I am so sorry to hear that Marianna, but you have to keep your spirits up. Sometimes does things just happen and there is no good explanation. It probbaly is indeed for the best. I have done a tons of interviews this summer ( about 10 or so) and got more rejections that offers, but then I got a great offer from my first choice so that is all that matters in the end. I am sure that something similar will happen to you too.

Thanks for all the great input. I feel better now. It was a blow to my ego at first but I probably needed the reality check. Last year when I interviewed for internships I was offered every single one (so I thought the same thing would happen this time). I guess it was time I realized that the job search isn't that simple... especially right now. I have another interview on Monday so I'm looking forward to that.

Ele is absolutely right about the internship rut. I'm unfortunately one of those people who is a professional intern, and I think that ended up hurting me. Internships are (or can be) great, but I think I just got a lot of meaningless internships rather than one fantastic one. Unfortunately there was really no way to tell at the time how they would turn out. I think now when people see my resume, they see "desperate" and "will work for free" written all over it. Also, a lot of people are definitely offering actual jobs as internships just so they can save money. It's really rotten and makes me furious when I see a listing for what is obviously above the capability of most students, and clearly something deserving of pay, listed as an internship. It makes me even more angry when I see a listing for "office interns." Are you kidding me? Don't they realize that students PAY to take internships (through credit)? The least they can do, if not pay, is give a worthwhile experience. Why would someone do basic office work for free? Boggles my mind. Thus ends my internship rant.

Anyway, I hope after reading everyone's replies, you feel better and ready to get back on your feet and try again.

Also, it really helps to get practice keeping going despite rejection. In my area it's common to apply for 30+ jobs and only get one offer, or to submit a paper or a grant and have it be rejected 5-10 times before being accepted. It can help to go in knowing that's how the system works, it's not personal.

Marianna, I'm so sorry about your bad experience. As much as you can, try not to take it personally. I've been on the other side (reading and interviewing applicants), and often there are lots of good candidates and it's hard to choose. Rejection is hard, but it doesn't mean that you are bad or less valuable - it just means another person was a better fit for this particular job. Things are so crazy right now because of the economy.

Rotten luck, sweet pea. But you did the right thing asking for feedback. That was mature, professional and big of you. It’s a good idea to send them a nice response back thanking them for their feedback. We never burn bridges!

If you start asking us older lasses, you’ll find that we were probably all rejected in the work environment at some point, whether it was at an interview, performance review or failing to meet sales targets. So you’re not alone and there is solace in sharing.

As for the experience thing – I was there too. With a degree in Psychology and diploma in Fashion Design, I started off my fashion career working for a clothing factory because I had no experience! We all have to start off somewhere and that’s where I started gaining my retail experience.

But chin up, Marianna. This job was NOT meant to be. There is something better out there for you FOR SURE. At the end of the day, you actually got the interview and gained experience by going through the process.

Hope Gertrude gives you extra snuggles today :0)

Thanks, Ele. Great advice and insight. I believe you when you say that companies look at interns as unpaid employees, free labor. I can feel it in the job descriptions. Last year when I was looking for internships the vibe was very different.

Oh Marianna, I'm sorry about this. Like Maya, I know this feeling very well. Job hunting can be exhausting, humiliating, self esteem-crushing, you name it. Before I moved to England I was like you- very confident, as I'd never NOT got a job I'd interviewed for. Now I'm well-versed in the old "the other candidates were more experienced" line, lol! I think it can actually be a good thing, as you learn not to take things personally (though it's tough, of course) and discover you're much stronger than you ever thought.

Keep in mind that in this climate (and yes, I hate people always saying that) even getting an internship can be tough. While five years ago a company might have been happy to take on an intelligent, eager-to-learn young person with whom the team got on well, things are different now. These days companies often look at interns as unpaid employees- ie, they want someone with a very specific skillset who can actually save them money. It's not a good thing at all, especially for people who want to learn the ropes of a specific business, but there you go.

It might be a blessing in disguise- these days, it's easy to fall into the "intern rut". I'm 25 years old and I know many people who are essentially "professional interns", ie. have been interning at various companies for years, thinking that it will land them a plush job "one day". Of course the fashion industry is notorious for this kind of treatment, far worse than most other businesses, but still- you don't want to be where they are, trust me.

So chin up! There is something better just around the corner for you, I know it!

Unfortunatly, and from personal experience, this is one of life's lessons that college fails to prepare you for. I feel for everyone who is in this situation at present but perseverence is key. Although you were not offered the position your feedback was very positive, please do not be too hard on yourself.

Maya, you're spot on. It's absolutely humiliating. You put your best self on the line and then you get rejected. It's an awful feeling. If your BEST self isn't good enough, then what is?

I agree that the "not enough experience" excuse is beyond annoying, especially because this was for an internship (unpaid!). And I JUST graduated a couple weeks ago. Can you really expect me to have a ton of experience? The majority of fresh college grads are in my (our) shoes. And you're right -- how will we ever get more experience if they don't give us a chance? It's incredibly frustrating.

It's also really hurtful because I thought I presented myself so well. I spoke so confidently and I really thought I answered her questions well. Guess that didn't matter.

Oh marianna, I'm sorry to hear about your recent disappointment. I'm much in the same boat as you and I know just how awful it feels. People keep telling me it's not my fault, the economy is bad, don't take it personally, etc...but it's impossible not to have that feeling of "I'm just not good enough" even if it's not your fault. In fact it feels worse because it means there isn't much you can do about it. The "not enough experience" excuse drives me mad because OF COURSE I don't have enough experience when no one is willing to give me any!

That said, the fact that you even got an interview is fanastic. I haven't had much luck even making it through the first cut. Also, it sounds like the hiring manager was genuinely impressed with you, so she will likely keep you on file for future openings. Last, it's amazing that she even responded to your feedback request. The thing I hate most about the job search is the horrible lack of communication on the part of the employer, but unfortunately it's an employers market so I just suck it up and deal. Anyway, if she didn't think highly of you, she wouldn't have taken the time to give you such a considerate response.

Job hunting is unfortunately a pretty humiliating and endlessly disappointing experience, especially at entry level, and even more so durinbg this recession, but in the end you just have to get back on your feet and persevere.

Just got a response:

"It really came down to the fact that other candidates had more experience with the specific skillset that we were looking for. I sincerely did enjoy meeting with you, and wish that I could find a way to work with you."

So... I guess that makes me feel a bit better. My resume is a bit sparse... but I am straight out of college and it was an internship... oh well. I wouldn't be surprised if unemployed experienced professionals are looking for internships right now too. I still feel totally stupid and embarrassed though.

Just got an email from one of the organizations I interviewed at. They are unable to offer me a position. She didn't give a reason why.

I feel like a total schmuck because I thought I did well. I didn't want to work there but I've never been rejected after an interview so this feeling is so new and so uncomfortable. Makes me want to throw my whole job search out the window (which I won't do).

I want to know what I did wrong so I can improve. I emailed her back and asked if she can let me know "why" for my own personal development. No response yet.

Haven't heard back from the other interview yet. I'll be pretty crushed if I get turned down from another one.
