julijuli is right - you want the one in the compact, and not the loose powder. Will want a kabuki or other type of blending brush for applying. I did buy the Jane Iredale "Handi" brush with my compact as well.

Another really good brush is this one from Makeup For Ever:

http://www.sephora.com/browse/.....id=P217908

That MUFE kabuki brush is my favourite brush of all time.

Seconding the recommendation for Jane Iredale. I'm 50 (!) and I don't get the powder in creases look from this makeup. I have had breakouts with other makeup and this stuff is amazing. My only caveat is that you must use the pressed powder and the 'kabuki' brush - I found that the loose powder DID give me that 'older' look.

Good luck!

This stuff is very expensive, but it's excellent:

http://janeiredale.com/bases_pp.html

If you spriz one of these on afterwards, you don't get the "cakey" effect:

http://janeiredale.com/touch_d.html

http://janeiredale.com/touch_b.html

I'm not 100% sure I'd buy it again (due to the cost), but my hair stylist put this stuff on me a couple of times after doing my hair, and I really liked it, so I went and bought the compact pressed powder (though not the spritz). Just throwing it out there in case you wanted to revisit the idea of 'mineral' makeup. I like this a lot better than BE (on me), but once again - it's pricey. I'm hoping my compact lasts a long, long time You can use a tinted moisturizer first, and then buff on the Jane Iredale powder - it looks beautiful and it's easy on the skin.

editing to add: you'd want to try this out a few times to see if you like it before buying - so it'd be worth it to find out if your hair salon or local salon carries it and have them apply it on you a few times first.

Tara - my mom (in her mid 50s) uses mineral powder foundation. It took a while of experimenting before she found a color that naturally blended with her skin and did not look cakey. It can vary a lot between brands. Even with Bare Escentuals, the original Fairly Light shade is a GREAT match on my face, but the matte version of the same shade looks quite cakey and fake.

Mm. How have you applied it? Do you put on anything underneath? Moisturizer underneath is definitely one of my tricks.

What mineral foundations have you tried? The brands are definitely different.

I'm not sure about using a mineral (powder) foundation on "maturing" skin. Sometimes I feel it can look dry and cakey and settle in the fine lines. Is that my only option? Am I applying it wrong?

Hi Tarzy --

I have mild rosacea and as of hmmm, 3 years ago I'm a big fan of the Alima Pure mineral makeup line; it's reduced my inflammation and knock wood I'm pretty breakout-free these days.

[They participate in the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database and, while made in the US, have met some European standards for natural cosmetics.]

http://www.alimapure.com/

My skin tends towards the dry so I use a heavy-duty natural moisturizer from a health food store with added rose oil, then the mineral foundation (and blush when I can be bothered).

I have a hard time with even super-gentle natural exfoliants, so about a year ago I sucked it up and bought a Clarisonic Mia (discounted via one of the skin e-stores) + their most delicate brush head about a year ago. BIG difference in the appearance of my pores. Might be worth exploring!

Good luck with the hunt....

Hmm. Angela, I can't remember because I've been using it for 5 years. I think it took a few months. My skin is quite sensitive, though, and I did not react negatively when I first started using it, and it simply started breaking out a lot less often.

I'm happy to share what has REALLY turned around my skin more recently, though - I learned that I was over-drying it with harsh cleansers. So here's what I use now:
Night: put jojoba oil on a cotton pad and wipe makeup off face, then rub excess oil into skin to moisturize. Then spot-treat T-zone and any trouble spots (blackheads or pending breakouts) with tea tree oil - after experimentation I use the tea tree oil straight, but it's recommended to dilute it.
Morning - I wash with Mychelle Honeydew cleanser while I'm in the shower, massaging my skin with my hands (no towels, because the aesthetician who did my facial said I was rubbing too hard and stressing my skin.) When I'm out of the shower, I use L'Occitane lotion on the dry spots of my face (mainly my cheeks.) During summer I apply sunscreen all over. (I don't do this during the rest of the year because we don't get much daylight and my makeup has SPF in it.)
When I'm having a lot of breakouts - once a month - I will use an Aveda clay masque, and I'll sometimes spot-treat pimples with a dot of clay.
A couple times a week I use an Aveda botanical exfoliant on a cotton pad to cleanse my pores.
That's it. Super easy, and my skin is loving it.

Thank you SO much for the sweet compliment. There's still a big part of me that is the teen with super-pimply skin, so it's a pleasant surprise to hear that my skin is looking well these days.

Off topic, but Paula's Choice is actually based very near to me (at home) and was a client of a company I used to work for. I actually have not tried their products yet, though I've heard fabulous things about them.

Paula's Choice super antioxidant serum (as "moisturizer")

Neutrogena ultra dry touch sunscreen SPF 30 (for sunscreen, particularly on days when I will be outside)

Almay Anti Aging Smart Shade foundation (SPF 20)- acts as a great daily foundation and additional sun protection

It really depends what clogs your pores/breaks you out. I suspect titanium dioxide sunscreen does it to me. So I use a foundation without sunscreen (Nars Sheer Glow) with my Paula's Choice SPF moisturiser underneath.

Have you checked out Beautypedia and Makeupalley? My bible websites when it comes to determining this sort of thing.

love neutrogena healthy skin enhancer--tinted moisturizer with spf15. it's really sheer and light. it evens out my skin about 90%, but not completely. i dust with t leclerc powder in "natural" for more complete coverage and to set the moisturizer. this combo lasts all day--no blemishes.

in the summer, i add neutrogena dry touch sunblock.

I use Baviphat Magic Girls BB cream - it comes in an oily skin formula as well as a dry skin formula. Works as my sunscreen and foundation, and does not aggravate my cystic acne prone skin. It's also one of the few BB creams that doesn't seem to have skin lightening agents in it.

I also use ELF Mineral foundation, but that is a powder (clearly). The plus side is that it's cheap.
