yardshark, threads are only tracked if they have seen activity in the last two days, so it may be that some of the ones you have read that are no longer tracked have passed that point with no activity. Sometimes a thread will say "2 days", but since it is actually a little more than two days since it was touched, tracking will be turned off.

All, please let me know if you see a thread that...
- you have opened while being logged in
- has "1 day" under the "LATEST" column
- is not tracked (no grey or white rectangle around the number of replies)

Hmm...well (this thread has made its way to page 4 as we speak), I think the thing that bugs me most is that the read/unread info is just not accurate. I guess I can live with unread threads after page 1 being white = green marked threads on page 1, but after that first page, many of the threads that are unmarked (white) I am sure that I DID read at least some of in the past few days.

(Yes, I am logged in at all times while reading.)

I just looked at the new setup closer and it seems to solve my problem; having 2 levels of gray plus the white for unread but older threads is good. Basically my brain was having trouble remembering what the last thing I read on Friday was; white = unread but no longer new, light gray = I read all these, dark grey = new things to read in this thread that I've already read, green = new new. Got it

Just to clarify my question to yardshark, Aida and medusa. I need to figure out how the current system *doesn't* meet your needs.

Currently topics are tracked for 2 days.

The one exception is that if you don't read a topic before it leaves the front page, then tracking for that topic is turned off, BUT as soon as you open that topic, it will turn tracking on again.

Where does this approach break down?

I'm torn about this. Although I can see the point of being able to track things for longer, one of the characteristics of this forum is that it's forward moving and threads are normally relatively short-lived. People bump them up often as necessary. When I first used the forum and there was no tracking I was disappointed. Now I'm relieved!

I agree that the indicators are a lot better on the left.

Regarding the tracking time... Right now, any topic that you open will be tracked for at least two days, but if you don't open a topic before it drops off the front page then it won't be tracked unless someone adds a new reply and it returns to the front page.

I need to understand what you'd like to track in this situation, because if there are any additional replies it will jump to the top spot and tracking will start. On the other hand, if there are no additional replies, then there is nothing to track anyway.

I might be missing something though. Although I built this thing I don't use it nearly as much as you do.

I'd like to second requesting that the post indicators work for two days or so; before this latest update mine seemed to go back about that far. Very helpful for those of us who can't check in on weekends

The spam button has actually been around since the update last September. It only appears for veteran members, who graciously help me by weeding out any spam that they see. After they hit the spam button the system sends me a notification with all the details. This feature has saved me an enormous amount of time. Thanks veterans.

Thanks all. :)

yardshark, if you haven't read a post before it drops off the front page then the unread system doesn't track it. We need to have a cutoff somewhere because this info is tracked for every user separately.

I see your point about the activity on the site though. Right now the front page only has posts that have been touched during the last hour or so. I will look into extending the limit to two pages so you have a day or so to open a post.

Thanks for pointing that out.

They are fun! I wonder though why the new post indicators only work on the first page of the forum, especially because this is a very active site.

Is it possible to get those to work at least a few pages deep, if not all the way through?
