I guess I'm late, not to make things difficult but I have been to Paris and Rome and it seems Rome would be the logical city to visit choosing between the two. Rome is an easy train ride to Venice which would be relaxing and a chance to see the countryside in between.

We visited Rome then took a train to Florence then to Venice then took an overnight train to Paris. Both cities are worth a week or more to visit but any time you have will be a treasure of memories. Have fun and good luck.

Not quite booked yet, but Paris it is The way the flights work, Paris works out to be a bit better than Rome.

So I'll get two full days in Paris on the way to Venice, and another two full days in Paris on the way back. It's not really a "week in Paris", but it *is* something a bit different than all the other places I'll be visiting during the cruise itself. The Paris itinerary also includes an extra night in Venice as well.

Really want to see Rome too, just that the flights/arrival times are a bit more difficult. London is also difficult - arrive at Heathrow, leave for Venice from a different airport/terminal etc.

Very excited! Thank you *all* so much for your great advice, I really do appreciate it. I will get to Rome one of these days - it's just that the Paris itinerary works beautifully with my overall travel plans. All non-stop flights - super easy.

So the deal is - fly into Paris, hang out for 2.5 days, then whip over to Venice, spend the night - get on the cruise the next morning - and the cruise ship doesn't leave port until the next night after that. Post cruise - short flight to Paris - get there at a reasonable time - spend the rest of that day in Paris, then two more full days in Paris before flying back to the US on the morning of day three in Paris.

I'm very glad I asked here at YLF about this - sounds like Rome was a *great* idea, but in the end, once we tried to put all the flights together, Rome didn't work out quite as well as Paris did. The price was about the same (which is why I asked in the first place), but Paris actually 'works better' (timing and ease) for this particular trip - something I didn't know when I posted this question in the first place.

I couldn't have done this without you - thank you! I really appreciate all of the "in the know" advice that YLF'ers had to offer.

I still have nothing to wear though Expect some frantic posts about comfortable shoes and what kind of jacket to take (not blazers, but a rain jacket just in case), coming soon to a YLF theatre near you.

Thanks again everyone

Don't have time to read all the replies, but I have been pondering this one ever since you posted the question a few days ago. See, YLF is on my mind all the time :-)

I loved Rome - I've been there once and can't wait to go back, but my answer to this dilemma would be Paris, simply because it's a nice opportunity to see and experience another different culture and environment. Even more so after seeing your itinerary - see as much as possible :-)

But, definitely plan in advance what you want to see - it is overwhelming in every sense. Better see and enjoy two things, than run around to see 10 and feel overtired.

So exciting!

Wow, what a great cruise! I have a friend who did a somewhat similar one last year and loved it.

My vote? Paris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You get the idea, right? I haven't been to Rome, but I love Paris! My husband gets very romantic in Paris. I'm sure you recognize that it is just for a couple of days and that you won't be able to do everything, but you will drink in the experience of Paris even if all you do is see the Eiffel Tower and eat and drink wine the rest of the time. You will want to go back!

Oh and I'm with Angie, the Marais would be a good place to stay. It doesn't seem as "big city" ther as much of the rest of the city. The Rue Cler area is quaint, although both it and Montparnasse are a touch further out from the main metro line. I can't remember what months you mentioned, but be sure to take a trench coat. I was there in June and wore it every day.

Thanks again everyone!! Laughing here, at shabbychick's comment about when we're leaving.

Nothing's booked yet (flights I mean), but the cruise is booked. Florence sounds amazing, but I am not sure if it's going to be one of those major cities that I can get to easily ...I will look though, just in case!

My husband has been promising to take me to Paris for a while now, but I wasn't thinking just a couple of days en route to Venice (yes, I know...picky, picky picky...). That said - I might just go for it anyway. We'll see. It's just as easy to get to Rome as it is to Paris from here - and we're looking at least a couple of nights, before jumping on another plane to Venice for the cruise itself.

It does sort of sound like Paris is winning, even if I can only spend a couple of days. We'll end up deciding either this weekend or next.

Thank you for chiming in Angie! If it's Paris, I will be sure to plan accordingly.

....

editing to add - cruise stops...but I might come back and edit them out in a few days, just because I'm a bit fussy about posting too many details about things.

Venice, Italy
Venice, Italy
Kotor, Montenegro
Athens, Greece
Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul, Turkey
Mykonos, Greece
Kusadasi/Ephesus, Turkey
Santorini, Greece
Split, Croatia
Venice, Italy

Double stops indicate at least two nights in port.

Does seeing the cruise itinerary change anyone's opinion of where to stay for a few days in advance?

We used to live there - Paris by a mile. BUT! It's a good idea to be very organized about what you do in your short time there.

We love Le Marais and Montparnasse. They get my vote after you've seen the usual sites.

Speaking of food, sort of... my uncle loves Italy because he found this restaurant that makes him use the same napkin all week. Laundry is once a week. He got his own napkin ring. LOL.

Hmm. Now that I think about it... you know, it's funny, the brothers at the monastery here used to do the same thing. They all had their own napkin rings and little cubbies to put their napkins in, between meals. Laundry once a week.

Hope it's not too late to chime in....

This is a really hard one. Will you have time to explore Venice? If not, then I'd say Rome and Venice.

I guess I'm a little biased since I haven't been to Rome since I was a kid and I'd love to go again. I've been going to Paris at least once a year for almost 20 years (my husband's mother lives there) both before kids and now with kids. I LOVE Paris. I've gone for long holidays and short quick weekends - and you can certainly just 'hang' in Paris.

Either city is FAB, so perhaps you should decide based on what food you prefer? Just a thought!

Keep us posted.

Wow - thank you all so much! We'll have to get ourselves figured out flight-wise soon and I can tell it's going to be a tough choice :)

That said, I *really* appreciate hearing everyone's opinions, because it helps a lot when trying to figure out where to stay for just a few days in advance of the cruise. It seems like no matter which way you slice it, the flight options end up being around the same price. Just have to get there, take a break from traveling for a couple of days, and then take a short commuter-type flight or maybe a train to Venice.

Thanks again - I just knew YLF'ers would be 'in the know' about these things.

Paris...

Go over to the island at night with honey and sit on a park bench, walk along the Seine, any park, a cafe day or night, really anyplace. Love the city, I would go for an hour if I could for just a taste. Depending on where you stay very easy to get around on the metro.

Having said this in my kitchen I have two large photographs of the eiffel tower and a large metal eiffel tower on the wall..

Like I said, I have not been to Rome but we spent just a day and a half in Florence and felt like we got a good feel for the city. We arrived in the afternoon, went up on the clocktower near the Duomo in the dusk and took a look at the city, then walked up to Piazzale Michelangelo in the dark (where DH bought a can of beer from a group of Chinese students who were having an impromptu picnick), stopped by a "happening" bar area near Ponte Vecchio, sat down at an outside table somewhere, came back to the hotel (in the center of the city) to see open-air cafes and restaurants in the piazza downstairs hopping with activity until 2 AM. Woke up in the morning to the sight of an open-air farmers market in the same piazza, bought some food there. Visited Duomo, Baptisteria, Uffizzi (gorgeous sights of the city in the daylight from the dome of the Duomo), and hopped the train back to Milan. So I figured a couple of days in Florence could be very do-able.

It's great to see everyone's positive take on Rome, too. I've heard from some people that they found visiting Rome to be exhausting so I am glad to hear it is actually quite visitor-friendly.

Hm, I just saw the suggestions for Florence.

Now, while I LOVED Florence, I don't think I'd suggest it for a day. My reasoning is just that the things we loved the most about it were very interior/experiential. Going through little shops and restaurants, shopping in the local markets to make dinners, trying to get the best photographs on the river at sunset... I feel like you need a couple days to really get the impact.

Rome was way more visual... you get a lot out of it just strolling and viewing landmark after landmark.

I was just in Rome, and I agree with Ana that it is very easy to see the main sights in a day. The metro will drop you off smack in front of the Colosseo, and there are beautiful ruins and buildings all around. Even without paying the fees to go inside all the attractions, you can take a nice walk through the city and soak in the sights.

I have not been to Paris, but I have also heard that it needs more time than Rome.

I'm European (Barcelona) but have to admit I haven't been to either of them. Ok, I did go to Paris some years ago but I was 9 and don't remember a thing except it was 'boring' and I got 'tired'. I do remember Mona Lisa though lol

I don't think you can go wrong with either of them, but i don't think they will be easy either. Never been to Rome, but I wouldn't say it's a small, easy to see city. Neither is Paris, of course.

Depends on your interests too, Rome is much more... older. Paris is more modern yet nostalgic. London is cool yet a bit grey, and it will probably rain, which migh be stressful (just saying lol).

I don't know, thought about coming over to Barcelona? We are small, cute and modern (and very nice!)

Ooh, I like the idea of Florence. I did 3 days in Florence + 1 in Pisa a few years ago and it was fantastic! It's a very wandering-friendly city, IMO, with lots of smaller but still wonderful things to see.

I only spent a day in Rome, most of it from landmark to landmark, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but it is pretty big and I never got a sense of it as an actual city where people lived. I liked Paris but it is logistically challenging to get to/from sometimes, at least in my experience. It depends a lot on where you stay and how you're traveling.

I like the suggestion of Florence - it seemed more manageable than Rome and a lot of the same kind of things can be seen, plus it's closer than Paris to Venice so you won't have to do as much traveling.

I'd go to Paris to chill. You can eat chocolate croissants with cafe au lait and meander thru parks and a museum perhaps.

You can't meander in London or Rome. Esp. in Rome, IMO, because you always have the Colosseum to get around - and this is always a herculean effort.

I'm not even reading the other responses first. I'd have to say Paris. I've been to both (although Rome was some years ago and DEFINITELY worth visiting!), and I'd give priority to Paris.

I would totally choose Rome. Having been to both places, I can tell you that you need atleast a week to see Paris properly. With just 2-3 days and so many sights,it becomes so hectic! Rome has fewer sights so you will be able to take it all in, while still relaxing.

You really can't go wrong with either city. Paris is probably my favorite destination city in the entire world (I've been there four times). You can cover the highlights of Rome in 2-3 days and the gelato is out of this world. Paris is better for a week long trip.

Would you be able to go back to whichever city you choose in the future or would this just be a one time trip? If I knew I would be able to go to Paris in the next three years, I would go to Rome on this trip. If I knew I'd have to wait 6 years before my next chance to go to Paris, I'd go now and then go again later. :)

ETA: I agree with the suggestion of Florence as well. Florence is lovely and a very relaxing city. Great for walking around, etc.

I'm voting Rome. I am micro planning my trip to Paris in November and yes, apparently you need more time. Rome is gorgeous, quaint and more laid back. You'll love it!

I agree with AnneGybe. rome. Rome at least the cuddly romantic center is small enough to soak up in a weekend...but Paris is huge and needs longer. Take Rome now, do Paris properly with hubby later.

It is less than 4 hrs by train from Rome to Venice... Just saying... You won't even have to fly.

Actually, if it were me, I would go for Florence if that is a possibility. About 2 hrs by train, gorgeous city, not too busy... Of course, I have not been to either Paris or Rome (only Venice and Florence and Milan) so take this with a grain of salt.

They are both wonderful cities, but I'm not sure that I'd call either of them exactly relaxing if you are jet-lagged and just there for a couple of days.

Given those circumstances, I'd opt for Paris just because it sounds like at least one of you might be a bit more familiar with the place and can handle logistics like where to eat the first night and what might be the best location for your hotel. And walking along the Seine in the twilight or spending an afternoon people watching in Luxembourg Gardens might be more relaxing than tearing around trying to cram in a lot of sightseeing while jet-lagged.

For me, it takes me a couple of days in an unfamiliar city to get my bearings and to adjust to the tempo and feel of the place. I've spent several weeks in both cities but still have only scratched the surface of all that I'd like to see and do. So why not save Rome for another trip when you can do it justice. And, you'll definitely be planning a return trip to Paris after you get a taste of it on this trip.

But, on the other hand, Rome is so beautiful...

Jealous!

I have been to Paris but not Rome, so I don't actually know which I would choose. On the one hand, I loved Paris and want to go there again! On the other hand, i would dearly love to see Rome for the first time. So I guess I am no help. =P

Oooh...some more votes for Rome!

Like I said, I only have a few days - and it's just to hang out for two or three days before taking off to Venice. I had the idea in my head that Paris would warrant at least a week or two. Plus, my husband hasn't been to Rome. It might be more fun to be in a place that neither of us has been before?

But what will I wear???? I'm kidding, but sort of not.

Seriously, I am freaking out a little tiny bit about this - because earlier in the year, it seemed like we were going to skip this trip. We talked about it a little bit in January/February and then decided to put the whole idea on hold for awhile.

Then, all of a sudden, it turns out that we're going ...

So everything's all happening at once here. From a feeling of "zero" to 60mph or something along those lines.
