Eva, you're my hero!! I'd have likely punched that woman too. Makes me wonder why someone like that would want a pet in the first place?

Maya, I dearly hope Lucy feels better soon, the poor baby.

Another round of kudos to you, Eva. It doesn't matter how many times I hear of stories like this, I'm always incredulous. How anyone could not *love* animals, let alone actively dislike or neglect them, just boggles my mind. McClure also sends a thank you on behalf of his species!
Maya: good luck with Lucy! Poor baby, that sounds like an awful condition. But if it is a UTI, it's highly treatable, thank goodness. I wouldn't rush out to get a fountain if I were you. We got one for the Freddie-cat, who is plagued with UTI-type issues as many male cats are, and he doesn't seem to care about it.

Maya, I'm on the third round of UTI's with my female kitty and starting to really worry. She is fed Wellness wet food exclusively since last year when I discovered the veterinarian recommended food she was on was utter crap. Just like regular doctors, they usually don't know anything about nutrition.

Loulou, thanks for reminding me about fountains- I'm going to dig out my old one today. This round of UTI happened after a couple of unusually hot days, so I'm guessing that might have something to do with it.

Eva- so glad you were there! I can't imagine how furious I'd be if I saw an owner "not get it" after all this. I hope the fine is attention-getting-ly steep!

(So sorry Eva for hijacking your thread...I should have made my own!)

Loulou, I'm glad to hear your kitty is doing better. It's so stressful when pets get sick! I was thinking of getting her one of those fountains but she seems to do fine with her water bowl. She isn't drinking more than usual. The first day she was crying incessantly and kept using the litterbox in 3-5 minute intervals several times during the night. When I checked there were little clumps EVERYWHERE just covering the whole pan. It took me several scoops to get everything out. The next day she was still going frequently but had little to show for it. Today while I was giving her fresh litter she was hovering around me and mewing like she really needed to go. After I was done she went several times again, but there was very little, erm, output. I am not sure what is going on. I'll only know once we get a sample which I don't think I'll be able to get myself, so it will probably require another vet trip.

Maya does she drink a lot? Think that played a part when our cats got it we had 2 who got it every January for 3 Years. We bought a water fountain after we lost 1 cat last year as the vet said drinking lots can help prevent it. They love it all of them are always slurpping from it and touch wood the other male cat who kept getting it has been free of it since x

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm honestly actually not sure if she has a UTI or not. First of all she is a girl and girls don't normally get UTI's, and we feed her a good diet so it can't be a food issue. We did not get to test her because her bladder was empty, so the vet could not get a sample, and I'm having a devil of a time trying to get a sample from her myself. But I'm trying to play it safe and we are giving her the meds anyway. The doc says they are very classic UTI symptoms, and it sure seemed that way at first. It's so hard to tell with cats. I wish she could just tell me!

Thank you, thank you, thank you Eva. I wish there were more people like you! I'm generally a very private person but if I see someone abusing an animal I don't think twice about interfering. Hopefully this owner learned a lesson and won't neglect her dog like that again.
If everybody did what they could, this would be a better place for our furry friends.
So thanks. I will go home and hug my five rescued kitties and put an extra treat on the porch for the stray kitty I'm *trying* to rescue.

Oh that makes me so sad. I now worry about the rest of that dogs lfe with an idiot owner. I have a huge soft spot in my heart for animals as I know you do Eva. Good for you and your husband for saving that poor dogs life. It just makes me want to cry thinking of that dog baking in the car with a fur coat on, and the woman still did not get it.
Thankfully you got in her face and gave her a good talking too. She needed it.
I hope it made sense to her finally.

Maya so glad your kitty ok Is UTI urinary tract something? If it is a word of warning to male cat owners if they get this you need to get them to vets URGENTLY we lost one of ours last year to urinary tract disorder :-(

I can't believe people would do that to a dog they don't deserve to own one!

Oh gosh, that is just infuriating. Thank goodness you were there and took action. I think some Northwesterners get used to mild temperatures and forget how dangerous summer heat (or winter cold) can be for pets, especially in cars. I also hate it when people leave dogs chained up in truck beds in parking lots, especially when it's raining.

I've also heard of a couple recent instances (most recently today in southern California) where cars were stolen with kids inside because a parent left the car running to do a quick errand. Not a good idea.

What a happy ending to a sad story. I can't believe someone would leave a dog locked in a car with no windows open. That dog is so lucky you came by and hopefully the owner will learn something for the experience!

Another reason never to leave your dog in the car is that it can get stolen! After reading about a family here in Seattle who had their dog stolen from a locked car we try to always keep an eye on our dog if she has to stay in the car for any amount of time. Scary stuff.

Eva, I totally understand your anger. It's justified. I'm sure anyone would get mad over seeing a child like that, so it shouldn't be different for an animal.

Taylor, I know all about the evils of the pet food industry. I feed my kitty Wellness wet food. It's grain free and made with human grade meat. She does get a tiny bit of dry food from Wellness, but it's more like a snack than a meal and it is also grain free. When she has to do something unpleasant like take medicine or go on her carrier, she gets Innova treats. It costs a pretty penny but I will not compromise when it comes to her health and well being. I'll sooner cut back on shopping than cut back on kitty things

OMG, this is just the kind of thing that infuriates the #$%&* out of me. BLESS you for going above and beyond, and quite possibly saving the life of a helpless animal.

Maya, knowing how you love your kittie, me too. I read an article several years ago stating that cat food(dry) is sooo unhealthy for our cats because they are not supposed to eat carbos. They are carnivores and their bodies are designed to digest protien only, like birds ,fish,mice.. (bones too). This is why they have such a rise in UTI's , diabetes, and other health issues, The kidney's and livers of cat's cannot tolerate too much dry food, it dehydrates them severly, and it causes UTI"s We are unknowingly shaving years off their lives with dry food

I am not sure what you feed your kittie, and this is just for general knowledge re: our pets, but it stated we should feed our animals..cats and DOGS as close to *what is natural for them to eat*

We try to do that for our kitties:)..I hope she feels better soon.

I was furious! I was very forceful with the women (in front the the AC officer) stating that it was not okay, the dog was clearly lock in way to long and her behavior was unacceptable. I had to stop myself from getting to much in the woman's face - Angie, I'm sure you could picture me. The officer took her and the dog to the shade and had a long discussion with her.

Oh bless your heart Eva. Irresponsible pet owners make me SO angry. I used to watch Animal Cops on Animal Planet every day even though it infuriated me (but seeing all the animals get new loving homes made it worth watching). Lucky for him a wonderful person like you was there to look out for him! 25 minutes in a hot car with no ventilation or water and a heavy fur coat? Poor poor baby.

This is also OT but I had a scare this weekend with my kitty. Took her to the vet yesterday and it turns out she probably has a UTI Luckily it's not serious since I brought her in immediately but I can't STAND seeing her so uncomfortable and distressed I have no idea how anyone could tolerate their pet being in any kind of pain. I want my kitty to be blissful every moment of every day!

I know this is off topic, but with the warm summer weather, I thought it was worth mentioning. My husband and I took our dogs to the park last week on a beautiful 80+ degree day. As we pulled into the parking lot, we saw that the car next to us had a yellow lab locked in the car with the non tinted windows rolled all the way up. He was already panting heavily. We called animal control and waited 20 minutes for them to show up - we were ready to break the window if he fell unconscious. The AC officers were much more calm than I. They managed to get the owners cell phone number and contact her. She came running to the car saying she wasn't gone long (it was over 25 minutes since we were there!) and her dog was fine. I really don't think she would have come back then if the officers hadn't called her. She had quite a few excuses. The dog drank a bunch of water - that we supplied because the owner didn't have any.

The good news is that the dog was going to be fine and I think the owner was charged (I'm not sure if she ever got it). We eventually got to enjoy our picnic with our dogs. So give your pets a hug and watch out for them (and others) in hot weather.
