Well, people can't really afford to live here. Professionals with good - and I mean GOOD - jobs have to have roommates. Every room in a place is turned into a bedroom. There's a developer who wants to develop "mini units" - 220 sq feet - as a solution, and people are bickering about it. Because what's going to happen is those closets will shoot up in price. You'll have a worse situation, because people will be cramming in as roommates in those too.

Anyways, I pick up a Vogue or a T&C and expect to see $25K, one of a kind works of art in ball gown form. But it feels like even "every day dressing" magazines feature pretty big prices as run-of-the-mill.

I think y'all are right: it's a way of shifting the paradigm. The "low" price has seriously gone up. It's a smart marketing move in many ways. However, it feels like an ultimately unhealthy shift to me.

I agree that the $$$ is crazy. Hopefully most everyone who reads them think the same thing, and if you have $10,000 to pay for a watch or coat, you probably aren't reading the magazine to get the ideas.

This year for the first time I've bought a number of copies of InStyle and some other fashion magazines --not that I've never bought fashion mag's before, but I really perused these intentionally to compare to my wardrobe items, to see what looks I thought would work on me, what I already like that miraculously seems to be in style--trying to be much more analytical on what kinds of this and that keep an outfit looking up to date.

But the prices--of course I know they're all just a series of ads, but--8k purses, 3k coats, $500 top, 2k watch, etc. Yes, I still can identify the "look" and shop it at a lower price point, but it almost makes me ill.

I was in the market for a kind of handbag-briefcase-tote and saw an ad in the back pages of one of these magazines. That one looks perfect! I thought. There was enough info to Google up and lo and behold--$1,100 or some such. Hmmm!

My favorite sections are often those high vs. low price options that you describe, and I agree that both "high" and "low" seem to be getting higher. I think only the magazines like maybe Family Circle or similar, which only have a page or 2 of fashion per issue, still show options from Target and Gap and Penneys and so forth.

What seems ironic to me now is that I'm at an age and income where I can certainly buy "investment" pieces if I want to, but I'm at the same time more aware that items become tiresome sooner that I might have thought, and I have never had any label or "status"-envy at all-( I do swoon over beautiful fabrics and fit, at any price) and I'm at the age where I may change jobs or semi-retire over the next 5-10 years and so could experience a shift in wardrobe focus, wants or needs, so there aren't too many items of clothing that seem worth even $500 ( maybe the perfect blazer, or outerwear but again, I'm wondering if I'll still be in love 5 years from now) to me, let alone thousands. Now, I do see a big difference between improving my past habits of buying multiple semi-useful 19.99 TJMaxx items/mistakes vs walking out of a department or specialty store paying full price for something that fit great and I really love.

"How do people afford the SF Bay area?"

When I was a student I shared a one bedroom flat (with a teeny 3/4 bath wedged into a closet and duct tape holding the kitchen carpet together) with 3 guys. Every now and then we had to shoo homeless folks out of the backyard.

Back on topic - those prices are outrageous.

Wow...I still can't get over the rent....who can afford to live there?

Anyway, your post made me think of how sometimes in magazines they show a clothing piece or whatever, and most have the Designer and price beside them, but once in a while they say "price upon request'.....lol, you know that's no $100 blouse!

It's a way of shifting the paradigm - "Wow, I can't have that $4,000 purse, so $650 is a bargain!" Those splurge/steal things irritate me too, and also the "worth the money!".

I'm in the SF Bay Area. Yeah, I thought I'd avoid craziness like paying $300 K to buy a large room by staying at home. Man plans, god laughs!

Wow! No a $400 blouse is not middle of the road! And OMG where do you live that rent is that high? NY?

I hate overpaying too... But I try to buy quality when I splurge...and I try to keep my splurges to a minimum.

I don't know, like sniffles that have turned into a full-blown cold, I find myself down with price tag fatigue. I guess I just want to know, am I wrong? Am I being too judgmental? Am I a spoiled Westerner, unused to paying for the real value of things?

I'm browsing through my fashion mags for the month, perusing the "splurge v. steal" articles... $129 is a steal and $400 is normal...

...I would and have paid $$$$ for an article of fashion, but this makes me feel tired, the thought of a $400 blouse being middle-of-the road. Perhaps it doesn't help that I heard, yesterday, rent for a two bedroom apartment in the city is $4000 a month. Anyways, I don't like the feeling.
