Sally, good to know. Sometimes it is better to take transitions in stages. Even if you don't decide to go more dramatic, the cut and color look great and I hope you enjoy the little extra "spice" in your life!

Mum-- (laughs and smiles at your complement) I think you have pegged the wrong lady in the group! Taylor is the "specialist" around here and from what I hear is amazing. I'm more of the former art student that absorbs information like a sponge and has way too much time on her hands on a friday night!

Unreal banana peel! One very nice hair cut.
I think it is just edgy enough to look modern, but not over the top.
And the red highlights seem to do a lovely contrast thing with your lovely blue eyes, a great color on you.
Enjoy playing around with it!

Elly- WOW, you have blown me away with your hairdressing knowledge (not that I know anything at all). You sound like a VERY, VERY upmarket hairdresser to me.

Thanks everyone. Its really good to know the hairstylist did a good job (even though I have been really happy myself since she did it).
@Medusa...actually I was thinking of trying to dress quite monochromatic and quite classic. I think it is just from watching Coco Chanel last night and falling in love with her clothes. I have bought a lot of white shirts recently and little black dresses so wanted to wear that to work...but my casual clothes (skinny jeans etc) would be more funky.
@Elly - thank you for taking the time to write down the points of difference between the two haircuts. I really appreciate the trouble you went to. I did go into the hairdressers saying please keep it toned down abit because I'm starting a new job in the education sector etc. But she did ask me if I wanted it more scuptured at the back and that she could make thicker chunks of colour next time if I wanted....I might do that as I (and others) will be used to the new cut and colour by then.
I am also pleased because I had this done in the small seaside town where i live and it is quite a bit cheaper than the big city.

It looks good. I don't think the red is too "out there" especially going back and reading what you said about the area you work in. I think the difference in "edginess" between the pic you posted asking for suggestions and the cut and color you have rests on a few key points.

1) the cut itself--- the pic has bangs (not that that necessarily makes it edgier, but it adds another level and more interest/less smoothness to the cut), the model has a more dramatic transition from the shorter layers in the back to longer in the front-- her front layers are much longer than yours and she has a few more shorter layers in the back to help add fullness and creates a more dramatic "stacked" wedge cut-- although you can't see a full frontal shot of the model, I doubt she has the fullness around the jawline that your cut has

2) the styling--- the woman in the picture either has very, very thick hair and/or the back is teased/blown out into a pseudo-bouffant to provide the lift and roundness at the back , which the different layering helps achieve, also the hair from behind and just in front of the ears appears to have been blown forward to achieve the angle below her jaw-- finally the hair framing her face has been blown-dry or straightened with a flat iron to give it that "sharp" look and to direct it and keep it out of her face, where your hair looks very soft and styled "round" in the pic-- the model has more roundness and fullness at the crown and less at the jawline, creating less width there

3) the color-- instead of the thinner stripes of color you have, the model appears to have just two large sections of color, her bangs/the hair framing her face has been colored completely, and the maroon/pink area appears to be only the top layer of that section-- generally this technique is called bayalage--- but i know a lot of the younger people have started referring to the much wider sections of color like those in your inspiration photo as "chunking" -- I have seen many people put one dramatic "chunk" of color an inch or two wide in the hair right behind the section that frames their face. That way they still get the edgy factor, but their natural color is near their skin

The cut and color looks great as it is, but if you are willing to style it more and want to edge it up I think you could with a few tweaks!

I love it! I don't think it's too radical at all. I don't know what your work is, but this color would fit in at most jobs in my opinion. And it's very fun.

What were you thinking for your wardrobe inspired by your hair? I think you could wear a lot of different looks with this cut, but definitely something edgy and trendy would go well.

went and had the whole schhbang. Was a bit worried it would be a bit radical for my work. I like it but apart from the few strips of red think its quite boring and conservative. Now I might have to sort out my wardrobe to go with it. The hairdresser said if the colour was a problem, she could just dye it the natural colour on the red. The dark colour is close to my natural colour.
