You broke the habit early Kari! That counts for something. I dressed horribly during high school and my first year of college. There were definitely some novelty sweats in my closet during those troubling times, including a snoopy hoodie and pants.

It is sad, Ele! Especially when the menu explicitly calls it "Fondue for two."

I was going to leave this thread alone, but now that it's back up to the top, I'll comment again. I agree with Kari that this is a sad statement on Americans.
What makes it so sad to me is that these aren't just people who "don't know" how to dress.... these are...

1) people who are seeking attention (why else would you wear some of those outlandish get ups or downright vulgar t-shirts?) and then to post their pic on the web is just feeding that desire for attention and encouraging the "I want to be the center of attention" mentality

2) people who are being rebellious and couldn't give a rat's patootie whether or not they are offending or being disrespectful to the rest of society

3) girls who are obviously so wounded and have such little self-respect that they walk around exposing every inch of their bodies to the world.

I could care less if little old ladies walk around with their pants too short or a bad wig. You wouldn't catch me in a decorated sweatshirt or a t-shirt adorned with my grandkids handprints, but some ladies really get a kick out of that sort of thing and I need to be gracious enough to allow them that small joy in life.

But when our country (and world for that matter) is full of people who are disrespectful and wounded to the point of zero self-respect, that breaks my heart. And then the rest of us in the world use these people for our entertainment-- just think of all of the reality TV and gossip magazines that we are so enamored with as a culture.

So yes, it is truly a very sad commentary on the state of our culture ;-(

People of WalMart makes me very sad for America...

Then again, I don't have a ton of room to talk. When I was a senior in high school a sizeable chunk of seniors, myself included, would regularly wear sweatpants, pajama bottoms, or scrub pants to class. I cringe to think of it.

The guys who created the site aren't targeting Walmart. Walmart just makes an easy target, if that makes sense. It's a national chain, the largest retailer in America, and it attracts a huge amount of customers every day...and by extension, a whole lot of gnarly looking people.

I avoid Walmart at all cost but the few times I have been there, I don't think I have ever seen anyone dressed THIS badly though. I think it could be a regional thing, since I live in a relatively well-to-do area of NJ (the kind where the women wear a full face of makeup and designer bag with their Juicy Couture tracksuits...so well-to-do doesn't necessarily = well dressed, I assure you).

A month ago I went with a friend for lunch at a cute little restaurant in NYC and a woman came in by herself wearing furry house slippers. She was eating her fondue by herself, which is just the saddest thing in the world. I wondered if maybe someone would have shared that fondue with her if she didn't insist on wearing furry house slippers in a nice restaurant.

I know, I'm so mean.

Absolutely! I don't think it's Walmart-specific. And, when i'm in the US, I LOVE to shop at Walmart; there are plenty of neatly-dressed people hanging out in the aisles, too. I just think someone had a fun idea to take photos of crazy dressers at Walmarts, but it could have just as easily been at baseball games, in McDonalds, at the local mall, or of folks walking their dogs.

My answer was a resounding NO! Neither of us goes out without being fully dressed in non-gear clothes. In fact, I always tease him because he won't go out of the house without having his shirt tucked in and a belt on. He only wears t-shirts if he's working outside or exercising or something.

I don't know why, but I always feel bad about laughing... A lot of my friends subscribe to that site, and I just can't do it.
I think I just feel bad because there's a stereotype of Wal*Mart shoppers and workers, and since my Dad works there, it just leaves a pit in my stomach.
Some people really are ridiculous, but some people just don't know or don't have access to resources like we do.

I think even more offensive than some of the clothing (if you can call it that) choices are some of the bumper stickers. Do I really want to read some of that while sitting at a stop light? absolutely not- nor do I need my children to read that either! that just makes me downright angry

Setting aside the fact that their pictures were taking without their permission, I have to wonder the thought proccess (if any) that these people had in choosing the attire that they are wearing.

Interesting point Queenie...they ARE in public. Are we really safe anywhere anymore? I did have a young guy take a photo of me with his phone at Target a couple years ago. (He then proceeded to laugh. Not sure what the joke was.) I don't know what I was wearing, it probably wasn't fab but it certainly wasn't worthy of the Walmart website. It made me feel pretty violated and vulnerable so I guess I'm on the other side of this.
That said...Love the umbrella! I have seen birds in our big box grocery store so I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!

Oh my gosh Louise - that article had me laughing so hard that my office mates came to see what was wrong with me!

I love the woman who said "she had been 'popping in for a pack of fags,' but if she had been doing a full shop 'then we obviously would have gone in clothed'"

Because it doesn't count as being in public if you are only buying cigs? Oh my gosh!!!

What truly horrified me about that story is that she is a SAHM of two boys. What sort of role model is that for your children? The very idea that she (and apparently others) does not understand why it is inappropriate to shop in nightwear and SLIPPERS just astounds me!!!

I admit that I clicked on the peopleofwalmart site, but alas, it is blocked for me at work. :-/

Sorry but these people deserve to be ridiculed! The way they dress isn't just ugly or boring--it's disrespectful and sometimes even offensive. It's not a classist statement either. You can at the very minimum look decent even if you are poor. Maybe if these people see themselves on this site they'll wise up and stop being so gross. When all else fails, shame and humiliation often do the trick. Yes, I have a vicious streak.

I know we've had discussions here about the way some people dress extremely casually/ sloppily in places like university classrooms and airports. I found this website that I thought might make some of you giggle - actual photos taken OF Walmart customers BY other Walmart customers (thank goodness for cell phone cameras, which allow us to snap surreptitiously, non?). Some of these folks take "dressing down" to an entirely new level, don't you think?
