Bella, I am very interested in this topic but I don't have any magical solutions! I do find that my life runs so much more smoothly when I meal plan and do a weekly shop. I also find when I meal plan and do a weekly shop I can prepare a meal quicker then the time it would take to get take away (but obviously you have to have the time to plan and shop).

The Fresh 20 website looks interesting but would probably be opposite seasons to we are. The Women's Day monthly plan also looks good to me!

Thank you very much for your recommendations. There is so much information out there about this topic that quite frankly it is overwhelming. These suggestions give me a great point of start. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

I'm a big fan of the app allrecipes on my ipod touch. It lets you search for recipes in various ways (time to prepare, main ingredient etc). Especially with the reviews that go with each recipe, I've found some easy to prepare, tasty dishes. I'm not much of a cook and recipes with long lists of ingredients make my eyes glaze over.

Edit to add: I cook 3 meals (double sized) on the weekend, plus a breakfast dish. During the week it's reheat and eat. With one day ordering out for hubby and I.

I just read this today:
http://www.styleyourlifeblog.c.....essed.html

Personally, I'm not super organized. However, I do find that if I have a rough system for meals, things go smoother. On Mondays I make a red meat based dinner, Wednesdays a fish based dinner and Saturdays are chicken dinner nights. (For some reason all my chicken recipies take longer than other meats to make, so Saturdays allow me more time to cook.) Tue, Thur and Sunday nights are leftovers and we go out to eat on Friday nights before we go to the grocery store and Sundays for lunch after church.

I second the menu plan.

I have an A4 photo frame with a print out in listing the days of the week.

I use a whiteboard marker each week to write down what we are having. I then do my shopping list & get everything I need in one shop.

I know spending an hour or so doing groceries is boring but it's better than 5 or 6 20 min trips to the supermarket after work.

The trick is to only put things on the list you know you will have time for that week, so if I'm planning a long run one day i will plan an easy dinenr like Gazpacho or Chicken Spaghetti.

A menu plan also means no complaining. A simple, "I asked you about it when I did he menu." tends to stop him in his tracks (He's prety good but every now & thenI do dinner without any meat - this offends his world order).

When I went back to work after having my kids I would literally be crying at 6:30 pm every night. My kids were cranky, tired and starving. I never had the right ingredients for things I wanted to cook. Everything I cooked before took so long. My husband was super picky and complained about everything I proposed, so we would be negotiating or even fighting about it every night.

A friend told me that she and her family would plan a month's worth of menus in advance so everyone got a say in what they had for dinner, she always had a plan and always had the right ingredients on hand.... I thought she was nuts. How could you plan an entire month of dinners?! She gave me access to her google calendar meal schedule and I started plugging along with her. What do you know, it's not so hard and it works!! This really saved my life. I don't cook like this right now, but I did for 6-8 months. Just getting in the habit of planning and organizing entire meals instead of buying random things at the supermarket changed my life.

I love Women's Day month of menus:

http://www.womansday.com/Artic.....h-of-Menus!.html

They are all really simple recipes that are quick and have few ingredients. I never follow them day by day but it helps me stay organized. I know a lot of these are meat based, but I find it easy to swap out a few ingredients to tailor it to something my family would prefer to eat.

For day to day cooking, I've switched to focusing more on the ingredients than the recipe. We buy produce that is in season and local, keep a decent stock of cooking staples (onions, garlic, oils and spices, rice, quinoa, pasta, etc), and then search the web for recipes based on the key ingredients I want to use, and sort through choices to decide what to make. Our cookbooks go unused. We try to get as much as possible through our CSA and farmers' market, and it keeps us creative.

Some things we make in bulk and store include chili, curry, and all sorts of stews. I made this chili the other day: http://www.lifeaftercollege.or.....-can-cook/ and will be making this stew soon because we got a giant cushaw squash in our CSA share: http://delightsanddelectables......chickpeas/

I know there are several blogs dedicated to meals that can be made in bulk and stored, but I don't know of any off hand.

I know flylady is happy about her friend Leanne at http://savingdinner.com/ it is mostly meat based, but she does give subsitutions for vegetarian and vergetarian menus. You can get a free example so you can see if it would work for you. She has special editions for the freezer.

I realized that hubby and I have been too busy to cook recently. We are eating out a lot or ordering take-out. It is hurting our budget and our health. I am looking into those meal plans that allow you to prep/cook/freeze once and eat for the next two weeks/a month. Do you have any experience with those? Can you recommend a good plan/website/cookbook? We are more interested in plans that are heavy on vegetables, beans, grains than on meat products.
Thank you!
