I really like that kitchen, Ele! Something very similar would work for us, just with slightly warmer colors (and maybe paint the walls a little brighter). I really like the way she explains things like undertones and how to combine and manipulate colors - at least for me it's very helpful,, since I am completely incompetent as far home decor goes.
I also noticed the floor is marmoleum. That's what we have now, and I thought it's not common anymore.
Thanks again! Feeling a lot less overwhelmed

Bigi, I'm sure you'll love your induction. I've cooked on one at a friend's house, and while it didn't excite me, per se, it definitely worked well. Gas isn't that common in the area of Canada where I'm from, either- so it might become an option for me too, if I move back to that neck of the woods.

Marianne, so funny that you linked to Colour Me Happy! I love that blog- read it all the time. Actually, if you check out her most recent post, there is a kitchen (not the first pic, but her client's space) which I really like.
http://colourmehappyblog.blogs.....binet.html
Very chic and modern but fits in perfectly with what I imagine is an older house.

Oh, and I'll echo Tam- stainless steel will drive you crazy if you're one of those people who likes things spic and span all the time! It's easy to clean but shows fingerprints like nobody's business. Having said that, it would still be my choice- I love the industrial/serious cook vibe it has!

Marianne, you can always install gas burners next to an induction cook top and have both.

http://homeappliances.files.wo.....ooktop.JPG

Gas isn't as easily available where I live, I would have to buy a gas flask and store in my house. And change when it's empty. So I'm not sure I'll bother with the gas. Anyway, it seems induction gives just as fast and sensitive regulation of the heat as gas. But there's no hiss and flames, of course

OK so I have never had or designed my own kitchen but I love oogling these gorgeous piccies. I'm another gas fan too. Gas cooking is one of my requirements in Melbourne househunting - the stove itself I don't mnd if its electric, but the stovetop must be gas!!

Marianne stainless steel shows up streaks easily. Lots of polishing required to keep it looking beautiful. But when it does, it does

I agree about gas, but unfortunately I must have been cursed because I've had an electric stove at every place I lived in the past 10 years! Even here the previous owners replaced a gas stove with electric, which I don't get. I went to read about induction stoves, and I like the idea, and it looks like you can install a combination of induction and gas. Hmm...
Ele, I also found some useful links on the Kitchn, and there are a few good ideas for white kitchens (unfortunately, not for the floor):
http://colourmehappyblog.blogs.....-love.html
BTW, why do you think that stainless is harder to clean? I thought it's supposed to be the other way around.
Thanks again for all your ideas!

MPJ, I am sensitive to light. I can't stomach too much artificial light. It ruins my happy mood. We have dimmers on most of our lights at home - but we live in a tiny house with HUGE windows so we need less artificial light. Plus, I am a lady of the darkness :0)

Angie, you might have cooked on a flat-top electric stove, which look very similar (but work differently) to induction. Either way, I'm with you- gas is the best! I feel that induction and other flat-topped ranges look great, but there's no beating gas for real cooks;) (I have cooked on both, btw.)

Mpj- I sort of understand, my parents have dimmers on some lights in their kitchen. If you have an island/table/eating area, it makes sense for atmosphere. But for under-counters? Why on earth!?

Okay, now I seriously do not understand dimmers in the kitchen! The previous owners of our house had dimmers on the task lighting. Who wants dim task lighting?? We were baffled and promptly removed it. I should add that we do not have a kitchen table (preferring instead, to use that space for our daughter's kitchen set and play area).

I have not tried an induction stove, Medusa. I’m naughty to have these extreme opinions sometimes! But I love the flames, the hiss and the aesthetic on top of the instant heat that gas offers. But I will definitely be on the lookout to try an induction stove just to keep an open mind.

I forgot to mention the lighting, Marianne. Must have dimmers!

Edit: You know, bigi just posted a picture of the type of stove I *have* cooked on. Perhaps I have cooked on an induction stove?

Here's a bit about pros and cons for induction:
http://theinductionsite.com/proandcon.shtml

Personally I'm in no doubt, I'm getting induction. The most obvious drawback is that it only works with cooking vessels made of magnetic materials. If you're unlucky, you won't be able to use the vessels you already have (check with a fridge magnet ).

I'm loving this Gaggenau induction cooktop, the twist pad is magnetic - you can just pick it up to easily clean the cooktop:

Marianne, just wanted to wish you luck on what sounds like a big project! I'm kind of a decorating noob really so I don't have any specific advice. We did a quick & dirty remodel of our yellow 1970's kitchen (replete with the Harvest Gold appliances) when we moved in and it was such a pain. Since we knew it wasn't our dream house, we tried to keep the upgrades reasonable though we did spring for an amazing Bosch dishwasher that totally changed my life!

I totally agree with Angie on the gas - we had it in our last home and loved cooking with it. Unfortunately, we only have electric here...

Thank you, Cricket, Ele, Anne, Bigi and Angie! I knew there would be lots of great ideas. I am amazed how well you know what you like!
Bigi, lighting is one of the things I haven't thought of yet. Right now we have an original 20s industrial-looking light fixture that I like, and also several rinky-dink area fixtures. We'll have to do something about that, but I would like to keep the main fixture. Thanks for the link to the planner tool, it looks handy!
Cricket, I had to google zinc counter tops, I am not sure what they look like. I love your dream kitchen description, sounds like you have a very good picture in your mind.
Anne - great to see you here again! Cricket already explained the craftsman term, but the main point of it that the kitchen can't be too modern to go along with the rest of the interior. I am not going for a true period kitchen, just no clash.
Angie, I had no doubt that you would be very particular about your kitchen. I would like to have a seating area - right now we have a breakfast nook, but it's more isolated.
Ele, no worries, I am very touched that you are putting so much thought into my kitchen. Thank you for the links! I really like the first kitchen with black countertops, but I am also wondering if I should go for less of a contrast... not sure what's better in real life. The floor is also a big factor, because our kitchen is fairly big and square, and there is a lot of the floor space. I am going to do some more research to see what I can do about the layout as well.
Medusa - have you tried one? I am quite intrigued about how it compares.

Angie, have you tried an induction stove? It's different from a regular electric stove. The Times article says they're the latest trend in commercial kitchens because they actually allow faster temperature changes than gas stoves.

So fab! Everyone's preferences are glorious in their own way. How fun, Marianne!

I LOVE to cook. Will happily spend 10 hours on my feet cooking and do. Here is my check list and I’m lucky because I actually have my dream kitchen:

o	Must be a small efficient galley space – no island
o	Must be open plan
o	Must have pantry and room for big works of art on surrounding walls
o	Must have happy coloured walls!
o	Must have small modern kitchen table so that my Papa can sit and yak to me while I cook
o	Must have sleek stainless steel appliances. Must cook on gas. Sorry Medusa! I will never cook electric again.
o	Must have simple zen wooden cabinetry. No glass and no motifs at all. No open shelves either. Everything must be enclosed.
o	Must have granite or cement counters
o	Must have wooden floors

Okay. I’m a kitchen princess. I’ll get off my soap box now.

I often daydream about what I'd like in a remodelled kitchen but my daydreams aren't about colour schemes and are totally about functionality. They include
* most things stored between knee and shoulder height.
*lots of drawers
*shelves that aren't too deep
* an appliance cupboard
*bench space right next to both the oven and the stove top
*lighting over the sink

I'm in the process of planning major changes for my kitchen, too. I like Scandinavian design/style. Light, simple, clean lines. My dream kitchen is light (white!) and sleek, with some rustic detail or texture for interest. Small splashes of bright colour. That's the visual part. Most importantly it has to be highly functional. Also, I might hire a lighting consultant, since functional lighting is very important in my view.

I'd like to tip you about ikea's kitchen planner tool that you can download for free. Even if you're not purchasing an ikea kitchen, this tool is very useful for planning how to design your kitchen. This software lets you drag and drop common kitchen furniture into the room and fit them to the exact measurements of your kitchen. You can see 3D views of your plan, very helpful.

http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/r.....ml#lnk-3-2

About burners, gas is not common in my corner of the world. Electricity is most widely used, but more people are getting induction (more people are getting gas, too). Personally I'm getting induction. (Maybe induction and gas :D) .

Marianne, I woke up thinking about your kitchen conundrum! I'm happy that you're thinking white subway tile- I think it can work with almost any style. I had a look through my blog for pics with it, to see if any were relevant for you.

This home jumped out at me- white cabinets, white tile and very modern looking, but still "warm" and homey as you'd expect a Craftsman house to be. They've used both black tops and butcher block which I think is a little weird, but it just shows that both look fantastic with the white!
http://www.kitchenisms.com/fin.....rlake/1094

Another one, though this kitchen is galley style:
http://www.kitchenisms.com/fin.....sydney/995

This is one of my favourite kitchens EVER- I love how it's modern but rustic at the same time:
http://www.kitchenisms.com/wp-.....te-two.jpg

If you're getting new appliances, what colour do you think you'll go for? White is classic, stainless is modern and industrial-looking (but harder to keep clean).

Oh, and tell me to back off if I'm annoying you/overstepping- I just love kitchens so much! I could think about them all day long

Cricket, you reminded me that I do indeed have a dream kitchen. Something that reminds me of the French countryside. I have a little hand-woven tablecloth that my host mom from France gave me and I would build my entire kitchen around that. It has such beautiful colors (primaries mainly).

My dream kitchen ... very vintage ... white subway tile, creamy cabinets with pewter bin pulls, wood floors, farmhouse sink, schoolhouse pendant lighting. I don't have a favorite countertop, but do have some zinc countertops I purchased on Craig's List which I'll end up using eventually.

I don't bake, so it didn't occur to me. Perhaps they will fix it, and you could have me over for a tea party when I am in town

It would be quite convenient! Unfortunately while I hate cooking, I LOVE baking, and baking requires a lot more space. I would love to see a slide-out counter in a future model. Then when I am a millionaire, I will buy it for my Manhattan penthouse.

Thanks for the suggestion, Medusa! I've heard about them, but didn't realize they were mainstream. It could be a good option for us. Have you used one?

Marianne - here's an appliance idea for you. Consider an induction stove, which is 90% efficient, so it saves a lot of energy compared with gas burners (40% efficient) and electric burners (70%). I learned about this from a column by Harold McGee in the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01.....wanted=all

Medusa, yes - the appliances are old. I haven't looked into it yet, but it *should* be an easier decision, based on ratings, costs, etc. The "look" is a lot harder for me because I am a lousy home decorator.
Thank you for the links, Ele and Julie! Ele, I was actually thinking subway tiles - the house was built in the 20s and they go well with that era. The floor will have to be different from the rest of the house as we won't be able to match the hardwood without overhauling everything. I didn't realize you had a blog about this - I am going to explore...
Julie, I love the first picture! Thank you for the idea, I think that style would work very well.

I love properties with character, I currently live in a converted church and hope to move one day to a barn conversion. I personally love the mix of old and new a shaker kitchen provides

If there is room I would love to have a large kitchen table.

Good luck in designing your kitchen Marianne.
