Oh Kirstie that is sensational news!

My friend from Bowen (a bit north of Proserpine) was complaining this morning that he had no power and was hot without the air con, so as soon as he said that I figured he didn't really have any major concerns lol.

I truly think the reason we have managed to escape with no reported loss of life yet, is because the NQ'ers are so very aware of the devastation these things can cause, so took every precaution they could, and heeded all the warnings to stay safe.

Its a testament to the work and plans put in place for improvement every single time a cyclone has whipped through those areas...

(Between the floods and now this cyclone, I'm feeling very emotional and full of Queensland pride!)

Gosh, you ladies are SO wise. Seriously - you are the BEST!

I'm so glad that so far, everyone with family and friends up there is OK. In fact, this is wonderful news! It is even better that so far there have been no deaths from the catastrophic magnitude of the cyclone. Someone or something was certainly looking out for the people of North Queensland last night, I can tell you.

[As an aside, Hmmmm, now you've all got me thinking - maybe I should ask Grandma to send me some of her secret valium stash in advance for use when the next cyclone hits the Queensland Coastline. It pays to be prepared, right?! I can see it now.. "Cyclone? What Cyclone? I just feel so reeeeellllllaaaaaaxed zzzzzzzz.....";-)]

I've been following too and am thankful for your Granny's safety and lack of damage. When people get that old, they may resist change because they know they will be confused in strange surroundings even though they are fine where things are familiar.

Seriously, the way I'd describe her approach to this cyclone would be to imagine a rebellious teenager's "attitood" being expressed via the medium of a little old lady's body. Made for interesting chats....

I've decided she is an interesting combination of being incredibly silly and incredibly brave all at the same time. Not a bad way to be really, when you are that old!

So sorry I haven't been online. I've needed to wait for news to get through to me and I had to go to work this morning and have only just got home.

I am very happy to report that Grandma is fine! Proserpine escaped the highly destructive winds and her home did not sustain any damage. Phew!

The cheeky (silly) old thing told my dad that when the winds started to get bad last night that she said "Bu**er This! I'm not going to be scared!" so she took two valium [yes you read that correctly] and went to bed rather than staying in the hallway. Next thing she knows it's morning and it's all over.

Glad *she* got some rest! (Sorry for the rude word usage above, but that's what she said to my father on the phone. I found it quite amusing because she is 87 years old and she's usually pretty prim and proper.) ;-)

We are still waiting to hear more about my Aunty/Uncle and Cousin as they live in Townsville where storm surge may affect their home, but as of early this morning everything was ok.

I'm so happy that she is ok. I must confess I'm absolutely exhausted - I couldn't sleep at all last night, I think I've expended so much emotional energy worrying about her that my body has just hit the wall.

For all you other YLF'rs who live in the area, or have family or friends who also went through last night, I am crossing every single part of my body for a safe and happy outcome like my Grandma. Honestly, the things Queenslanders will do in order to tell a good story..... ;-)

Take care everyone! x

This sounds really, really bad/terrifying and I am definitely thinking back to the leadership and personal heads-in-sand around Katrina; glad there is more awareness and evacuation going on than with that. Better too much than too little.

Putting good thoughts out there for the immediate future and aftermath, with an extra thought for stubborn grandmothers....

Oh, Katiepea, how frustrating I'm sending good-luck vibes your grandmother's way.

My sis-in-law has put her house-boat in the mangroves and she, her husband and two kids are all staying in a house built to code that's weathered several cyclones already. Apparently they've got 14 people staying there altogether! My mum-in-law is having kittens but I think my sis-in-law is the most level-headed, no-heroics sort of person and I'm sure she'll do everything the way you're supposed to.

And to think I was worried about TC Bianca hitting our house this weekend just past - what a fizzer. Although now we've got an evacuation plan and a staying plan in case it ever happens for real, so that's something at least.

KTP, my sister, brother, Mum and their families are there too, it's very worrying, I slept really badly last night and have kept my phone with me all day. At this stage it is too late to move anywhere, people really need to to batten down and stay safe - and I'm hoping that your Nan and relatives will be okay. What a stubborn thing she is! My baby neice was still sleeping through the strong winds last time I spoke with my sister.

I think 'afterism' is a Cairns based YLF-er, although I'm sure logging on is not her priority right now.

I'm praying that everyone is ok. Stuff the houses, I really just hope there are no deaths, as there has been quite a bit of notice. I think the Qld premier Hanna Blight is now saying it is too late to relocate now, so those that are left need to stay in their houses. Bloody scary. Praying, for your gran and everyone else up that way.

Oh Kirstie, some big hugs to you - I can't imagine how worried you must be.

I'm so glad you have phone numbers though and have a way of keeping an eye on your Gran - she sounds a lot like my grandparents... If she does decide to get away, she is more than welcome to come South and stay with me - and if there's anything I can do, just let me know - Prossy is only about 6hrs north of here so its not that far if you need anything - I could drop the girls to their grandparents in Mackay and keep going...

The latest update just said people in Cairns and Townsville are no longer allowed to move - they have to stay put, and there are already power outages experienced, so I'm praying the rest of your family is holed up somewhere nice and safe. 10680 people are in the evacuation centres apparently.

In the past hour, the wind has picked up here, so if I'm getting increased winds, they are obviously getting much much worse up there

KP thanks for the update - I was a bit teary reading your post I can feel your emotions and your obvious love for your Grandma. It reminds me of when my family went through the Ash Wednesday bushfires when I was growing up in country Victoria, my Nanna protected her farm with a garden hose and she wouldnt have had it any other way. She is VERY brave and I bet it's a trait that you share with her.

I guess she may in a way feel safer being at home in a familiar setting, rather than going somewhere she doesnt know. You've done all you can physically to help her out and I am sure she knows and appreciates that, all you can do now is to hope that she and everyone else stays safe. Keep in touch.

Sorry, this is epic.... I guess I'm just venting. I hope I'm not boring you. Maybe it makes for interesting reading as to how people react to an impending natural disaster.

I've just literally spoken with Grandma and she is definately staying put. She's had two offers from friends to evacuate to their house but she is determined that she's not going anywhere. She's had a phonecall from "some woman" on Monday who told her to evacuate, but she got cranky by her "scare-mongering".

Grandma lives in Proserpine, so not in the total eye of the cyclone, but still very much in the warning area. Proserpine is slightly inland, so she should be protected from any storm surge.

When on the phone with her, I got the mobile phone numbers and landline numbers of two of her friends (the ones who offered their homes), so that I can contact them after the cyclone. They are younger, so are good people to know who are "on the ground" so to speak. She has also told them that her Granddaughter will probably call them to check on her, so they know my name and that I exist.

I have been trying to boss her on this phone this morning (we've spoken twice) and say "Have your medications packed and ready to go" "You go and put your phone on charge now young lady" "Have your phone book with you" and "You go and put them all in your hall". She's told me that's where she'll go if it gets "bad". Yes, she has said she's going to bed tonight as usual and will only go in the hall if it gets "bad". <sigh>

I've also told her that I think she should be realistic and expect some damage to her home and be prepared for that. I said she should expect her awning outside will be blown off and quite possibly her mesh greenhouse destroyed (because that's what happened last year with Cyclone Ului). If it doesn't, it will be a big bonus.

I've also offered that my husband can fly up there to help her after the cyclone if she needs any heavy duty work done around her house for the clean up.

My Uncle, Aunty and cousins live north of Townsville and we have not heard anything about them. Grandma is concerned because she thinks their houses may possibly be in a lower area, but can't be certain. As she says "they are big enough to look after themselves", so I'm sure that they will go if they are told to go. How their houses will hold up though.........

I think at this point I've tried to do everything I can given the position I'm in. Ultimately I realise that I have to respect my Grandma's wishes. And in a way, I'm quite proud thinking that she must be the gutsiest person I know. 87, living alone and determined to stick it out at home. It is not the decision that I would make in the same situation, but I do respect her right to determine what she considers best for her.

I'm certainly not religious, but I really will be praying for *all* people up north. Please, please, please let them stay safe.

This is so scary, Queensland has copped such a battering in the last month. They're saying that the cyclone has a 500km radius and it could take upto 12 hours to pass over. One of our work offices is up in Townsville and they shut down yesterday and hopefully they have all gotten to safety.

KP hope your Grandma and the rest of your family does get to safety. I dont know what else to say, I know how frustrating it must be to sit and wait to hear how they are. Just sending lots of good vibes your way, please take care.

Oh Kirstie I'm adding your family to my list of people I'm thinking of. Is your Gran in the Mandatory evacuation area? They have the army soldiers up there removing people according to my local news update.

Despite being taken out of the official cyclone watch zone, those of us on the coast here are still being told to prepare and remain alert.

The latest update here was that this is the first Category 5 cyclone to cross our coast since 1918...

I haven't been around much, but logged on tonight just for this thread. We're having massive amounts of snow here - but nothing like this cyclone! You're all in my thoughts.
