto something about stress having an effect on your digestive system. I've heard this from various sources before and I know it's true for me as well.

I don't know if your DD has IBS, I've read that either soluble and insoluble fiber can be a problem. For example, some people with IBS can't tolerate insoluble fiber and it only makes everything worse.

hang in there

Oh Khris- I am so sorry. That does sound frustrating.
I think you're on the right track to address diet. And yes, you'll find a hundred opinions, but what you said makes sense to me- increasing her fiber and stayng away from anything "sticky" that has the reputation of being constipating.
Do you have anything to lose by giving a new diet a weeks trial? That's what I'd do.... Just my humble non expert opinion

I am really sorry to hear about this! Just keep in mind that too much fiber can also block your digestive system if not accompanied by the appropriate amount of liquids. So make sure adjust her liquid intake (particularly water) accordingly.

Sorry about that, Khris! I just did a round with a GI dr and found it strange that diet was never brought up at all (aside from NSAIDs and things like that). Would you consider taking her to a nutritionist or naturopath? Would your insurance cover it? They may be able to design a proper diet for her, since there is nothing wrong with her that can be identified by conventional methods. Digestive system also responds to stress very quickly, and I am sure the dr. visits are not helping that at all.

I just got off the phone with dd's GI doctor. He finally got around to reading her test results (a upper GI and small bowel barium swallow study)- which he says were completely normal. She had started having pain again a couple of days ago, so I had given her a less intensive round of laxatives, but it hasn't worked (well, it did work, but not enough). He told me to be agressive and clean her system out every time she starts having pain again- even if it's every couple of weeks. He told me the alternative is admitting her to the hospital every time, and that's really not an option in my mind. He doesn't want to see her until February, and we're waiting for our insurance to ok the next test. He wants her taking laxatives twice a day. At least we know what is going on now (chronic backing up of her digestive system- causing acid reflux), even though we don't know why. I think it's odd that he hasn't mentioned diet at all. I'm going to try and increase her fiber and keep her away from sticky stuff (cheese and the like that tends to gum up your system), but there is contradictory info about that on the internet when I search.
It's just really frustrating!
