I was just going to recommend No More Tangles!
It's great stuff, and really works when my grand kids' hair gets tangled.

A generous spray of that, a wide-toothed comb and some patience, and I think you can get the worst knots out.

I used an entire bottle of this in high school to brush out two year old dreadlocks, it might help if you get a "mini dread" again :)

sorry to hear you had to resort to cutting it out. I had a monster clump of knots on a Caribbean vacation between the salt air, wind from boating, etc. Took lots of conditioner and lots of patience with a comb.
Under more normal conditions, though, just using a wide pik when I condition in the shower keeps bad knots at bay.

In the future, try an oil-based styling product:

Expensive:

Kerastase Elixir Ultime:

http://www.amazon.com/K%C3%89R.....B004530AB2

Not so expensive:

Organix brand Macadamia Dry Styling Oil (found at most drugstores/grocery stores):

http://www.organixhair.com/product/dry-styling-oil

Apply the styling oil *before* you get into the shower. The idea is that you'll apply the styling oil to your dry and possibly dirty hair, then step into the shower and wash it all out. This method works well to remove tangles, and it also works beautifully if you find that these fancy styling serums/oils leave your hair too greasy-looking to use as a styling product. Use it as a "pre-shampoo" product and you're golden.

Sorry to hear that you ended up cutting it out, but then again - like you said, with curly hair, it probably won't be very noticeable at all.

I would recommend keeping one of these so-called styling oils on hand, and using them in a manner that is the opposite of what the recommendations on the instructions suggest - ie. I'd douse my hair with a single pump of the styling oil *before* getting showered, believe me - it works beautifully. The Organix brand dry styling oils work very well - no need to go crazy on the Kerastase stuff, I only have it because it worked so nicely at the hair salon when I got my hair cut.

I used to think these things were just too "greasy" for me as a styling product, but once I started using them pre-shampoo, I *loved* the result. These items are a great "pre-conditioning" treatment before shampooing, and I can vouch for their de-tangling powers. File away for future reference

Thanks....I couldn't even wait five minutes after posting this. I managed to get a few strands loose and then cut it off; it was so matted and grossing me out. It sounds crazy if you have straight hair, I guess, but with my curly mop I didn't even notice it. I'll have to be more careful after shampooing. Tomorrow I'll take a better look. I don't even know if I'll be able to tell that I cut a piece out. One advantage of curly hair.

Used to have to do this with my 3 girls' hair all the time. Rub on LOTS of conditioner, and leave it for a while. Then go back to it and start with a few loose hairs near the edge of the knot: Take them (on the side closest to your head) and gently pull them up and out of the knot. If they don' t want to budge, try a different cluster of hairs till you find one that's loose enough to move. Once a few clumps have been removed, the knot will be smaller and you can rub more conditioner in. Once they're nearly all out, try a wide toothed comb.

Can you just leave it until the next time you take a shower? It might be easier to detangle when it's saturated with water. Take a comb in there with you and set to work on it.

I'm very new to long, curly hair. I just noticed a huge, nasty tangle in my hair (it's so dark and curly, it's not immediately obvious). It must have gotten clumped and dried funny after my shower.

I just tried putting some water on it and it's not going anywhere. I really don't want to cut it because it's at least two inches of hair at the front. Is there anything I can do? Thank you!
