Texstyle, while Lucy would say a big YAY to that, maybe down the line in a few years, and that's a big maybe. We have 2 rats already who are getting older, and Lucy is so new to our lives, that I don't think a second dog would be practical with both of us working. (There's the difficulty of training 2 dogs at once, and the challenge of bussing and having 2 dogs in the workplace, finding and paying for care for 2 dogs while we are away, vet visits, etc., taking 2 dogs out for walks-we are in an apartment so our yard is shared-etc.)
She actually gets a lot of socialization while we are out and about-in our building in the yard, out to walks or dog parks, at work, visiting friends with dogs-and really loves it when they will play with her. She could be overwhelming to a shyer, older, or non- playful dog.
Lucy is very, very friendly and well adjusted for a rescue dog-I think her last home was likely a happy one, but I definitely think it spooked her to be left. She's very affectionate and attached, and I can't imagine how sad she would have been when her original owners didn't return for her.
We are making gains in her trusting us to come back through repetition- she's not nervous in familiar "home base" settings like the office or our home where she's been there a lot, and seen us leave frequently and for longer stretches of time. (For example, the first few days I brought her to work, I left her only for MY restroom breaks; now, if I or the team has to leave for an 1.5 hour meeting, she is sad not to have company but not anxious, and just snoozes under my desk. We'll just have to repeat the process in other settings-doggy day care, friend and family homes, in our home with other people-until she is confident that she's not going to be "dumped" again.

What a cutie! I can't help but wonder if you've considered adding a friend to the family for her? A friend of mine had a shelter dog who was very traumatized and once she got a "friend" she was the sweetest dog ever and they SO enjoy each other. Dogs are pack animals, right? Says the person who does not even have a dog but loves to visit with other people's dogs.

Puppy!!! I'm making cooing noises at my screen, hehe. Those photos are SO cute & I loved reading about her. I'm so glad she's fit so well into your life & I hope that your continued training pays off with less barking at work soon. I also have a cuddly, closely bonded rescue dog who benefitted enormously from positive reinforcement training!

Thank you for the encouragement. She has such a sweet personality. She's a cuddly, affectionate little girl, and yes, consistency is SO key. She's really quick to pick up on cues, and I think she's training us as much as we are to her. (I trained my dogs as a kid, but it was more traditional training rather than positive reinforcement/clicker training that we are doing now, so I have as much to learn as she does.) She is so willing to work hard, and it's fun to see her having such a great time.

We are so besotted with Lucy, our recent beagle/basset adoptee. She had some training before us (she sits beautifully) but is now SO responsive with positive reinforcement based training. She's a smart dog and the star of the class; I'm a proud parent who is happy to hear other people also think that her "kid" is sweet and quick to learn.

We have done pretty well in the past few weeks adapting to her coming to work on days when I'm not in meetings (most days.) 90% of the time she is mellow and quiet. She REALLY loves other dogs; unfortunately she is a little over-eager and playful, so we are working on rewarding her for waiting and letting other dogs come to her, and she's starting to learn to back off from other dogs who aren't a fan of her enthusiasm. There are some dogs at our apartment that play well with her, and I think we are going to start looking into a small dog play group at our training school.

The biggest struggle has been attention barking at work-barking to attract play is the only time she gets vocal (and thankfully it's rate.) At home we can simply walk out of the room and the barking stops, which is what our instructor wants us to do. At work, I'm in a room with other people and therefore I can't walk out easily, and need to put a stop to the barking more quickly. I'm wary of getting into the negative reinforcement/escalation cycle by scolding her or spraying with water bottles; not what we want. I try to reward her when she *is* being quiet, which is a lot of the time; short spurts of games or clicker training and walks throughout the day, puzzle toys with her kibble in it, chew toys. But if she starts to bark it's hard to de-escalate and frustrating as I don't want to annoy/distract coworkers. She's starting to view her bed/mat as a calm space and gets rewarded when she sits or lays down on it, so that's a start. Most days go ok at work; she's much more happy and tired when we get home.

I do think there's a bit of trauma from being left at the shelter. She is already very attached to B. and I; she likes being around other people but we have seen her get quite anxious when one of us leaves and she's in an unfamiliar place. At home and at the office she's fine (though not thrilled about being left alone) if we need to leave her; but in unfamiliar places, she gets very upset (shutting down and becoming super reserved for a while, or anxiously trying to see where we have gone) like she fears being left somewhere new and us not coming back.
We have a vacation planned without her in November, so before then, we will need to carefully get her used to whoever will watch her, making sure she knows it's a safe place and that we will come back.

These photos show various sides of our sweet, playful pup. We love her so. I can't describe how great it is to have a dog in our lives again.
