MaryK -- I do know that when the Orthodox say "modest," they mean modest. There is a Jewish day school near where I live and when we see the girls, the skirts of their uniforms are midway between the knee and the ankle, with blouse sleeves below the elbow.

A very far cry from Catholic-school uniforms, where the skirts could often reasonably be classed as minis.

Black should be totally fine. I usually aim to cover elbows, knees, and collarbone, but am not always successful. You should be turned out perfectly!

April: as soon as I read MaryK's invite and your first paragraph, it reminded me of a Hindu wedding, and then you went on to say that yourself There are actually a lot of similarities between Hindu and Jewish traditions. Though to clarify, not all Hindu weddings are long, some can be as short as 10 minutes.

Thank you so much, ladies! That's what I thought but it's nice to have confirmation from people who know!

The invitation asked the guests to "please dress modestly." Yesterday I went to the consignment store and found a lovely black knee-length sheath dress with matching covered-up-to-the-neck-and-below-the-elbows jacket, so I'm wearing that. I'm assuming it's okay to wear black?

MaryK, when I was first married and first attending traditional Jewish events, I was surprised at a.) how long they went on, and b.) how no one was actually expected to attend the entire event. It seemed like everything had a long religious service beforehand that people might or might not come for, followed by the main event. People wandered in and out, little kids ran around, and it was all very different from the traditions I'd grown up with (Catholic: get there on time, sit down, be quiet, stay put until the end.)

Many years later, I attended a traditional Hindu wedding and was surprised by the same things: it went on for hours -- days, actually, though that part was mainly for family -- people wandered in and out, and little kids ran around.

I think Dashrashi described it just right.

What are you wearing?

It literally means "receiving of faces"--in my experience, it is a time when the bride sits on a big chair saying psalms, and the (female) guests arrive and congratulate her. I'd feel perfectly comfortable (if the wedding is not for a close friend or family member) showing up around 6 or so. (There is a fair amount of downtime.)

I just did a google search and came up with this:
http://www.jewishweddingnetwor.....alat-panim

I sort of liken it to a viewing before a funeral, or cocktails before a dinner. I would get there with enough time to greet the couple, but not at the very beginning.

Please pardon my ignorance...

I'm invited to the wedding of one of my grad school classmates on Sunday. The invitation reads:

Kabalat Panim at five o'clock
Chuppah at half past six o'clock
Dinner following Chuppah

The Chuppah is the wedding ceremony, right? What is "Kabalat Panim?" Are the guests supposed to show up at five? 6:30? Some time in between?

Inquiring minds want to know...
