I wear my wedding band first and engagement ring second on the same finger, only because that is the way they are most comfortable. I even remember switching them around right after the wedding ceremony and before the reception, just for the comfort. On that day you place the ER on your right hand so that your left hand is "free" to receive the wedding band. After the wedding you then place the ER over the wedding band. That is why the band ends up closer to the wrist. But many women just wear their band (especially if it has stones) on the left hand and leave the ER on their right hand. Some "sets" combine the rings.
