I highly recommend visiting a good specialized local running store. A good one will put you on a treadmill and watch your stride to see how your foot lands.

My arches are normal and I slightly pronate, and Brooks have been great for me. I go a full size up from my normal shoe size, and I have not had any problems with my feet.

I'm another Saucony wearer. I ran for almost 25 years. During those years, I tried Nike, some other one I can't recall, and then Saucony. Saucony was the one that gave me the extra toebox room. I have a slightly wide foot, and always wore my regular size. The extreme cushy, hugging feel does settle down as they get worn in.

In the past 10 years, I've tried on some saucony sytles that dont' seem to accomodate my toes/width like I'm used to, then I move on to another style. I don't order online because of this very reason - they change up styles by the time I need a new pair :-(

What part of the shoes was irritating your toes -- too tight? too much room for rubbing? Make sure you know.

I have to disagree with Citygirl here in the sizing up a whole size. I wear my normal shoe size, 7.5, in both my walking Reebok's and my running Asics. You *may* have to, but you may not. As always, try the shoe on for fit.

I wear Saucony's for cushion. I have normal arches so can wear all types of shoes, with our without cushion. You should always size up a whole size when running. Not sure about walking though.

Thanks everyone! Looks like from the varied responses, I just need to get myself into a store and start trying on ... Was hoping to avoid this and order them online (with hopes of a perfect fit, ha!)

I have asics and I ended up with 2 sizes bigger than my normal size. I would go to a different specialty shoe store and try on a ton of shoes. I was told to have a thumb width of extra room at the big toe to allow for swelling. Good luck!

I've got high arches, stubby wide feet, and I overpronate. I wear Brooks. All the latest ones come in funky neon colors.

Boy, it's such a personal thing - since feet are all so different. I wear Asics. They fit my foot shape well and I've never had an issue with them. For work waitressing and bartending I've always worn Reebok DMXs. Again, it may just be how they fit on my feet. I have very high arches and a narrow heel.

I'm not a runner, but a walker. Last spring I went to a special shoe store and was fitted with Mizuno Wave running shoes. Went up a whole size. Then walked a LOT this spring, only to discover two of my toenails on each foot turned black and they fell off! Just in time for summer sandals...Went to dermatologist and he said my shoes were the problem. Anyone have experience with some good running shoes?
